Ah. I did misinterpret your argument somewhat. I thought you were saying that Dagon was more powerful than Akatosh simply because he was a Daedra and Akatosh was an Aedra instead of arguing that the battle between Dagon and Akatosh should not be taken at face value.
I'll concede that it is possible that the White Gold Tower held significance after the the fires died, though the IC in general has been perhaps the most important military objective for many armies for much of its history.
The Crystal Tower's destruction in the Summerset Isles does lend credence to the idea that the towers may have some additional role in providing barriers. Once again though, as perhaps the most powerful stronghold of magical knowledge in the Summerset Isles, it was also a major military target. The attacks on Bruma and Kvatch further show that you do not need a tower to be a target for Dagon.
I do agree that the confrontation wasn't the best match up because of the unusual circumstances and Akatosh's home field advantage. Until we see further confrontations though, blanket statements claiming all daedric princes are stronger than aedric gods just aren't as plausible as they were before Oblivion.

It sounds like the cave attendees weren't the only cannibals in Markarth. The only way I can think of that they would find out is through the Namira or Brother Verulus and I doubt the good priest would talk about it for fear of scaring off what few patrons he has left. Really though, if any city should be fumigated and purged of all life, it is Markarth.

Besides "player.additem f 10000000" ? The merchant system's gold limits really is cumbersome.
Try the Sleeping Tree Camp. It is a little dangerous but at least the quest involved means you don't have to worry about merchant limits. It won't make you rich overnight but it helps.

I purged Markarth. Arguably though, it was a mercy killing.

What's wrong with quoting Martin? The only mortals with access to more knowledge of the barriers at the time were Mankar Cameron and maybe a few of his cronies. Besides, one of the Mythic Dawn's goals was to bring down the barriers and by pretty much all accounts, they succeeded.
As for what kept daedra out before the human dynasties, it is possible that the Amulet was originally used by the Ayleids since the gem was looted from them. It wouldn't surprise me if it played an important part in maintaining the barriers even then. Humans apparently aren't the only ones who can be dragonborn. Hell, Mankar Cameron could have been a descendant of Ayleid dragonborns if him wearing the amulet was any indication. Like the Ayleids though, that info is pretty much lost for now.
If there still was a barrier at white gold tower after the fires died and the gates tore through Tamriel, it didn't seem to have much if any effect on them. What isn't in doubt was that after the fires died, full strength daedra poured into Tamriel until what I believe was a full strength Dagon was thoroughly beaten by Akatosh. It is tough to tell since it isn't everyday that you fight a daedric prince.
As I said, the difference between the power of an aedra vs a daedra likely differs with each individual. Dagon was definitely more powerful than Jyggalag while Jyggalag couldn't defeat Alduin much less Akatosh. As for who are more fun, the daedra are obviously more interesting.

"Lighting the Dragonfires will no longer save us... the barriers that protected us from Oblivion are gone."
-Martin Septim after seeing Mehrunes Dagon manifesting himself in Tamriel.
This statement by Martin indicates the dragonfires controlled all the barriers. Since the invasion also occurred in the Summerset Isles and most likely all of Tamriel, I wouldn't be quick to dismiss this observation. That the daedra at the tower seemed no weaker than the daedra in the Deadlands would also indicate that the barriers felt by Umbra were pretty much gone during Oblivion. Whether or not this has been explicitly retconned in "The Infernal City" or later books is not something I can say though it wouldn't be the first time TES has contradicted itself.
edit: If it was a separate barrier, then it may also indicate that the other barriers were taken down after the main dragonfire barrier were eventually taken down. This would make sense since it would explain why Dagon didn't just jump in at anytime. He needed the gates to tear up the residual or lesser barriers left before he could lumber through. In any case, it is indicated that no barriers existed when Dagon entered.
-
Interesting point. I haven't read "The Infernal City" yet but from what I remember from Oblivion, after Martin Septim sacrificed himself, the barrier was supposed to have been made permanent, preventing Dagon and his daedra from simply stepping back into Mundus through portals after defeat.
From what you have described, it sounds like Whitegold tower is, for whatever reason, the new focal point of the barrier. The barriers were up when Umbriel entered but they were down according to Martin Septim when Dagon invaded. Otherwise all he would have needed to do was light the fires and reseal the barrier, thus closing all the gates and banishing all the daedra. It is far from unreasonable to assume Dagon was at full power.
edit: Of course, if the White Gold Tower Barrier is not the same as the Martin Septim barrier, then that is a different story.

@Falconian: You forgot to list the Thalmor
Thalmor:
- takes power with shady ways.
- builds a reign based on racism.
- claims they would go on a complete enslavement/destruction of the human race if they had the power to do so.
- executes "unwanted" men, mer and beastmen who disagree with them and their faith
- rewrites history to suite their agendas
- globalization-freak, trying to get everyone under their government
- imperialist behavior, starts wars with excuses like "bringing peace and uniting"
It still baffles me how they came to power.

I imagine it depends on the daedra and aedra involved. Just because the Aedra were weakened by the creation of mundus doesn't mean they are weaker than the Daedra. Jyggalag, after his long imprisonment and banishment from the Isles, is likely to be far less powerful than Akatosh.
Personally, I do not consider the use of the Amulet or Whitegold tower a cheat since the power in the amulet was a portion of Akatosh's power and Dagon already pierced the barrier, allowing him to bring his full power into the world, making the tower's presence moot. Just as Akatosh needed a vessel to bring an avatar to the world, so too did Mehrunes Dagon need worshipers to weaken the barrier and open the gates needed to invade.
While mundus does see changes caused by daedra, mundus also still exists thanks to the aedra. Aedra are like the people who built a house and daedra are like a bunch of hobos looking to ransack it. Aedra have the power to create. Daedra have the power to mess it up.
edit: As for unkillable argument, which do you think is more powerful, the dragonborn or a scamp? In terms of which can mess with mortals, it isn't that clear cut either. Think of it this way, who is more likely to talk to you, the 300 pound boxer who busted his butt building a skyscraper or the lazy kid who has just filled up on sugar tweeting from his cell phone?
-
Alduin is definitely the weaker of the two in terms of raw power. He is roughly as powerful as the Dragonborn, maybe stronger, and, as Clavicus Vile put it, the dragonborn is almost as powerful as he is when he was at half strength.
I wouldn't make blanket statements over the power of daedra over the aedra or any other god though. That would be like saying daedra are more powerful than any mortal. Akatosh did beat Mehrunes Dagon pretty easily after all. Just because they cannot be permanently killed doesn't mean they are unbeatable.
Alduin seems like a simple super villain. Mehrunes Dagon strikes me as a murderous jerk with power. How anyone would choose to worship him when so many other daedric princes offer similar or better services is beyond me.

Some dungeons were meant to be explored at later levels so I don't find that too surprising. I had a hell of a time finishing Labyrinthian when I was only level 12. I had to ambush everything and let my flame atronach do all of the heavy lifting. I can't count how many times I ran away from the Deathlord before he finally went down. I only beat Morokei after he bugged out from getting hit by dual cast fire bolts.

Sadly, no. They just dump the title on you and give you the old guy's office. Think of it as just another meaningless title. It isn't as if they expect you to do anything besides look pretty and not die.

No. Morrowind's hero never got such deplorable treatment and neither will my Oblivion hero. I never played SI and I never will. That is not the Champion of Cyrodiil (which my PC never even became), that is NOT my Malcolm darnit! Never! I refuse to believe it! It's hinted at, but he may just be saying to be a plain old weirdo, or making it up to fun, or in an attempt to drive mortals mad, which the Daedra of Madness naturally would be. That IS NOT Oblivion PC. NEVER NEVER NEVER.
No, I refuse to let them ruin Oblivion for me. Not going to happen.
The more you deny it, the more you sound like a mad god yourself. :teehee:

I'd go into a long argument about why people who use PCs resents bad console ports and why the resentment of the people who play on consoles is nothing more than people displacing their frustrations but all people will really read is "console players suck."
Meh. I'll say something anyway. Console ports suck. People who play on consoles do not necessarily suck. People who say consoles are always better than PCs on a board for players who mod games are trolls and idiots.

Doubtful. The gems were all normal gems. If they were in the gems, they would likely have been black gems.
-
After the Oblivion crisis, I do believe the argument that daedra are more powerful than Aedra should be revisited. Akatosh's avatar was definitely more powerful than Mehrunes Dagon. A more accurate interpretation would probably be that power levels vary but the Aedra's power is largely invested in maintaining Mundus, limiting their ability to directly involve themselves in mortal affairs. In contrast deadra can put all their power into directly meddling with mortals.

Wait at least a month after the CK is released if you want to avoid the hit or miss bugs to be found in Skyrim. It will also give modders time to make viable alternatives to the widely panned UI. Beth games are some of the few that are better played later than earlier.
-
I'm guessing since most players will likely hold quite a surplus of dragon souls that they will be able to pay off their debts to the gods fairly easily. I believe my charcter has about nineteen extra souls at his disposal.

Skyrim's main flaw in terms of exploration is the many impassible mountains. With out any way to legitimately climb or fly over them, they really frustrate efforts to explore Skyrim. Oblivion was just much easier to move across. That is nothing compared to how crappy the new UI is though. Oblivion may not have been great but it was a masterpiece compared to Skyrim's gimped UI. Did they really expect us to keep an eye on our watches to keep track of how long an enchantment would last? :wallbash:
Skyrim really, desperately needs to have the CK released. All arguments are moot until then because everyone who mods their game agrees that vanilla Skyrim is crap compaired to modded Oblivion.

I just focus on leveling until loot drops enough gold. Selling loot is too much of a hassle in Skyrim because of the gold limits.

I'm disappointed with the underwater game play myself. I loved swimming around in the underwater dungeons of past games, desperately fending off slaughterfish attacks and constantly keeping an eye on how much time is left on my air gauge. Now, there's no fighting under water, no timer for how long you can stay underwater and no timer for how much longer the freaking spell effects even last. The only fun I have now involving water is looking at how pretty it is from the coast while I occasionally blast a frost storm to clear out any slaughterfish that may be in the way.

I believe the problem is simply that the more clever quests are lost in the crap ton of generic fetch and kill quests. It is easy to get flooded by "radients" for hours in this game and never get to the juicy stuff. Still, the guild quests this time around leave something to be desired.

I think Skyrim and the civil war was designed to give the impression that the empire is doomed no matter what happens.
I'm not sure where people get this impression. Rome got pretty beaten at several points in its history, most notably during the civil was just after Julius's death, and came back stronger than ever. The Empire may be down, but i'd hardly say its beaten.
The Roman empire during its decline saw decay in its economy, political structure, military, etc in conjuction with foreign invasions and usurpers to the throne. You have admit, the similarities are uncanny.

Is it possible to get super rich without alchemy?

It's a Giant's camp with a tree surrounded by purple liquid somewhere between Rorikstead and Whiterun. The quest can be found in the adjoining cave. It can be pretty dangerous to get there though because of all the mammoths and giants. I tried the sneaky approach only to have a mammoth spawn on top of me while exiting the cave. Four mammoths then aggroed me along with a pair of giants. I was only level 23.
