I realize this is an old thread at this point but all the same thank you so much for posting this! I was doing the same thing mapping auto save to F4.

Not sure if you guys are still have this problem but are any of you using a mod like Ridable Bot? I found if I didn't remove the control ring that allows me to pilot bots then I cannot board a vertibird.
