  1. If Bethesda had been just another douche baggy corporation just wanting to make money, they would do like Activision, releasing a new game in one series every year, not releasing a new game in the series every 6 year... Morrowind was a refined version of Daggerfall - removing all redundant features, and replacing them with new ones that ultimately would make it a better game for it's time. Yes, 6 years, which should give them less of an excuse to screw it up, instead they sat around during that time improving the graphics and released the same game with LESS features, therefore, douchebags. A lot of those features were redundant, however, they were only redundant for not being utilized correctly, for instance, the language system. In daggerfall it was pretty much pointless, though I saw where they were going with it. Next game they jammed all of them into speechcraft, and pretty much randomized the whole thing. That's not an improvement, that's just plain laziness. And yes, it's lazy, because if one person can throw together something 100x better (which has happened so many times), then I'm sure a team of college educated professionals "in the biz" should be able to handle it. That is exactly why they are douchebags. Give the people what they want is just another way of saying "I'm not creative enough to make something original, I'll just go ahead and do what's safe". This is exactly why mainstream gaming, movies and music blows, this is exactly why politics are useless, and exactly why religion has such a firm grasp on this world. I understand that a company needs to make money, but that's no excuse to take something good and rape it. Companies like them are perfectly capable of having their cake and eating it too. Have a team specifically to create crap that people will buy just because it's there and it's simple for the common idiot, while the rest of the people work on the masterpiece, simple concept, but in this country it's all about profit. Why have a set up like that when you can have 2 teams finishing products for pure profit? It's an addiction to power, and an addiction to money, and you can rationalize it all you want, but they are douchebags and I will not support them (like it even matters).
  2. Hey look, it's a one post troll. I'm going to use my first post to say Bethesda is a perfect example of a group that has something of extreme value then completely destroys it. I never actually took the time to try out arena, but I started out with Daggerfall. Morrowind was okay, it was neat to have 3D, but they took out a lot of awesome stuff from daggerfall. Then Oblivion came out, which was pretty at the time but it was the most boring piece of crap ever. In fact, I think they made that game specifically to induce migraines. I liked how the game broke all the skills up, when they decided it'd be a great design choice to lump them all together, it really shows that they learned more from marketing than they did from game design. Yes let's cater to the idiots that can only handle pressing one button at a time. One of the most awesome skills was climbing, which wasn't finished in the game (with the extra rope and junk that does nothing), but what they had and the ideas of how they could improve it was so gnarly. Nothing more fun than climbing up on some assholes house and jumping around the city making people worry about having to replace their shingles. One of my favorite things was the character customization portion of it. I realize it's "tough" to put together so many interchangeable parts, but this is a multi million dollar company we're talking about. I'm one girl and I've been able to come up with creative systems for my homebrew games that have tons of customization without having to sacrifice much time or performance. It's not rocket science. Morrowind virtually had some of the same customization options in terms of armor as Daggerfall (sans the nudity, thank you America and your 85% of people that think they'll be punished by an invisible man for natural bodily functions and that are too chickenshit to talk explain what sex is to their own children. We women have boobs America, get over it). When it came to more social outfits however, it was kind of like... wtf is this? I realize you're trying to be authentic, but sheesh, at least give me the option of my character looking like a geek or not. Besides, how authentic is an elf? I don't recall those guys running around in my history book. Oblivion came around and gave less options with even uglier outfits, and of course Fallout 3 had some decent looking outfits, but you didn't really get the option to do anything interesting with them. Then there is the houses. Houses were buggy in Daggerfall, pointless in Morrowind, kind of brought it back half-assed in Oblivion (and even more so in Fallout 3). You got to buy a few different "upgrades" at the shop that don't really do anything. Idiots are attracted to crap like that. At least let me move the furniture around, sheesh. It's not like I'm asking you to let me drag everyone I've killed in game back to my house and hide them under the floor boards. It's my house, I reserve the right to punch holes in the wall at my discretion. The problem I have with daggerfall is that the quests are boring as hell. I enjoyed creating my character more than dungeon crawling. This is something that they should have worked on THE MOST, but instead they improved slightly. Lots of boring useless garbage with things that look like there should be something there but couldn't quite do it right. At this point, I would opt that they should ditch the dungeon crawl aspect (since they can't do it right) and try a different form of gameplay. One of the best aspects of the gameplay is the gladiator mode they've put into it, except once again they did it terribly. Morrowind only used the colloseum a few times (when you take over a guild), and oblivion actually let you play through as a gladiator... once. I'd rather see the gameplay centered more around something like that, with the dungeon crawl/quests on the side. Fast travel in Daggerfall was interesting. It had you plotting a course for where you wanted to go, options for what you wanted to do to get there, and if you opt for certain things, you have to pay money to do it. Morrowind had a few fast travel locations and was just a mess. Oblivion brought back fast travel, but it was so fast it made walking pretty much pointless. Only on occasion did you really have to walk anywhere, and when you did it was a pain in the ass because the animators they've employed suck ass. (it's either that or the programmers totally half assed the third person viewpoint). I could go on and on, but whatever. The moral of the story is if you've got a fantastic piece of art with potential, the goal is to improve it and realize that potential, not s*** out another copy to make some cash. As far as I'm concerned, Bethesda is just another douche baggy corporation looking to make more money, not necessarily about creating something inspiring. Skyrim is going to suck, just as morrwind was a prettier daggerfall with watered down gameplay and oblivion was morrowind with watered down gameplay, and fallout 3 was oblivion with watered down gameplay, no doubt about it, Skyrim is going to be fallout 3 with watered down gameplay. Eventually all great games turn into Call of Duty, just look at Resident Evil. And back on subject, Daggerfall could only benefit from more modifications, even if they are just cosmetic.
