Cross breeding is what the monk Gregor Mendel did with peas, starting out with 34 subspecies of peas that varied in length, color, leaves, and flower types, then he'd cross breed one type of pea with white flowers with another type of pea with a different color flower etc. That way he was able to discover which traits from which set of peas was dominant. (IE crossing a pea with a white flower with one with a yellow flower always produced a pea with a white flower etc showed the "White Flower" gene was dominant.) This is where "Hybrids" come from, like "Hybrid Tomatoes", people cross bred different types of Tomatoes with the most favorable characteristics. It's how you get Dachshunds from Wolves. Selective breeding for the traits and features you want. Long back, tiny legs etc Chemical and Mutation breeding purposely mutates the DNA and causes it to either encode incorrectly or delete segments which causes a mutation. So it's basically crossing your fingers and hoping the random result is favorable. Mutation Breeding With GMOs you know exactly what traits you're going for by inserting that trait into the plant through DNA DNA is two strips like a zipper, one strip is forward encoded the other is reverse encoded and they match up through transcription and translation T on one strip is supposed to match with A on the other, G with C GATTCGGA should match up with CTAAGCCT With Radiation or Chemical mutation is can cause a 'deletion' or addition so you get two strips like GATTCGGA matching with GATTGATT which causes the mutation, same with chemicals. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cool, I didn't get cross-breeding wrong. Eating foods made from radiation and chemical mutation seems like it would be dangerous to people. They're using radiation and chemicals! Do you know if mutation breeding is the main source of GMO foods, these days? And do you also know if there is a way the consumer can tell if the GMO product was created using mutation breeding or cross-breeding? I would be fine with eating produce that was cross-breeded like Mendel did, but mutation breeding freaks me out a bit.

Are ‘OMICS’ Contributing to the Identification of Unintended Effects in Genetically Modified Crops? -ALSO- I know I shouldn't use wikipedia, we weren't allowed to use wikipedia for our papers/presentations GTenetically modified tomato "Flavr Savr" People seem to think that they're gene splicing crabs, and lobsters etc into Corn or something like that, when they're usually splicing the hardiness of one type of plant/crop, into another more fragile crop, or altering that crop to grow in harsher environments etc. You can't just go splicing genes willy-nilly, there are certain restriction enzymes that can cut DNA at certain spots. SAC I will cut DNA at any spot that has the sequence GAGCTC Hinfl will cut DNA that starts with the sequence GA and ends with TC Hind III will cut at AAGCTT etc etc.. We cut the DNA from a Jellyfish, like a LEGO piece, the DNA part that made the jellyfish glow, then we spliced it into some fish DNA and grew the sequence in some bacteria, then injected it into a fish egg. Glowing Fish!!! The Flavr Savr tomato, was genetically modified (akin to cross-breeding) to have a longer shelf-life, using ACC synthase, (synthase doesn't mean Synthetic, it means an enzyme that catalazes the linking of two molecules and is completely organic in nature) in this instance, it was used as rate limiting device to slow down the production of ethylene which causes the ripening of fruits which in turn, increased the shelf life of the tomato. (Like how you can put some unripe fruit in a bag with Apples, and the gas the apple gives off, causes the other fruit to ripen, they ship some fruits that way with apples so they'll ripen by the time they get to the store. try it at home by buying some green bananas and putting them in a bag with apples, they give off the same Ethylene gas, the same as the enzyme that's altered in the GMO tomato Ethylene, the Ripening Hormone ) but people freaked out anyway, even though the tomato was labelled as such, and the company sold their tomato to Monsanto, and it was taken off the shelves, because people watch too many horror and sci-fi movies. The other methods of "Genetically" Modifying crops is through cross-breeding, or "Mutation Breeding" which is through purposeful mutation through exposure to radiation or chemicals (Which people don't seem to give a damn about, but are completely afraid of GMOs) . Which is odd, considering that you would think people would be more worried about exposing crops to Radiation or Chemicals in order to mutate them, and be ok with taking part of one plant's DNA and putting it into another plant's DNA First off, props for following through on all this. I really appreciate someone who makes the effort to show evidence and explain things in a rational and reasonable way. I'm going to need time to parse through all this in order to really understand it, but I won't be so quick to judge all gmo products in the future. Thank you! I like having my world views challenged with actual scientific evidence. :D One thing I'm feeling confused about is cross-breeding or "mutation breeding". I thought cross-breeding was when you pollinated one plant with a completely different plant to get another new type of plant. There was no radiation or chemicals involved in that process, or am I thinking about something different? Also, can you give me an example of a product that was made using the radiation or chemicals from mutation breeding? I'd like to get a firm grasp on what it is that people don't seem to mind despite chemicals and radiation being used. I'm learning so much here! Thank you again for your time!

Could you comment more on why GMOs aren't as dangerous as people believe? Or if you know of a good article or research paper that provides solid evidence to back-up this claim, could you share it? I'm currently on the fence about GMOs because I haven't read or heard anything beyond "the more natural something is, the better it is for you." On one hand, I have experience eating only non-gmo foods that come straight from the earth as is. I feel loads better eating these foods. (No, I haven't tried GMO foods, so I can't comment on whether they make me feel the same way, but I've been scared off of GMOs for a long time, now) On the other hand, I have enough experience to know that there is always more to things we think are dangerous and other angles to see these "dangerous" things that show they're not what we think they are. I'm open-minded enough to change my viewpoint if there is enough evidence to back-up the opposing viewpoint, so if you can provide some evidence for your claim, I would love to have my view challenged! Also, Bill Nye made the same claim after he visited Monsanto and that screams "corporate shill" in my book. It does not lend creedence to the claim that GMOs are not unhealthy as I do not believe Monsanto has the interests of human health in mind.

What are your favorite Legend of Zelda games and why?
cfly42 replied to cfly42's topic in Classic Games
Can you explain why you think its perfect? I'm not arguing, here, I'm geniunely curious. Unless this is a troll post. Then... well, ferk it. :) -
I was puttering around Hyrule Warriors today (surprisingly good, imo) and I started putting together all the Zelda games I've loved over the years in a kind of order as Hyrule Warriors uses characters and settings from all canon Zelda first-party games (I'm probably off on that guess). If you're up for it, share your own favorite Zelda games and why! I'm going to stick with the first-party entries but if you know of another Zelda game that Nintendo didn't make go for it. I'm really curious to learn what people think about my favorit-est-est franchise in the known universe. (Note: Please let me know if this topic has been posted before. I put in "legend of zelda" in search and looked through five pages but didn't find anything. If I'm bringing this back from the dead and not aware, I apologize and understand if it gets taken down) 1st - TLoZ: Breath of the Wild - It's not perfect, but it's really, really close. Every time I boot this up, I end up taking at least twenty pictures because the scenery is so breathtaking. I've probably played over 200 hours and I'm still 1/4 of the way through completely exploring Hyrule. The scope of this game still blows my mind AND most of it's seamless! Playing this is like backpacking without the actual backpacking. The gameplay is so free and balanced. It's a work of art and it's my favorite so far. 2nd - TLoZ: Skyward Sword - I've heard a lot of different opinions but I really, really liked the sword mechanic in this game. It looked weird but once I got past that, it was really fun and made me feel like I was actually using a sword (to a certain extent). The story was really good, the dungeons were probably the best I've ever played and the colors were bright and beautiful. This one also has two of my favorite Zelda tunes of all time. 3rd - TLoZ: Wind Waker - This had the weakest story of all of them, but sailing. Oh, the sailing. I LOVED sailing! Gameplay was tight as ever and this was, by far, the best soundtrack Koji Kondo did in all of his career. There's a good reason I beat this three times. 4th - TLoZ: Link's Awakening - An oldie but goodie. I don't play it anymore, but when I did, I absolutely fell in love with it. The music was so good. The dungeons were so fun! Exploring Kohilint Island was probably some of the most immersive hours I've ever spent playing a gameboy game. 5th - TLoZ: Ocarina of Time - Another oldie but goodie. This comes real close to Link's Awakening and I did enjoy the hell out of it, but it didn't feel as special in the end. 6th - TLoZ: Twilight Princess - I beat this game twice so I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it. It was good, but not great. The music was subpar, which disappointed me greatly. The story was decent. The graphics at the time were amazing and I really loved the dungeons, but overall, I didn't really dig this one. 7th - TLoZ: A Link to the Past - I know this one was biggie for a lot of folks, but I don't feel very close to this one at all. I can't deny it was amazing when it came out, but now... nah. To me it's just "that SNES Zelda game." 8th - TLoZ 2: Link's Adventure - I played the crap out of this game when I owned an NES and I loved it, but it still doesn't outshine A Link to the Past. That had more going for it. 9th - TLoZ - The original that started it all. It's certainly not bad and I liked it when I played it but, for me, it just didn't age well. That, however, is not going to stop me from overhauling the overworld and dungeons. 10th - TLoZ: Majora's Mask - This is the only Zelda game I have never beaten. I just lost interest. The time mechanic is cool but it really felt out of place for me and I didn't care a lick about it. It has some cool songs I still listen to, but all in all, this game might as well be my ex-girlfriend: I have no desire to see it and would probably throw it away if it came around.

Which game (or games) do you have the fondest memories with?
cfly42 replied to MikeRyan's topic in Classic Games
The SNES era of my early teens was the pinnacle of gaming for me, but I do have one game that made the best impression in the last 3 years. Chrono Trigger: is and will always be the grandfather of RPGs for me as it was my very first RPG experience. My parents went on vacation and left me alone and I put a TV on my bed and played Chrono Trigger for a couple days straight. It was bliss. Super Mario RPG: another game I played for a few days straight when my parents went on vacation. Except I had to rent the SNES with it. I still loved every second of it. What an amazing game! It still is! Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3: The reason RARE was so amazing back in their day. It was the first time I ever saw fully rendered sprites and I was completely hooked. It certainly helped that Dave Wise and co. created some of the most memorable music ever. The Last of Us: This game caught me by surprise. It was the first game in probably 10+ years that I actually played for 16 hours straight. I have never been so immersed in a game as an adult as I was with The Last of Us. Naughty Dog does brilliant work. -
Thank you for having me! You quoted one of my posts today and, while I don't have anything to say in return, I'd like to thank you, here, for agreeing with my view! It's always nice to meet someone with similar viewpoints. Edit: Yeah, I quoted the wrong post.... so for now, until I learn how to delete posts, the one below is the right one! :)

Hi there! I've already posted a few questions on Skyrim's mod page, but I thought formally introducing myself would be a good idea. I'm cfly. I'm a very seasoned gamer but I would not consider myself a hardcore gamer. I usually play games that are older and cheaper and can run on moderately powerful computers or whatever fits my fancy. I don't particularly care to follow the pack in terms of popularity (I'm looking at you fortnite and pubg). My main hobby, apart from gaming itself, is creation, especially level design. If I'm not working or playing a game, I'm knee-deep in a level design project. Currently I'm overhauling the level design for two older games, Zombies Ate my Neighbors and Super Mario Bros. 2. At some point I will be starting on a large RPG Maker MV project. I'm at Nexus because I decided to get into Skyrim again and fully complete it. Since then I've modded the crap out of it and learned how to replace the original music with music to my liking. But now that I've learned how to actually mod Skyrim using Creation Kit, I have a mod idea brewing in my head. Something simple, silly and fun for my first foray into modding. The thought of creating another dungeon with CK is ridiculously exciting for me and is something I will get into after I beat Skyrim fully. I hope to be more active on the forums especially the Skyrim forums once I get more experienced with CK. Thanks for reading and have a fantastic day! cfly

So, I'm having trouble replacing the music from the main menu and I'm not sure why. I did the exact same thing I saw in a video about replacing music and nothing changed. This is what I did, so far. I can't imagine that I'm far off from the answer. (When reading these, keep in mind that I've successfully replaced the music for combat and ice dungeons, but the main theme still won't change.) - made a folder named "music" and put it in "Data" of main Skyrim folder. Put three more folders in "music" and named them "combat", "dungeon", "special" (no apostrophes for any of these). Found the song I wanted for main theme and converted it into .wxm. Renamed this song "mus_maintheme.xwm" and put it in the "special" folder. -- Result: Did not change main theme music. - converted song I wanted into a .wav file, renamed it mus_maintheme.wav and put it in the "special" folder. -- Result: Did not change main theme. - renamed the newly .wav song mus_maintheme.xwm and put it in the "special" folder. Still, the main theme remains the same. What I find interesting about this is you can't find the original file "mus_maintheme.xwm" when using TES5edit or Creation Kit, but mus_maintheme.xwm appears after unpacking Skyrim's music and sound. How is Skyrim even using this song if its not programmed in? This further confuses me because I watched a video (about 6 years old) showing the guy do the same thing I did every step of the way but successfully changing the main theme. Does anybody know what's going on here? Am I missing something or did I do something wrong? None of this makes any sense...

I can't comment on why so many Americans are obese, although I personally believe the biggest culprit is processed sugar and foods. What I can say from experience is this: I've been on a diet consisting mainly of vegetables, fruits, grains and seeds, and meat and eliminating all processed foods, sugars, and dairy. I've been on this diet for two months now and have lost 20 lbs, at least. This is without exercise. Now that I've started jogging every morning, I think I've lost even more weight and I feel better than ever. My point is this: If eating whole foods that aren't processed is having the positive effect its having on me, than I surmise that the opposite kind of foods (the ones that are heavily processed with a lot of different chemicals and things) are a huge reason people are obese today. I know this is a complicated issue, so what I'm saying doesn't answer anything completely, but it still plays a major role.

Chrono Cross, in my opinion, is the best video game soundtrack of all time. Then Kingdom Hearts 2, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country 2, 1, 3, Super Mario RPG, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and surprisingly, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (Stewart Copeland's best!) Honestly, any soundtrack Yasunori Mitsuda or Yoko Shimomura worked on ends up being amazing. They are musical geniuses in my book.

Can you add music tracks beyond the original number of tracks put in?
cfly42 replied to cfly42's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim LE
It's all good. I just took a peak through TES5edit music categories and it seems a little more complicated than CK, but it might also have functionality CK doesn't. Don't know. I think for now I'll be using CK. To each their own! Thank you for your input! -

This statement is completely untrue. I personally have used TES5edit to add PSYrim music to just play in Breezehome. So you can use TES5edit?? Well, *&$! me. I've been perusing CK and I figured out how to add new tracks on top of the replaced tracks. PSYCHED! If I spend the brainpower, I may even figure out how to have a single track for each store, but that may be unfeasible in the end.... Would you say TES5edit is easier to use than CK in replacing and/or adding music? -

It sounds like I'm going to have to replace the originals and make an esp for the additional tracks, too. (unless CK allows me to replace the originals as well... I'll find out soon enough). Should be fun! I wish we knew if each music type had a track limit, but for now, I shall make do with what I know. Thank you for your input!
