  1. My view on it isn't new or unique, but here's my thoughts: - It's hard to determine what conditions life can live in when you're only aware of one life form (water based), which is why we search for water more than anything else. The "habitable zone" is nonsense because of this. Some day, in the extremely distant future, we may find life forms that require radiation from a nearby star to survive much like we do with water, requiring them to be as close to the star as perhaps Venus or closer. We simply don't know. - How do you define "life"? Just like the word "planet" before Pluto's demise, there are too many definitions for the word. Some say "life is being able to reproduce." Carl Sagan suggested that life should be defined as the ability to learn (paraphrased). Others say that "plants don't learn, but they are alive" so they may take a stance having to do with evolving or something. I've even seen one argument that planets themselves can be alive as they have active ("alive") and inactive ("dead") cycles, for example, someone might say Mars is dead because it no longer has a magnetic field, or an extremely small one. For me, the definition of life is a bit of "all of the above" with exception to the planets being alive - that's just absurd. Given those two points it's already extremely difficult to determine whether or not we can be alone because we simply don't have solid definitions. Taking some information as given, lets say that all life -is- aquatic and the definition of life is "technologically advanced enough to send radio waves" -- just for the sake of argument. In this case my belief is that we're not alone, however, I do not think we've been visited. It's not impossible to be visited by other life forms, but it's extremely improbable given the information we currently know unless you hitch a ride on a neutrino apparently (joke). I think that life can be found all over the universe, but we have a long way to go before we can prove any of it.
  2. It also depends on what you're talking about, specifically. Skyrim? There is NO such thing as a non-steam version, and I'm not really sure how someone could be confused into thinking a "retail" copy isn't Steam. FNV? Couldn't tell you - never played it.
  3. I'm not sure why they would consider it to be non-Steam. Steam is still required to play it even if you bought it at places like GameStop, like I did.
  4. One doesn't need to "try it" to see exactly what it is and does - in fact, "trying it" has no bearing, as I think you realized in the second quote. You're entitled your opinion, though the statement I made says nothing about features. On MySpace, too much customization or not, the layout doesn't change - at least, they all look the same to me. Timeline's layout is very similar. Two extremely disorganized columns of data on a page that will extend (at load time) to infinity and beyond. This will cause profiles to take longer to load, as proven by trying to load a friend's timeline just now and it taking nearly 30 seconds - for comparison, it is taking less than 3 seconds to fully load a non-timeline profile. The look is very much like MySpace, and some could argue that the organization on MySpace is slightly better. Yeah, that is annoying. I don't remember if it was something I did but I don't get them anymore. Maybe it wasn't something I did, maybe my friends don't play the games lol
  5. I finally got a reply from File Planet (5th time was the charm). It seems their DMCA Agent email address has an over-active filter (is this a "go figure" or a "yeah, right" ?). To ensure the appropriate people get your notice be sure to include "Re: Copyright Claim" in your subject when you email [email protected] -- I had emailed it before, but as with the support tickets requesting removal and emailing Peer Schneider, didn't get a response. This time I got a response within 1 business day.
  6. So, what are the thoughts/feelings for this community? My profile hasn't been switched to it yet, but I already dislike it.
  7. Many of us have already started doing this with descriptions/read me files. Most scripting and programming languages can easily work around this using regex. For example (if I were a scum bag) I would simply toss in a regex that does: Replace(filename,"---Brought\w+$","") to remove it, or if I wanted to be a big PITA I could Replace("The Skyrim Nexus","My Lousy Website"). Neither of these were taken from a specific scripting style, though they are pretty close for VB/C# or Lua (using lrexlib) and quite a few others. The sites that aren't using "bots" would manually remove the text when they manually add it to their sites. I think it's a good idea, just not sure on the whole 'put it in the filename' part. Imagining a world where everything has "Brought to you by Skyrim Nexus" in the name sounds a bit silly to me - no offense.
  8. With Skyrim out over a month now it's apparent that there are quite a few sites that are going to take mods directly from The Nexus, without permission. Most of these sites are taking the images directly from our mod pages on The Nexus sites - the largest of the group (File Planet / IGN) certainly is. I'm certain the admin are keeping up with the discussions in various places. In one of those discussions a recent post mentioned how an image sharing site watermarks images by their users. I think this would be an excellent feature for the mod screen shots and images uploaded by authors and users. I'm not suggesting that they ALL get a Nexus watermark, but an author does set the permissions for uploading images and in those permissions there could be an option to watermark. I know myself that I'd rather not have to find an app (for windows), or take an extra 5 steps (put my linux hard drive in my laptop, transfer image over, hit it with imagemagick - after re-learning how to use it, transfer back) or learn how to use (and purchase) the big name graphics suits - not all of us are keen on graphics. This can easily be done automatically via imagemagick (or various other tools) after the image file is uploaded. I think this would be an excellent idea because if the other sites continue as they are then the user will see that the files are coming from here, for those that choose to use it. It may cause the other sites to re-think their strategy and get their own screen shots, which I think some sites might find to be too costly (man hours, etc). Thank you
  9. There is no such thing as a "fake" C&D letter (you do not require a lawyer to send one for you, and knowingly sending one for something that isn't yours is unlawful and would probably fall under some sort of fraud). However, they (File Planet, specifically) ignore the C&D letters from what everyone has said in my thread posted above.

  11. This doesn't fly in Illinois. They can't detain you there and wait for a dog longer than the amount of time it would take to run your tags and write a ticket, unless you were pulled over for a drug related crime that the officer would be witness to. Something similar happened in 2004 (guesstimate on year) and the Illinois Supreme Court said waiting for the dog to arrive was unconstitutional for a speeding ticket - the vote was 4-2.
  12. I tried to do this myself, but since I have little (read: nearly 0) experience with graphics applications and I couldn't get it to 'work' properly. My request is fairly simple; I am colorblind (thus the reason for not messing with graphics much) and can not see the ice wraiths, to remedy this my request is for someone (anyone!) to make the skeletal body differ from the aura. I don't care what color you make it, or how much of it you change - the skull alone is perfectly fine with me, as long as I can see it! If this isn't possible (again, lack of understanding - maybe the aura will change colors too?) maybe replace it with a replica of Earthworm Jim or something (again, I don't really care as long as I can see what I'm needing to kill). Kudos and Endorsements and lots of hexorcist <3s for anyone who would be willing to help me out :\
  13. So, this morning (5am-ish) I was out exploring and I came across a location where I found a female (imperial?) and a male (khajiit or argonian) sitting outside saying they were going to beat me to some treasure. For the life of me I can't remember where that was, the names or (obviously) the races which is making it quite difficult to go back and 'race' them now (if I dont decide to just kill them to begin with). Anyone able to give me some information so that I can re-find these individuals?
  14. I was thinking about this just earlier today actually. I have not completed the main quest line, and have a lot left to do in the game (TONS, actually) but if I had to make a guess with my current understanding I'd have to say it's one of the Greybeards as it seems the other NPCs are oblivious to the Dragon Word Walls.
