  1. My view on it isn't new or unique, but here's my thoughts: - It's hard to determine what conditions life can live in when you're only aware of one life form (water based), which is why we search for water more than anything else. The "habitable zone" is nonsense because of this. Some day, in the extremely distant future, we may find life forms that require radiation from a nearby star to survive much like we do with water, requiring them to be as close to the star as perhaps Venus or closer. We simply don't know. - How do you define "life"? Just like the word "planet" before Pluto's demise, there are too many definitions for the word. Some say "life is being able to reproduce." Carl Sagan suggested that life should be defined as the ability to learn (paraphrased). Others say that "plants don't learn, but they are alive" so they may take a stance having to do with evolving or something. I've even seen one argument that planets themselves can be alive as they have active ("alive") and inactive ("dead") cycles, for example, someone might say Mars is dead because it no longer has a magnetic field, or an extremely small one. For me, the definition of life is a bit of "all of the above" with exception to the planets being alive - that's just absurd. Given those two points it's already extremely difficult to determine whether or not we can be alone because we simply don't have solid definitions. Taking some information as given, lets say that all life -is- aquatic and the definition of life is "technologically advanced enough to send radio waves" -- just for the sake of argument. In this case my belief is that we're not alone, however, I do not think we've been visited. It's not impossible to be visited by other life forms, but it's extremely improbable given the information we currently know unless you hitch a ride on a neutrino apparently (joke). I think that life can be found all over the universe, but we have a long way to go before we can prove any of it.
  2. It also depends on what you're talking about, specifically. Skyrim? There is NO such thing as a non-steam version, and I'm not really sure how someone could be confused into thinking a "retail" copy isn't Steam. FNV? Couldn't tell you - never played it.
  3. I'm not sure why they would consider it to be non-Steam. Steam is still required to play it even if you bought it at places like GameStop, like I did.
  4. One doesn't need to "try it" to see exactly what it is and does - in fact, "trying it" has no bearing, as I think you realized in the second quote. You're entitled your opinion, though the statement I made says nothing about features. On MySpace, too much customization or not, the layout doesn't change - at least, they all look the same to me. Timeline's layout is very similar. Two extremely disorganized columns of data on a page that will extend (at load time) to infinity and beyond. This will cause profiles to take longer to load, as proven by trying to load a friend's timeline just now and it taking nearly 30 seconds - for comparison, it is taking less than 3 seconds to fully load a non-timeline profile. The look is very much like MySpace, and some could argue that the organization on MySpace is slightly better. Yeah, that is annoying. I don't remember if it was something I did but I don't get them anymore. Maybe it wasn't something I did, maybe my friends don't play the games lol
  5. I finally got a reply from File Planet (5th time was the charm). It seems their DMCA Agent email address has an over-active filter (is this a "go figure" or a "yeah, right" ?). To ensure the appropriate people get your notice be sure to include "Re: Copyright Claim" in your subject when you email designated_agent@ign.com -- I had emailed it before, but as with the support tickets requesting removal and emailing Peer Schneider, didn't get a response. This time I got a response within 1 business day.
  6. So, what are the thoughts/feelings for this community? My profile hasn't been switched to it yet, but I already dislike it.
  7. Many of us have already started doing this with descriptions/read me files. Most scripting and programming languages can easily work around this using regex. For example (if I were a scum bag) I would simply toss in a regex that does: Replace(filename,"---Brought\w+$","") to remove it, or if I wanted to be a big PITA I could Replace("The Skyrim Nexus","My Lousy Website"). Neither of these were taken from a specific scripting style, though they are pretty close for VB/C# or Lua (using lrexlib) and quite a few others. The sites that aren't using "bots" would manually remove the text when they manually add it to their sites. I think it's a good idea, just not sure on the whole 'put it in the filename' part. Imagining a world where everything has "Brought to you by Skyrim Nexus" in the name sounds a bit silly to me - no offense.
  8. With Skyrim out over a month now it's apparent that there are quite a few sites that are going to take mods directly from The Nexus, without permission. Most of these sites are taking the images directly from our mod pages on The Nexus sites - the largest of the group (File Planet / IGN) certainly is. I'm certain the admin are keeping up with the discussions in various places. In one of those discussions a recent post mentioned how an image sharing site watermarks images by their users. I think this would be an excellent feature for the mod screen shots and images uploaded by authors and users. I'm not suggesting that they ALL get a Nexus watermark, but an author does set the permissions for uploading images and in those permissions there could be an option to watermark. I know myself that I'd rather not have to find an app (for windows), or take an extra 5 steps (put my linux hard drive in my laptop, transfer image over, hit it with imagemagick - after re-learning how to use it, transfer back) or learn how to use (and purchase) the big name graphics suits - not all of us are keen on graphics. This can easily be done automatically via imagemagick (or various other tools) after the image file is uploaded. I think this would be an excellent idea because if the other sites continue as they are then the user will see that the files are coming from here, for those that choose to use it. It may cause the other sites to re-think their strategy and get their own screen shots, which I think some sites might find to be too costly (man hours, etc). Thank you
  9. There is no such thing as a "fake" C&D letter (you do not require a lawyer to send one for you, and knowingly sending one for something that isn't yours is unlawful and would probably fall under some sort of fraud). However, they (File Planet, specifically) ignore the C&D letters from what everyone has said in my thread posted above.
  10. http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/484608-unauthorized-reidstribution/ - There's a link to the IGN's contact page in my post here
  11. This doesn't fly in Illinois. They can't detain you there and wait for a dog longer than the amount of time it would take to run your tags and write a ticket, unless you were pulled over for a drug related crime that the officer would be witness to. Something similar happened in 2004 (guesstimate on year) and the Illinois Supreme Court said waiting for the dog to arrive was unconstitutional for a speeding ticket - the vote was 4-2.
  12. I tried to do this myself, but since I have little (read: nearly 0) experience with graphics applications and I couldn't get it to 'work' properly. My request is fairly simple; I am colorblind (thus the reason for not messing with graphics much) and can not see the ice wraiths, to remedy this my request is for someone (anyone!) to make the skeletal body differ from the aura. I don't care what color you make it, or how much of it you change - the skull alone is perfectly fine with me, as long as I can see it! If this isn't possible (again, lack of understanding - maybe the aura will change colors too?) maybe replace it with a replica of Earthworm Jim or something (again, I don't really care as long as I can see what I'm needing to kill). Kudos and Endorsements and lots of hexorcist <3s for anyone who would be willing to help me out :\
  13. So, this morning (5am-ish) I was out exploring and I came across a location where I found a female (imperial?) and a male (khajiit or argonian) sitting outside saying they were going to beat me to some treasure. For the life of me I can't remember where that was, the names or (obviously) the races which is making it quite difficult to go back and 'race' them now (if I dont decide to just kill them to begin with). Anyone able to give me some information so that I can re-find these individuals?
  14. I was thinking about this just earlier today actually. I have not completed the main quest line, and have a lot left to do in the game (TONS, actually) but if I had to make a guess with my current understanding I'd have to say it's one of the Greybeards as it seems the other NPCs are oblivious to the Dragon Word Walls.
  15. Try disabling mods one-by-one until you find the problem mod. Before reporting it to the author, I would activate all other mods to ensure that the one found is the only one causing an issue (it could be a mixture of two or more mods).
  16. I haven't seen this posted anywhere so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has noticed this. Last night I decided I was going to finally level enchanting (> 100 hours played time, I figured the time was right). So I load up Lydia with a weapon that soul traps and give her 8 black, 15 grand, 26 greater, 67 common, 72 lesser and 80-something petty soul gems. First thing I did was take care of the black/grand - didn't want them to be wasted for any reason. After a while I took her home and removed her filled soul gems, which left her with somewhere around 50 common and nearly all of her petty soul gems. Go back out and kill a couple enemies and all of her soul gems are filled up. I certainly didn't kill anywhere near 125ish enemies, it was more around 25-30. It was certainly odd.
  17. I'd use it as-is, I think it's awesome. As for the cartoonish look, I can't comment (colorblind - it looks fine to me).
  18. Loading strings and making your own strings file are two different things though :) I'll have a tool out either in the next couple hours or in the morning - I'm doing some testing on it now. You can get it here: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3112
  19. Call me odd, but I loved the Mass Effect series. It's odd because I typically dislike ports to PC but I didn't feel as if I were playing a ported game - at least, not nearly as bad as TES series or Fable series.
  20. There probably isn't a tool for it specifically, yet.. but it wouldn't be hard to write a tool that could make the files as the format of the file is already understood. I wrote a parser for some translations I did on one of my apps, I'll take a look later today and see if I can't work some kind of editor/creator with it.
  21. Steam is a "feature" of the CK. Enough said. -- My stance. The DRM isn't an issue with me, it's the shoddy work that Steam does that is an issue with me. I'll briefly go over a few of the things that have happened since Skyrim's release because of Steam: (note: this isn't a full list) Deleting game files before downloading a patch to replace them. Anyone with experience in this type of work knows that you delete _after_, not before. Doing it the way it has been done _disables_ people from playing the game while it's being updated, instead of downloading in the background and asking the user to restart the game for it to be updated. Just idiotic, plain and simple. Related: "Automatic Updates" can not be toggled off reliably. This is very basic. Psuedocode: if (checkbox == false) { dont-update; } The issue with this is two-fold. It causes problems like we had with the 1.2 patch where it was removed shortly after being put up. It also does this (obiously) without the user's permission. I should not have to re-check the "Dont Update" setting every time Steam decides to fix a typo in their software -- about once a week. Downloading other languages _DELETES_ current language data. What if I were changing the language so I could get language files in order to translate my mod? This is what happened with me. I had to download each language, that's fine. When it was all said and done I had to re-download over 1GB of data because Steam did not make a copy of the English language files before deleting them. At the very least it could ask the user what they want to do. Related to downloads: Have you not noticed the dialup speeds of the downloads? It's quite obvious to me that their download servers were not intended for the usage that they're getting currently. What happens when users have 300 mods they want to update, and their downloads are going at 1.2KB/sec ? I'll tell you. It will take them forever and frustrate them just as it frustrated me when downloading the language files in my previous point. Being locked out of a game simply because of Steam's login server being "busy" is.. extremely silly. Especially when it's "busy" for two hours. A more detailed list of reasons to avoid Steam can be found by using google. Hell I wouldn't care if this tool uses some kind of DRM to make sure that the people using it own the game -- which is laughable, but I'd support it if it came up for discussion on this tool. I just don't want Steam's illogical, bloated, buggy code in what I use for a CK, nor do I want it to "automatically upload" my mods to Steam's database -- it has been stated that it would, whether or not the user is given the option to disable this is yet to be seen. I don't care that anything made with the official CK is owned by Bethesda - that's fine, but if Steam is "part owner" of it then I want nothing to do with it. Actually, given the number of users here who have stated that they do not want to host their mod via Steam, it could very well be an eye-opener if we were to get such a tool out. Just because they haven't made a blog post saying "We see you over there!" after a few hours of the idea being up for discussion doesn't mean that it can't or wont. Instead of being a nay-sayer, why not show a little support for the open development of anything that has to do with the game.
  22. Irrelevant and ridiculous. "Irrelevant" would be obvious had you read the posts in the first and second pages of the thread. "Ridiculous" because it would only take man-years if the file formats were 100% new and we were figuring them out instead of relying on what people have posted at UESP, which is not the case on either (example: they still use .dds for textures). For input, the only new file format is the .(I|L|)STRINGS files and they're already figured out. Yes, it will take a while to get something on the table that people can use, but in terms of time a single man-year (which is 1800-2300 labor hours) is silly. A time frame of 2-4 months for a beta is more likely. Again, if you'd read the posts in the thread you'd see that we haven't been discussing "missing features", but a few of us have mentioned that we want to REMOVE one "feature".
  23. If deciding to go that way, why not use a scripting language that already exists? From your example Lua might be a viable option.
  24. Ah, then I misunderstood. I do apologize. Also, one other thing to note and should've done it in my previous reply to you. For me, the threat is clear. Steam will be integrated. I'm alright with Steam being integrated for the game, but the CK is a bit too far in my opinion. We (the gamers) have already seen the impact Steam has had on the game itself (just since Skyrim's release I've had no less than 8 instances where Steam - not Bethesda - has annoyed me). That's more than enough of a threat for me to like the idea of not dealing with them, and I think that's the stance the OP is trying to get at also. It's not a matter of time, it's a matter of Steam.
