  1. Hello everyone, I have an i5 2500K system with a 1 GB XFX 5850 video card and 8 GBs of ram. I've got Skyrim's graphics set to Ultra and the view distance sliders maxed. I'm just wondering whether getting a 2 GB card would result in the pop-in textures happening a lot further out? I can get a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7850 OC 975MHZ 2GB 4.8GHZ GDDR5 for $190 right now. It's faster by about 25 percent but, perhaps more importantly, it has double the ram. Does anyone know whether such an upgrade would significantly improve the loading of more distant textures?
  2. Triaxx2, Vilja. The single most popular companion, by far, for Oblvion. This sounds like a good suggestion.
  3. I voted for Vilja. Janus I am interested in your rather sinister looking character too. Vilja from Oblivion is so highly regarded though I am more keen to try adventuring with her in Skyrim. (I haven't, yet, done so in Oblivion). Really... interaction with any NPC(s) would just be icing on a cake that already has so much. Yum Yum Yum! Regarding a tie in with the MQ, well, I haven't done enough of it yet to know if it sucks eggs, but Janus is right, "A lot of us don't like to repeat the main quest over and over again, and try to avoid it in subsequent playthroughs." So keeping Ceri off on her own quest is a good idea.
  4. Pineapplerum, jim_uk, You're welcome - and thanks for thanking me. I spent nearly an hour typing and editing that post so it's nice to know when it's appreciated. I should add that, as an experiment, I tried to delete the Join the Stormcloaks Rebellion quest - to see if I could pick it up again by talking to a rebel. I went through the process outlined above and did manage to delete it - but that merely resulted in its followup quest appearing in my list. I suppose if I went through the process again with it, and then again with any other followups, I'd be able to get rid of it. Since it, and the Join the Imperial Legion one are the only Miscellaneous quests I currently have I'm not bothered by them. I might do one or the other - or both(?) anyway. Pineapplerum, I only recently discovered Morrowind and was playing it in the weeks before Skyrim's release. It's graphics are dated, of course, but even so it has a great feel to it. The music and the more varied locales really draw you in. I found by simply adding a grass mod it made a big difference in the look - then I started adding other mods as I played. This all happened after I'd played a bit of Morrowind Overhaul. It looks so good it challenges Oblivion's graphics. Before I got too far into it I decided I wanted to play vanilla Morrowind so that I could properly appreciate the mods. Here's a video about MO: Morrowind Overhaul S&G Installation Videotutorial Of course Morrowind's melee action sucks - which is maybe why there's another project called Morroblivion that has recreated the province of Morrowind using the Oblivion engine - with all quests (or maybe just all major quests?) in place. Here's a link for it: Morroblivion.com Now back to the thread - which I hope I haven't just hijacked. Ha ha.
  5. For anyone that wants to know how to delete a quest here's what I did to delete the Talk to Aventus Aretino one. It's a wordy explanation but, well, that's the way I explain things... FIRST: I had to get the Quest ID - since the RefID shown at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Aventus_Aretino didn't work with any command I tried. To find the Quest ID I used the command: ShowQuestTargets Some of the info it returned was kind of cryptic but two things allowed me to find the ID I needed fairly easily: 1) I had only five active quests 2) I knew that the Aventus Aretino one was a prelude to joining the Dark Brotherhood - so when I saw Current Quest: DB01Objective I figured that was it. Other Quests listed were: Current Quest: dunGauldersonQST - not too cryptic Current Quest: CW00A - cryptic Current Quest: MQ201 - cryptic Current Quest: CW00B - cryptic I figure, since the two remaining Miscellaneous Quests are to Join the Imperial Legion and Join the Stormcloak Rebellion, the two IDs starting with CW00 are for those quests. The one remaining ID must be for Diplomatic Immunity - which makes sense since it's part of the Main Quest and that ID starts with MQ! (I so smart!) Note that you can scroll the list up/down with the PageUp/PageDown keys. SECOND: Once I had the ID I was set to use the SetStage command - almost. Entering SetStage 0 didn't do anything so I had to find out what the stages were. Player.sqs DB01Objective returned the following: Stage 0: 0 Stage 10: 1 Stage 200: 0 Stage 255: 0 By the way GetStage DB01Objective, a command I first tried, returned: GetStage >> 10.00 That info didn't help but you can see that the setting of 1 listed for Stage 10, gotten with the Player.sqs command, must mean that that stage is active. THIRD: Now armed with all the proper info it would be understandable if you figured that the number I needed was 255 - being that that's the last stage - but it wasn't. For some reason 200 was the number that worked. I typed: SetStage DB01Objective 200 and immediately heard that tiny drum roll we hear when we complete a quest stage - and the text "Completed: Talk to Aventus Aretino" was displayed. Checking the journal afterward showed... nothing! I'd expected to see the next step, involving heading to Riften, but the quest was gone! :) An added bonus is that it doesn't even show in the list of completed quests. It's as though I never had it! :D To sum up I typed: ShowQuestTargets and figured out which ID was probably the one I needed Player.sqs DB01Objective showed me all the stages - and which was active SetStage DB01Objective 200 was then entered - trying first DB01Objective 255 (no result) and then it (happy ending!) I hope this helps someone.
  6. lgvlgv and manomana, Thanks. That was the right command and I worked it out. The quest is removed and, checking stats, I wasn't tagged with a murder. I have to leave for work now but I will, using the screenshot I took of the commands I used, post exactly what I did when I get home. :)
  7. The journal is a (bad) joke. The one in Morrowind was great. It looked, and was written, as though you actually wrote it and, more importantly, it had all kinds of details to jog your memory. Why'd they "fix" what wasn't broken?! I got to level 20 with my first character, who did kill the old hag, mainly just to clear the quest. Stopped playing him not long after because I'd gotten into this marathon mode running around - literally because I don't Fast Travel (but do use the carriage rides) - trying to clear the journal. With this new character I am now, usually, careful to do a save before I talk to an NPC. Somehow I missed it when this particular quest was forced on me. What a time to get careless eh? To get stuck with a murder mission. You know I was even given a quest when I picked up a book! To decline it I would have had to load a save from too far back so I decided to keep it - because it was a go-find-this-item-in-this-bandit-camp type job - and I've nothing against killing outlaws. I've been reading a console command list and have tried the CompleteQuest one, with the proper ID, but nothing seems to happen. caqs, which is CompleteAllQuests did seem to be doing that but it also gave me a CTD. Besides, even if I do get that CompleteQuest command to work I think it would give the same end result of actually doing it. :(
  8. Hello everyone, If this question has been asked - and it probably has - I could not (easily) find a thread about it. Can quests I don't want to do be deleted with some console command? I've a miscellaneous quest that involves murder and I don't want to do it with this character. And I don't want to murder the person offering the job to avoid committing the murder - cause that would be murder. (Bandits are fair game though). I doubt it matters but the quest is called Aventus Aretino. Thanks for reading this.
  9. Anyone know the command to turn snowfall into sunshine? I don't mind all the snow up north but too often I'm running around in blizzard conditions. It would be nice to have more sunny days.
  10. Yes please do report if 5:1 creates a problem. I'm not sure I'd go that slow myself. Maybe 10:1 I'm thinking.
  11. Anyone know what the lowest 'safe,' timescale would be? Safe as in not breaking quests. (I've read that you can (break some) if it's set too low.) I confirmed, in game, that the scale is 20 to 1 by default and haven't messed with it yet.
  12. I hate to say this, cause it'll sound sarcastic, but I have to wonder if you're reading the .doc or .txt files that come with mods? Most mods install pretty easily. The Data folder, and its sub-folders, is where they all go so it's usually just a matter of copying and pasting them there. Here's an example - but before following it download and install 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html). It's free and opens most (all?) archive types - .rar files included. Now, when you download a mod open it - right-clicking it and selecting Open Archive if necessary - and have a looksee inside. Usually you will see a Mesh and Texture folder and/or an .esp file. (Graphical improvements (they go in the Mesh and/or Texture folders) usually don't come with a .esp file, and .esp files often don't come with any new meshes or textures.) So when you look in the archive you'll see: Meshes Textures .esp files .doc and/or .txt files Sometimes they'll all be contained in a Data folder so you'll see: Data Files ................Meshes ................Textures ................esp files ................doc and/or .txt files So... usually... to install a mod you simply copy and paste everything to either the Data Files folder - if no Data Files folder exists in the archive - or the main Skyrim directory. (The main directory is that which contains all the folders, the launcher and tesv.exe etc.) WARNING: It's highly advisable to compare the files already in the Meshes and Textures folder with those in the archive. Often they'll be new and won't overwrite anything; sometimes they replace the default files. If there are just too many files to easily see which is the case simply highlight the affected folders, Meshes and Textures either separately or together for example, right-click and select "Send to... Compressed (zipped) folder" - if using Windows. In this way, if you don't like the mod, you can easily delete the affected folders and restore the originals from the backup you just made. Lastly: If an .esp is included in the mod you'll have to click on Data Files when you run the Skyrim Launcher and make sure it is checked. If you don't it won't be loaded when you click Play to run the game. If all this sounds very confusing, well, either I didn't write it very clearly or you just need to become familiar with working with archives (.7z, .ace, .rar. and .zip files), directories/folders, and Windows Explorer. When Wrye Bash, or a program like it, is made for Skyrim installing and un-installing mods will be a lot easier - once you know how to use the program. In my experience though - using Wrye Mash for Morrowind - one still needs to examine and compare the mod's files to any existing default files. Otherwise they could be overwritten without warning - making un-installing problematic. Hope this helped! (Probably now some other member will post an link to an already existing tutorial. lol.)
