Found a viable fix (so far) using the Reverb and Ambiance Overhaul mod http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10189/?

I've got the same issue going as you do. The sounds did OK until I heard lions and elephants and such. that broke the immersion for me. Now, however the damn bird chirping is so loud, it drowns out everything else. Too bad there aren't any mods even remotely close to this. I've tried quite a few that promised similar visual results, but fail hard by comparison. Such a shame the person behind it ripped other people off, otherwise we'd have a better or fully working version of this mod.
