I figured it out. I just had to right click the directory and add it to an archive on my desktop. Then dragged the newly created archive into the dropbox on vortex and it was happy.

I have been watching all kinds of tutorials on this and none of them show me the proper way to install SKSE64 with vortex. The guide on Nexus Mods appeared very helpful at first. But in the video the instructor was installing a script extender for fallout 4. I don't know if that game just functions differently with vortex, but anyways. In the video the guy literally clicks the notification that the script extender isn't installed, so he does via vortex and its done in seconds. With Skyrim Special Edition I get that notification but it takes me to the silverlock.org website to do it manually. So I figured that's what I'm going to have to do. The second part of the tutorial covers this too. In the video he extracts it to his desktop then drags it to the drop box in vortex. When I try to do that, it tells me directories are not supported. Ok so how do I make it whatever vortex wants in the drop box? I'm lost
