  1. Thanks Markus That is good advice. I will not have to worry about that because I do not use NMM. I prefer manual installation, although I did use NMM with Oblivion. I don't trust any SW that begins with 0.XXX and the writers arn't willing to take it out of beta. On the other hand, your advice is good becaue I want this final post I write later to be helpful to everyone. The question then becomes: Where are those NMM files located? Anyone? BTW if there is anything the above posters forgot, please let me know.
  2. Thaks Pro80 Good clear info, and that last location was what I was trying to remember. Yeah, I have the save games in about 4 backup locations. I don't use NMM although I did with Oblivion. I prefer to install mods myself, especially since it doesn't work on some things. I'll post a step by step for others when I get it all together and tear myself away from the game.
  3. Thanks Shyguy - and others That's what I'll be doing, with loading from the DVD., then Steam for updates and my first step will be to make a latest backup on my old system before singing out on it. I'll post results later.
  4. Thanks This is helpful. I am still not clear though and want to avoid crashing messes later. Will Steam automatically put the whole game on my SSD which is C:\ where the OS is? Neither Steam or the game are on the SSD yet. Do I use the original game DVD to install the game and Steam and then update, or Do I go streight to Steam, and DL it all? I really wish Steam was not part of this picture, I could have been playing a week ago. What is the proceedure I should follow and that others can refer to from this thread? 1. Have latest game version and Steam version updated on old PC and run backup on Steam. 2. Make your own copies of Save games and Data folder. 3. 4. 5. ? Please contribute your information and I will post a final thread with directions for everyone wtih acknowledgements.
  5. Rhowington is right. You cannot have two drives with the same copy of the OS on them. I just built a new rig and am in the provess of moving Skyrim over to it, so I am doing similar research. Still not sure how to do it just yet. Norton Utilities and CC Cleaner have registry fixers. I like Norton. You can move your OS, but it is definitly NOT worth it. You would have to uninstall it from the one drive (which will kill that drive so do not do it unless you get everything you need off of it because you will have zero access to it if you remove the OS. You would also have to reformat the SSD because the OS has to go on first. There is no reason for all this work since all you will save is some time loading the OS on boot because SSDs are faster. I installed a new OS (Win 8 with Retro UI to kill Metro which I despise) on my new SSD to avert the problem. I think you have three problems. First take out things that complicate the issue, like your performance monitor. Secondly, Those two . ini files are in two locations, not just the one rhowington menitoned above. I forget where the other one is right now and I don't have Skyrim on this system yet to look for it, but you can easily find out by searching the wiki for the game. They have to match. A third problem is probbly with SKSE. Many people have had a similar problem, including myself, and it had nothing to do with SSD s or the OS. SKSE is a common denominator since you probably have it installed regardless of readdressing the mods individually. Take it out and all mods, clean your registry with a utility program, and see what happens. You said it worked once. What were those conditions? If the game is still screwed it is the OS issue. If not: You must install SKSE EXACTLY according to the directions. Silverlock lists them as do some of the bigger mods that require it. You can't just run it as an administrator, you have to go through all the steps. Check the directions for the SkyUI mod, they are good and too long to post here.
  6. Hey Chaos corp Did you move Skyrim form a preious installation on your older PC, or install it first time on the new system? If moving it, please see my thread asking about the best way to do it and let me know how you did it. thanks man.
  7. Are you nuts? Of course I would upgrade, and have done so over the years for games. Why? because it improves your entire PC operation - more than just one game. I disagree with the above poster that this forum isn't the place to inquire on such things. I have used this forum for many years and there are some pretty savvy people on it. But I would agree about Tom's hardware and add to check out Asus' ROG (Republic of Gamers) forum. Here's the thing: Your video card is where its at. Always bump it first and the more memory on it you get the better. Before I built my new rig last month, I was running Skyrim maxed settings and AA forced on at 16X and AS at 16 X in the Nvidia control panel, 1920 X 1200 resolution with a Gygabyte Windforce GTX 680 card and only a dual core processor E6600 (OC to 3.33) 6 year old mobo, and 4 gigs RAM and 4gigs Ready boost USB. It was amazing. I even added a bunch of 2K texture packs. Do be sure you have the Power supply for a good card and do not go by minimum specs. Have lots of extra juice on the 12 volt rails. I Like 800 to 1000W Like Wicket . . .and Chaos Corps above I just upgraded my old rig last month. Built it myself - you save a lot of $$. My 2nd gaming rig build. This is the most beautiful game in the world. I take pics in it just for the view.
  8. New System - How Can I load modded Skyrim to it? This should be a common concern. I just built a new gaming rig. How do I get Skyrim up and running with the same progress and stats on the new system? I have my own backups of all save games, *.ini files, mods, and even a backup of the entire Data folder. I also made a Steam backup. Of course I have to get the game going first, but what is the best way to do that? Steam's page is unclear. Do I have to reinstall from DVD, or does Steam DL the game? Do I have to mess with steam files somehow? Do I have to delete the game from the old system, or can I leave it there too? For the mods, I assume after I get things going, I can copy my existing DATA folder with all the mods on top of the new installation (unmodded) DATA folder. I would assume this to be a common situation, but I did some searches here and found little on this issue, and the Steam site is confusing regarding new systems. NOTE: I am NOT asking about moving Steam from an existing HD to an SSD (or vice versa) or to a different drive on the same system. I am talking about a totally new system. If there are good links, please post as many as possible . There should be a sticky on this topic.
  9. Thanks, but I'm still not clear on the best way to get the game up and running. Does it need reinstalled from the DVD or does Steam restore a backup or what? One more question. Where are all the config and .ini files located? I know they are in more than one location but can't remember both, I know you have to change both for things to work right. Moderator: It would still be nice to have a step by step proceedure for the community, beginning with step one and Steam, and sticky it. Steam's web page is not clear. Thanks

  11. I am in the process of building a gaming rig. Deciding whether to put Win 7 or 8 on the SSD. What do you guys recommend?
  12. Ok, I found the problem in case someone else needs it. It was caused by a mod called Magicka revisited. A good mod but when disabled, the quest completed as it should.
  13. I did everything right, but Ancano cannot be harmed, even with console kill commands or setessential commands! Tolfdir won't talk to him and Ancano never attacks him or me or anyone. The last stage of the request won't kick off. I will try a resetquest mg08 stage number next, but I'm hoping someone has a solution first. I left and came back in, I only have one staff, I completed the entire quest correctly. Any clues?
  14. I have a quest bug at the college of winterhold. Ancano won't die, and Tolfdir won't talk to him I found suggestions for a solution here where it lists NPC IDs: I looked up Ancano and the related quest. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-NPCs there is a console command resetquest mg08e stage where stage is the stage number. use the Wiki above for your quest to get the number.
  15. there is a mod to fix it, do a search for Ancano in the forum
  16. when I tell the game to play in offline mode, it simply does not load. What's up with that? I click the TEXV.exer file and it still goes through Steam. there is no indirect approach. I resent that I was coerced into using Steam whether I wanted it or not. It should be illegal. I resent being treated like a fool who can't tell if he wants a patch or not. I want to load whatever mods I want without Steam dictating the procedure. I paid good money for my program just like I pay for any program and should be able to run it how I want to. Boycott Bethesda. I promise you, many thousands of people are ticked at Bethesda enough to stop buying their games. I know I am. They will loose far more money over this Steam fiasco than they ever would over game piracy. And it gets worse every day. A Steam hacked forum releases private information and now a bugged patch which the Stupid Steam program forced on my game before I wanted it! This sucks.
  17. What I want to know is HOW do you get off line mode to work? When I click to play offline, the game just refuses to load. I figured it was just a Steam lie and offline doesn't work. I even have firewall ability to block steam, but the game won't load up. Like so many thousands of others, I hate the fact that I was forced to load Steam. Just give me the program I paid good money for and leave me alone to load what ever patches and mods I want . I detest Bethesda for this and will never buy another of their games. I hope everyone boycots them.
  18. How did you get the game to play off line?? When I tell it to do so, it just fails to load. I hate Steam and do not want it. Offline is not possible
  19. There is a smarter, easier way to solve this problem. Always keep two saves of your current progress, and one save just a little behind them. Simply load one of your saves that works, and save it on top of the messed up one. You can also save your games with descriptive wording. 1. Hit the console key [~] 2. Type save "what you want to name the save game" note: put the name in quotes 3 . Close the console [~]
