  1. Heimsker. Woah. If there was any reason I'd agree with the Thalmor... There are so many mini-mods devoted to killing/shutting up Heimsker. Seriously though. Heimsker gets away with his public sermoning because Whiterun is the "border" city (even if "officially" it belongs to the Empire.) My guess is that the Thalmor don't want to make a martyr out of Heimsker and that's why he gets away with preaching all day long. You tried that crap in any city West of Whiterun and you would disappear real fast. The Empire is right, from their perspective. So are the Stormcloaks, from theirs. The Empire is doing what it feels is necessary so that it can rebuild from the great war. The Stormcloaks have had enough. If there is one thing that they share in common with Hammerfell, it is that they now believe they have to stand on their own. The Thalmor are playing a "both ends against the middle" strategy, -trying to weaken both the Empire and Skyrim. I'm hoping that the next TES will deal with the fallout of this. I would love to be in the center of the next great war.
  2. Wow. Just, wow. What a great thread. So, you both believe that Ulfric isn't racist (given the cultural/political structure of Skyrim.) Okay, I'll go along with that. But he is a jerk at truce conferences. (As anyone who's played "Season Unending" will attest to.)
  3. Go to your plugins tab on your NMM and uncheck all your mods. Load up your last save and confirm that you can start the quest without crashing. Exit out of your game. Recheck one mod and reload. If that mod doesn't cause you to crash, exit out and recheck another one. Rinse and repeat until you find the mod(s) that cause you to crash. Read the description of the mod(s) to see if there are any conflicts. Also try using BOSS to reorganize your load order. (Actually, you should try this first. Sorry, I'm sleepy right now.)
  4. Just type the words you want to be the link, drag your cursor over them to hightlight them, click the "link" icon at the top of your comment window (the chain with the green dot under it) and in the window that appears paste the actual link in the URL box. Also, I thought they patched the "Giant Smash You Into Orbit" glitch. Huh. Guess not after all.
  5. Well, I use Amazing Follower Tweaks: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15524/? It just does so much more for you.
  6. Ralof. But only because my character was Nord and it just made sense. I admit that the idea of payback against the Imperials was a strong motivation in my choice. However, I did take note of Hadvar's actions and words both before and after the (attempted) execution. 1) Hadvar protested that you were not on the list. He was overruled, but he did point out the problem. 2) He expressed sympathy directly to you after the bit... er, I mean "captain" overruled him. 3) He "rescued" the boy during Alduin's attack. (Right after you emerge from the ruined inn that you jumped to from the tower.) 4) With the bit... oops, I mean "captain" no longer around to countermand him, he guides you to safety. Then apparently takes a "What the heck" attitude (what with the town burning down around your ears, quite reasonable) cuts your bonds and offers you his trust by letting you arm yourself -surely knowing full well what could happen to him if you turn on him. So when I hit the point where I had to make my choice (in my first game) with those first three points in mind, it was an agonizing one even knowing full well that this choice didn't actually affect the overall storyline (since you can still choose either Empire or Stormcloaks later.) EDIT: It just occurred to me, shouldn't this thread be in "Spoilers"?
  7. I note that you have all three DLCs. Did you have them installed before or after crashing? If your game was working fine with the DLCs, and you've already tried cleaning up your load order, then check the description of the individual mods to see if any of them conflict with any of the DLCs (some do.) For example: I downloaded a mod called TK Children and activated it. My game then crashed at the logo each time I tried to start. After a bit of checking, I realized that I'd missed the warning in the mod's installation instruction that it activated .esp files for vanilla, dragonborn and hearthfire. But I only have vanilla Skyrim. When I unchecked the two .esp boxes (on the plugins tab) for DB and HF, the game worked normally. So if you still can't start after BOSSing your load order, start checking those mods descriptions for conflicts with your DLC. Also, Snowball0 is correct. Quickest way to test what's causing a conflict is to simply uncheck everything in your plugins tab (except for what you KNOW works.) Now re-check one mod and try to restart. If no problem, re-check another mod and try again until you hit a mod that causes your game to crash. Read that mod's description thoroughly to find what it is conflicting with.
  8. Friendly fire causing allied aggro is always tricky when you're swinging swords and warhammers or trying to fry your enemies with area spells. I can't help with much about that except to advise you to try and stay in front of your allies (CHARGE!) so that you don't hit them with weapons and spell blasts. Of course, that makes you target numero uno for the AI. To help with that, I recommend Amazing Follower Tweaks: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15524/? This mod allows you to recruit up to five followers (your choice how many), outfit and equip them as you see fit and, most importantly, tell them exactly how to fight. Example: assign #1 to be your personal healer. He/she will keep casting restoration and protective spells on you as you fight. Assign #2 and #3 to stick close to you and melee only. They'll protect your flanks and keep allies from getting too close to you (simply by staying between you and them.) Assign #4 and #5 to missile combat only and allow them to rove a bit. They'll start picking off those pesky enemy archers and spellcasters. Viola! Your own personal blitzkrieg squad. This isn't perfect of course. Occasionally one of your followers will cause aggro on an allied soldier by accident. (Ooopsie, that fireball was a bit off course. Sorry about that Ralof.) But at least it's on your follower, not you. You can decide whether to pull the follower out of the fight or not as you choose.
  9. This is an incredible thread. Please don't stop posting guys. Even your arguments with each other are brilliant. Incredible food-for-thought going on here. What really fascinates me about TES series is that we're witness to an entire world's history being created. And it is apparently really pushing our emotional buttons (witness threads like this one) and that means that the writers are really doing a fantastic job (even if you don't agree with some of their directions.) Oh, yeah. My take. Not everybody is racist in the world of Tamriel, but I do believe that the cultures depicted all certainly are to at least some extent. The comment above about races in TES being literally different as opposed to the artificial differences in our world really made me think about it quite a bit. Ulfric may not be racist (at least not overly) but he is certainly too caught up in his emotions to be anything but an arrogant jerk to anyone who disagrees with him. I got THAT impression real clear when I helped broker the cease-fire (pardon, truce) so that I could get on with the job of capturing a dragon and, you know, prevent everyone from eventually getting eaten by Alduin and his proteges.
  10. Hmmm. What are the possibilities of TES VI having tie-ins with TESO? Say, if you participate in a certain battle/quest/raid whatever, you get some sort of perk (or literally a perk) for your character in TES VI. Just a thought...
  11. Heh, heh. Great story! And yeah, the Blades are a bunch of unforgiving, stuck-up $#!%s at the end of the main-quest. Do you know about this mod? http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/18465/? It basically lets you spare Paarthurnax then go back and yell at the Blades and tell them to suck it up because your the Dragonborn and they're supposed to serve you. This allows you to complete the other Blades quests and still remain on good terms with the Greybeards.
  12. It's on the Nexus, but the page says: "This mod is under moderation review". I'm not sure what that means but I'm too afraid to ask since the page point-blankly says not to contact the site staff OR the mod author about the mod.
  13. Soul Jem? +1 respect. Both for the joke and pointing out that there are worse powers to be tied to than mere daedra... Jem? (shudder)
  14. pics or it didn't happen or a link Uh, on his Youtube site? Linked in his post at the top of this thread? Do I actually have to repeat the link? Okay, fine. (grumble, grumble) Here you go: Update video: Q & A video: Can I go now?
  15. I have the same video card and a ton of mods (many of them the same as yours) and am crashing intermittently when I enter inns and some houses. Since the game auto-saves, it usually lets me load back in without a problem. But I can see how this can get really annoying. I've tried disabling various mods (via the plug-in tab) and have noticed something interesting. It's not the specific mods I "disconnect" but rather, approximately how many that seems to make a difference. (By difference I mean less crashing.) My guess (and it's only a guess) is that I'm getting memory errors on my GPU since it's also only 2GB. Simply put, I think we are taxing our GPU's memory too much and are getting the occasional hiccup (ctd.) I'm considering upgrading to a GTX 770 4GB to compensate. (And because, honestly, who doesn't like a nice excuse to upgrade?)
  16. He's got a trailer video up plus a Q & A video. I am really looking forward to the rest of this.
  17. I don't see the sense in posting a poll about it. I would like to read an introspective discussion on a comparison between Mod Organizer and Nexus Mod Manager in this thread. (Reads comment by Razest) But... probably won't happen. As for the way the third option is worded... That's a bit antagonistic. "Scared?" Seriously? Now if you had worded it: "No thank you. I'm comfortable with NMM and am not interested in learning another mod manager." Now that would have gotten my vote.
  18. I had to respond because that is a very, very good point you make about PSUs. Folks, no matter what PSU you get, be like cjc75 and get a 80+ gold certified unit. Sure, it'll cost more, but the last thing you want is a cheap PSU that might quit, or worse, quit while sending a power surge through your $500+ GPU (and your mobo...) P.S. I don't believe in modular cables. That's just another potential failure point along the power path.
  19. I agree with ZeroKing. In this case, there is no such thing as "overkill" when it comes to upgrading to a new videocard. You just want to get the best bang-for-the-buck. In this regard, both AMD and Nvidia have good cards. It really comes down to budget. Here's a few suggestions. (I'm not going to name specific vendors because I don't want to get in trouble with a moderator.) "It's not really that big a tax-refund" GTX 760 (3GB version) $275. to $300. "Uncle Sam was good to me" Radeon HD 7970 (3GB version) $425. to $475. "Money is no object" GTX 780 Ti (3GB) $675. to $700.
  20. I agree (for the most part) with Lachdonin. Both sides are right. But both sides have, issues. Which is really brilliant of the game's storyline writers. It leaves you to choose your side (if you want to) with whatever justification you choose. But I would like to discuss the Thalmor. The face of the Aldmeri Dominion in Skyrim. No matter which side you favor, it becomes apparent during the game that the Thalmor are pleased, if not downright delighted, by the civil war. The revelation about Ulfric at the Thalmor embassy simply supports this. But there are many clues (in quests, books, personal diaries, etc.) that also show that the Thalmor aren't just neutral observers. Now, it is true that the Thalmor are present at Ulfric's impending execution at the beginning of the game, but that doesn't prove that they were pleased to see him about to be killed. Then again, maybe they would be glad. He (Ulfric) either got away from their control (if you believe that theory) or they may simply believe that he had become too dangerous and might actually have a chance to reunite Skyrim in a sweeping campaign. Why would this bother them? Well, we all know that the peace between the Empire and the Dominion is uneasy at best. Clearly, a prolonged civil war in Skyrim would do nothing but weaken the Empire (at least in Skyrim) and, or course, weaken Skyrim itself if the Nords under Ulfric eventually prevailed. Either outcome is good for the Dominion. The only thing that would be bad for the Dominion is if the war came to an abrupt halt. Either by one side or the other winning in a series of stunning victories aided by a heroic (whisper it) Dragonborn, OR the war grounding to a halt because a long-lasting truce is orchestrated by that same hero turned diplomat. Oh, gee. Guess what your character ends up doing? No matter which side you choose (or decide not to choose) your character has truly thrown a King Kong sized monkey wrench into the carefully ordered works of the Dominion. Remember what Tullius says to you at the end of the civil war (if you sided with the Stormcloaks)? He blames the Thalmor for pushing him into most of the actions that pissed of the majority of Nords and goaded Ulfric into confronting Torryg. So take heart. Don't lose sleep worrying if you supported the "right" side. Because either way, you've either shortened the war (saving lives) or stopped it via a truce (saving even more lives.) No matter what path you've chosen, you've saved lives and pissed off the Dominion royally. That's a "win" in my book.
  21. Hah, hah! I remember that quest. "A Daedra's Best Friend." You either returned the axe to the daedra lord, Clavicus Vile. Or you took him up on his offer to keep the axe and planted it right between the dog's eyes. Either way, you got rid of the dog. Also, the dog's name is Barbas. Maybe you were getting confused with Babette, the little girl vampire from the Dark Brotherhood? Edit: Oh, I guess I should share my favorite moment. Okay, there's this fort just Northwest of Wolfskull Cave (I forget the name.) I was walking up the road and ran into a party of four Thalmor Justicars traveling Eastward. Naturally, they told me to fob off or else. So I walked up to the fort to investigate, -and was promptly set upon by eight (yes, eight) bandits that came pouring out of the main gate. Now I could have taken them out, but then I remembered the Thalmor just down the road. So instead of fighting, I zig-zagged slowly back and forth, leading the bandits down the trail to the main road. Sure enough, there were the Justicars still sauntering down the road. I ran right through them to a chorus of "Hey!", "Watch it" heavily pursued by a storm of bandit arrows and magic bolts. As one, the Thalmor turned on their heels and started firing lightning and arrows into the bandits. The bandits screeched to a stop and started a fighting withdrawal as the Justicars were truly pissed. I followed along behind, stopping to loot the occasional bandit corpse. When the battle reached the fort entrance, more bandits took up position on the walls firing arrows down at the Thalmor. This caused a temporary halt to the Justicars advance. But then a patrol of Imperial soldiers showed up (attracted by the sounds of battle) and promptly joined the fight breaking the deadlock. Whistling happily, I followed the elves and soldiers into the fort, stopping to strip each corpse I encountered. By the time the battle ended, only two Imperial soldiers limped out of the fort. All of the Thalmor and bandits were dead. I stripped the remaining corpses of weapons, armor and items, then proceeded to loot the fort. Since I've installed a mod that lets you make carrying bags, pouches and bandoliers on a tanning rack, I had plenty of carrying capacity and didn't have to leave anything behind. Sure, I didn't get much combat XP, but I left the fort with over 2,000 gold worth of sell-able loot from the bodies alone (not counting what I looted from the fort.) Best of all, I got to off those stuck-up Justicars by simply leading them into overwhelming odds. Treasure and appropriate revenge. Ahhhh!
  22. Do NOT turn off your UAC! If it is still off, turn it back on (at least to default) before downloading anything else. Also, get your AV and firewall back up! Okay, if I understand correctly, you got the installer to download but can't get it to open, right? If so, try right-clicking on the installer. Click on "Properties". Depending on your Windows OS you should have the option to change the permission for the installer itself (rather than shutting down your overall security.) In Win 7, for example, this would be under the "Security" tab. If that doesn't help, are you using Chrome? Chrome has a sandbox environment that sometimes interferes with .exe files. Try another browser to download (and shut your Chrome completely down before trying to open the installer.) I know. That doesn't make sense to me either. But it has worked for others who use Chrome. Edit: To those wondering why they (the NMM team) couldn't just enable updating through the previous version: This was a "forced" update. That is because if they let you update through the previous version, then the previous version would still be going online the moment it was activated by each user. And THAT is what was creating such a drain on the NMM servers. (Well, one of the things.) By "forcing" the update, it stops all the problem-causing traffic dead in its tracks. Also, (and let me admit here that I am certainly a lazy person) a lot of users wouldn't bother updating for a long time if the update was enabled through the previous version. Which means those previous versions would be creating all sorts of problems for everyone. So, yes, it was very necessary to do it this way.
  23. Go to this page: http://www.nexusmods.com/games/? Find the NMM install link at the top center of the page. It says: Install NMM 0.47.1 currently. On the page that appears, click the "DOWNLOAD NOW" button. Choose "Save File". Save it to your desktop is simplest. If you cannot download the file, check to make sure that your AV (anti-virus) and/or browser and/or UAC (Windows) is/are not blocking the download. Double click the file to start the installer. If it doesn't start, it is most likely your UAC blocking it. If your AV complains about NMM, that is a false positive. Tell your AV to stop whining er, I mean to make an exception. The installer should automatically find your original path/folder of your earlier NMM installation. (You did say you are updating, right?) Confirm this through your Windows Explorer if you're worried. Start clicking "Yes, yes, yes..." (GNU license, language, do you want a start folder, etc.) When you finish, the installer will install 0.47.1 right over your old installation. Your mods should show up instantly in their original load order. (Check the plug-in tab to be certain.) Some people have reported that they had to restart NMM a couple of times to get everything to show up correctly. A few have reported that they had to restart their PC to get NMM working properly. These instances seem to be rare, but try these two options first before posting that your update didn't work. You new NMM will now start in OFFLINE mode. To go to ONLINE mode, click the little red-colored "buddy" icon in the lower left of your NMM window. When you go ONLINE the buddy icon will turn green. You will also see an empty download speed window open next to it. This only registers a speed when you start to download a new mod. Hope this helps! Edit: OH, (insert your favorite Diety) Dark0ne! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! (Teary-eyed)
  24. I turned off my No-Script plug-in, told Avast to stop blocking the adds through their Firefox plug-in, then told Firefox itself to let 'er rip. But, I still can't see the ads. Don't know what I'm missing... weird. However, I will be buying a premium membership next month. So I hope that will make up for not being able to support you guys through the ad clicks.
  25. 8,500 concurrent users? Yikes, dats a lota server requests. (Oh crap, I've slid into Mario-speak...) Dark0ne, we really appreciate these updates. We can see that you're battling mightily (and sacrificing much personal time) to get these issues resolved. I'm guessing that your recent, ahh, "discussions" in this thread were... a kind of catharsis for you. If so, hope you're feeling better now. Please know that the vast bulk of us (as opposed to the shrill minority) are rooting for you and your coders and do understand that this is going to take time to get all straightened out.
