  1. Is downloading mods a hobby?

Morrowind has so many now, even back when it came out, there was a huge number of websites with mods for it. All providing mods for, JUST, Morrowind.

Trying to get them all to work was a hobby. Burning up hard drives, CD, DVD drives and other computer parts and building a new computer became a hobby.

After a hundred or so websites I visited with mods and Morrowind forums with modders discussing their work etc. I discovered a way to channel the energy from some of the headaches Ye Ol' Puter was giving me. I found technical advice web pages.

After many tweaks, from forum member offering help I learned how to make a computer, from parts and which parts were important for the game... MORROWIND... The first time signed up with a forum was an incredible experience.

Since I was not a modder it was a total ink spot on my tie experience.

Later, that same year I found myself drawn to TESnexus from Canadian Ice and Howndog's forum.

And yet another ton of mods to check out and play.

I found oodles of good to EXCELLENT mods. At Telesphoro's List of Mods there is a great number in the list I did download. And many other websites I found which had some mods that were complete redoes and overhauls for Morrowind.

Yeah! I think that downloading mods for Morrowind was a hobby. Mainly; because I didn't expect anyone from any other company, not even Bethesda Softworks, to ever make a better game then Morrowind.

    I was Wrong!

    Or was I?!

    Hm?

So many games, mods for them, and so little time.

I'm going with downloading Mods is a Hobby!

The alternative is some kind of psychosis or mental illness judging by how much time I spend researching, downloading and testing Mods.

    So yeah...HOBBY.

  2. Well, lets see...

Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Brazil, Virgin Islands, Greenland, Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Guam, Okinawa, Wake Island, Diego Garcia, Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, India, Iran, Gibraltar, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Finland, Norway, Sweden, England, France, Italy, Iraq, Singapore, Hong Kong, Pago Pago, Russia, Suez Canal, Jabuti, Tibet, Adak, McMurdo, Scott Base, Vostok, South Pole, Spain, Egypt, Libya, Afghanistan, Germany, Thailand, Pakistan, Tanzania, Hawaii and Panama...and all but four States in the U.S.

I have Sun Tanned on beaches on the equator, walked in Scotts footsteps in Antarctica, stood on both the North and South Poles, sailed through the Suez and Panama canals, explored ice caves in both hemispheres, Ice and rock climbed in the Andes, Himilayas, Rockies and Cascades. I have eaten fried rice in Japan, Papaya in Pago Pago, Pancit in the Philippines, grilled Swordfish on the Barbi in Australia and Tacos in Mexico. I have drank with Aussies, Kiwis, Japanese, Russkies, Indians, Tibetians, Guamanians, Chinese, and Koreans. I have Scuba Dived in almost every Ocean and most of the worlds Seas. I have made love to a beautiful woman in practically every country I visited. I have Skied/Snowboarded mountains all over the globe, Snow Shoed on Everest and had sex on the peak of Kilimanjaro. I partied with naked women at Carnival in Rio de Janero and had sex with three gorgeous women during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I have sailed around the world three times and flown around the world more times than I can remember. I have smoked Thai Stick in Thailand, Acapulco Gold in Hawaii and Sticky Bud in the Pacific NW.

    So, yeah I like travelling.

I'm retired now. Planted trees in the front yard and experiencing what it's like living in just one place.

    I miss the adventure...

  3. According to this poll I will no longer be represented as a numerical expression in two months when I turn 62.

Henceforth, I shall be + years old.

I would like to thank the author of said poll. Living past 61 will be positive to infinity and beyond...

  4. I like Dogs and Cats.

I like laughing with my Lover.

    I like Flying.

    I like Gaming.

I like Hiking above 4K feet. Staying up all night in a sleeping bag making hot tea on a mountain stove staring up at the stars and then falling off to sleep as the Sun rises.

  5. I don't believe Creativity is being destroyed by anyone or anything.

I do believe that the Creative genius that is being created by todays society/technology is mostly unrecognizable by someone in my age group.

Evolution is designed so that the old is replaced by the new. My experiences enhanced my creative genius, just as the now generations creativity is enhanced and developed by their experiences.

Just because none of it resembles my experiences means it is good or bad. Remember when the previous generations said that Rock and Roll would rot our brains? TV was gonna stifle our creativity?

Never underestimate the power of the human mind nor the ability of the next generation to build what you once perceived as impossible.

  6. Freedom is nothing more than an abstract idea.

I have travelled all across this planet experiencing different societies and governments. Each one is designed to extoll it's virtues and ideas of freedom upon the masses, systematically eliminating those that disagree.

The problem is the human element. There has always existed those who enjoy causing harm and pain to others. If laws eliminated this behavior it would have ceased to exist long ago. Obviously laws aren't the answer.

A Utopian society might enjoy some form of 'freedom', however, such a society does not exist.

Comparing nations in regards to how much 'freedom' they enjoy is pointless. Why? Study human history and it will become apparent that our main preoccupation is conflict with each other. Pick a side and destroy the other so that you are free from their tyranny. Rinse and repeat.

  7. My preference is the same as yours. I like the left side to be on the left and the right side on the right. I always re-map keys in any game that allows me so as to suit my preference and style of play. I also use some special add-on controllers as well. I find that keeping some things lined up in a left side right side 'real life' configuration contributes to a natural intuitiveness when gaming. Or at least it does for me. It all comes down to personal preference.
  8. OK, not a Mod expert here but I'll pass on some advice that works for me;

    1. (I list this as #1 because I feel it is the reason I don't suffer from CTD's or conflicts) Read the instructions on the MOD page! Many times the author will have known conflicts listed there.

    2. Read all the comments on the MOD page. Players before you have already tested the MOD and tell of their experiences there.

    3. Use BOSS for your MOD load order. That said you should learn everything you can about load order yourself since many times you must simply adjust it manually to resolve conflicts. Lots of tutorials on this sight.

    4. Install one MOD at a time. Then play test it (ie play and adjust load order). If it creates conflicts then de-activate via NMM and go back to the save prior to the activation/install. Cumbersome I know...but better than a screwed up game you've invested 100's of hrs into only to have to start all over.

    5. Be aware that the Skyrim save sometimes retains parts of a MOD even after you uninstall. Clean saves are very important. Sometimes its the baggage in the save game that screws everything up.

    6. How MODs work depend on your system, the MODS you have installed and where you installed them. Which means it is going to be different for almost every user. Bottom line, there is no secret master plan. But the more you read and study concerning each MOD makes it easier but never perfect.

    7. Read the forums here. I am by no means a MOD 'expert' but they exist here on the Nexus. The members here seem to always be willing to help. And I rate most of them pretty high.

I hope that this helps you. Welcome to the world of MODS!

  9. Plagarism/theft/infringement unfortunately occurs in every area of human creation or invention. Since we honor creationism and inventiveness we must always seek out and expose those who would take someone elses work and claim it as their own.

I am not a Mod author yet (working on it though). However some years ago I was the victim of this type of crime. I had to watch another person stand before a large audience and actually have a prestigious medal pinned on his chest for work that he had zero part in creating. It was all mine. But I failed to think I needed to protect my work because I didn't think anyone would do such a thing. I was wrong!

But we should also be careful here. If you don't have defentitive proof that someone commited a crime then you yourself are commiting a crime by defaming their character. And if you later discover that they didn't actually commit the crime you 'thought' they had commited it is too late to undo the damage already done to them. In this country we don't accuse someone of a crime we think they commited and then expect them to defend their innocence. In this country we are innocent until proven guilty.

My point is that we should make sure we use the correct procedure to combat Mod theft. We should use the reporting prodecures provided. Show support such as we see with 'player two' and sign a page or petition to get attention focused where it needs to be and motivate the people in authority to take action.

I personally use ice penguins Mod that has been allegedly stolen. If it turns out that it was indeed stolen then I think the consequences for such theft should be as severe as possible. If Steam allows such behaviour it will become something I am convinced they will eventually regret. Even though this type of crime occurs in all areas of creation and invention it is not considered as acceptable in society.

We should all remember that supporting Mod authors goes beyond just an endorsement. It also includes getting behind them when someone threatens or steals their work. We should also remember that witch hunts are not how we should support Mod authors and their work.

  10. To the OP;

In my previous post I didn't call you a Troll...but I did insinuate it. I love Skyrim. I also agree with you that it has many drawbacks. I suppose I just took a little offense. I apologize for insinuating that you were Trolling. Not my place to do so as the DMM pointed out in previous post, and I am not above admitting I was wrong.

I am not one to deny someone the right to voice their opinion. I spent a career defending that very right. No one needs to own or even have played the game to be a member on these forums. Not my business to question why you're here.

We each play the game in our own way and get different things from it. If the forums were just for Skyrim lovers it would get pretty dull. Looking forward to your next post/thread...even if I don't like it.

  11. I agree with all the previous posters. Just want to add that the author of the article stated that he only used one Mod! C'mon man how does that qualify/quantify the statement that Modding and console use detracts from the game!!??

It seems to me that he could have done better research before reaching such a conclusion and then publishing it. I don't know any console player that started Skyrim on a console and switched to PC that hasn't felt that the PC version with Mods is a far better gaming experience and will never go back.

The ability to use the console on the PC is cheating? Use the console and it speaks for itself.

The article is obviously very biased and doesn't warrant any consideration as valid.

p.s. @pharmakoschroster The first time I loaded Skyrim I stated out loud "Oh My God! What idiot designed this menu system? I thought I had fallen into a hot tub and went back in time!"

  12. It's because the game is for me that I'm whining.

I noticed that you didn't bash 'Trolls'. Perhaps you like 'Trolls'. Mostly we don't like 'Trolls' here in the NEXUS forums. I think we're all aware that you don't like Skyrim. I just can't figure out why you're here.

  13. To the OP; In a general sense I agree with you. But only because I don't think there is a 'perfect' game anywhere out there. I also agree with the posts that state one should not have to 'fix' the game.

But I see it from a very different perspective. One where the game is a canvas. The only way to create a perfect game is to create one that caters to my very specific needs/desires. Unless I design and create it myself that isn't likely to happen. Which brings me to the very reason I am here on the NEXUS.

With the game that Bethesda created and the Mods created by the authors here on the NEXUS I can in a very large way shape and adjust the game to more of how I think it should be. And Bethesda provides the creation kit free of charge! I think we all have to agree that they actually expect you to modify the game to your personal needs/desires.

Perfection is a carrot stick game anyway. You could spend a liftime trying to straighten every picture in the world or you could step back and just enjoy the picture.

  14. Thanks for the heads-up Sgt Rock.

    Dungeons 1.1 installed (now de-activated)

Wilds 1.01 (used it only for testing long ago and noticed a performance hit and de-activated without ever creating an in-game save)

Checked for the listed files and folders after de-activating Dungeons and found none to be present. I had played with this Mod for about three hundred hrs without any issues.

Just started a new playthrough and was actually planning to upgrade them both and give the wilds another test run as well as civilization only a few days ago. Got busy in real life and didn't have time.

Hope cliffworms gets it worked out. SoS adds so much to the game. Again thanx for the heads-up.

  15. I suggest you download and install the Deadly Dragons Mod. I promise you it will give you a whole new perspective on the Dragons in Skyrim.

That actually was the most unwise thing you could have said. If you offer me 3rd party mods to repair an issue then you only confirm what I said :wallbash:

And this also proves that you dont understand what I said - I said that the dragons can only be considered powerful in Skyrim but in Morrowind and Oblivion they would be a laugh.

More over if you offer me 3rd party mods it means you are unhappy with vanilla Skyrim. In Oblivion such a mod would be useless because all you have to do is move the difficulty slider to the right and presto instant insane difficulty. Your words remind me of cabaret I once saw in which a guy is trying to sell a car to another guy and the more they talk about the car it turns out that it has more and more parts missing or broken. Finally the buyer asks " does this car have anything that is whole?" and the salesman says "yes the ignition keys". So thats what Skyrim is then - a wreck with only the ignition keys intact. So yeah Bethesda cheated us all but hey no problem the 3rd party mods will repair everything and Bethesda will get full price with no extra effort.

    Here goes some more 'unwise' things;

So you see, I bought this car (Skyrim) the other day. I must admit the salesperson (Bethesda) was very good. I couldn't wait to take it out for a spin! And I have to say I enjoyed the ride, but it only had a AM radio (vanilla Dragons). So I went to the store (Nexus) to look for a new stereo (MOD). I found one that was so awesome I had to have it (Download it). The best part is that it didn't cost me anything (Thank you to Modders)!

I have since installed 114 options (Mods) on my original car (game). There are currently 16,535 options (Mods) available at the time of this post (Free of Charge!). I guess I could return the car (game) to the dealer (Bethesda) because it needed a lot of work when I purchased it, but the NEXUS garage has turned my car (game) into a souped-up Hot Rod!

To the OP; I hope you enjoyed my analogy as much as I enjoyed yours. If you don't like Skyrim you might think of doing something else with your time besides getting on a forum for Skyrim and bashing the game. I personally support all viewpoints. But some posters like to throw threads out there just to get a rise out of people. But I can tell by your post that you aren't one of those people.

Well, I'm gonna go take my car for a spin (I got leather seats last night (Ria, a Mod))...I do love it!!

p.s. You could always take your keys to a used car lot. But man those guys are worse than the dealership.
