  1. Since Whiterun would require lots of work to bring it's defenses up to par I would have to go with Solitude. It can be defended as it is now. Besides it's not always a good idea to mix government and trade in the same room.

However, as a base for government operations Riften is a great candidate since all the crooked people could run for office without having to relocate.

  2. Started out on the PS3. Never played it on the 360 but I can tell you there is no comparison. PC all the way!

And the whole MOD thing? It's like opening a present only to find a larger one inside. My list of playthroughs and Skyrim world experiments to try is virtually limitless. There isn't anything else out there that offers that kind of value. I still have two great titles I got for christmas that I haven't even played yet.

  3. Ahh Lass Um gonna to hav to ass ya for ya killing license. No butts about it, butt it seems ya hav violated the Skyrim killing ordinance 00u812 which clearly states thou shalt not use an arrow in such a manner so as to cause relentless mirthy comments about its use or cause panicky mirth among the local inhabitants.

I havn't seen a more grievous violation since that poor bloke took an arrow to the knee a few years back!

  4. I don't understand the hate for Steam.

I haven't had many problems aside from minor inconvenience. I rather like picking up games for a fourth of their price every once in a while.

*shrug* Guess I'll just go play some TF2 while you guys rage about it.

I don't either. Not one person that said they hated Steam actually gave a good reason as to why. Other than the inconvenience.

Okay, here are my opinions of Steam:

Steals data - Steam provides Valve user data about your game habits and software which they use to make money. I'll happily sell Valve that info.

DRM FUD - It does not require a lifelong, forced relationship and perpetually running client to validate a software installation. Not even Microsoft does this.

3rd Party - I bought a product from Bethesda/Zenimax, but Valve controls almost every aspect of the product lifecycle. Who has Seller responsibilities in the Buyer/Seller relationship? Steam TOS denies responsibility for anything, even the software actually running.

Decreased value - I cannot sell my DVD to someone else when I'm done. Not even a used game store.

Performance - downloads take a LONG time and I have cable broadband. Sometimes it takes Steam 2 or 3 times to do a download.

Misleading - Steam Offline option isn't; it still contacts Valve\Steam and updates the client AND your game even if "Do not update game" is selected. Has broken my savegames twice now. (First patch and I don't know which later one; it uploaded three patches at once when I accidentally let it get an internet connection.)

Steam is not DRM, it is a retail sales, advertising and marketing scam foisted upon users under the false guise of DRM. Valve\Steam has so many "users" because it is not optional; we're not users, we're prisoners. You can't opt out of data collection or upgrades, it spams advertising, and its "settings" don't do what they say they do. Steam is malware and I have to treat it as such. Steam tech support is a joke, and if your "account" has a problem, they stop your games from running (that is not DRM, its retail blackmail.). Steam only purports to be DRM. I can't really talk about specific issues with that on these forums because of piracy rules. Suffice it to say that complicated client software requiring constant connections to remote servers, online stores, multiplayer game servers, community chats, and discussion forums are not required of a DRM program. Steam does not impact pirates. What share of the Skyrim market involves PC's anyways? Its a console game. Steam only impacts honest users, people who actually BUY games. Think about that and then all those Steam "features". How many of them relate to DRM or piracy? How many to game sales? I'm sick of being treated like a criminal just to run a single player game, especially when that treatment is part of an incredibly greedy on-line sales business model. All the Steam fanbois can continue to use it and sing its praise. Just wait till they start charging for user mods. "Uh, yeah, that new mod download charge is only used to cover our hardware and bandwidth costs. Yeah, yeah, its expensive for us to provide that service and we offer it to our users at a very low cost. Same for the new monthly service charge." Paranoia? There is absolutely nothing to stop them from doing stuff like that because they are a software sales business with captive customers. What other business in America has a captive, dependent, guaranteed customer base? Not many, they're called monopolies. Actually read their TOS, EULA, and privacy policies if you think I'm exaggerating. Ask yourself why you really can't opt out of most Steam "features". I want no part of Valve\Steam's "business philosophy" or their "products", nor do I wish to support them with data or information used to promote their business. But I don't have a choice if I want to play a game published by a company I DO want to support. If I don't like Wal-Mart, or Target, or whomever, I shop for the exact same product somewhere else. Not here. Not with video games. I have no choice. We have no choice. And Valve knows it; they created it and their business model depends upon it. I no longer allow my family to purchase Steamworks games after my experience with Skyrim and Valve. Sorry, Bethesda, its been a long, fun ride, but I'm sure you'll be fine without me.

 Whew! I couldn't agree with you more...However...One cannot be considered a prisoner if you walk in freely and the door is always open. I love Skyrim and if it means putting up with Steam then so be it. The OP made the choice to no longer play Skyrim or deal with Steam. Good for him. But getting on this forum and ranting about it after you have made the decision to no longer play the game is pointless!

I knew I would deal with Steam when I bought the game

I knew I wouldn't be able to re-sell the game

I knew there would be bugs in the game

I knew what I was buying

I knew that Steam collects data

If you make the choice to no longer shop at Walmart and go there to stand in front of it and yell at me how much you dislike the store you are performing a futile act! I support your right to choose but if you have a legitimate complaint with Bethesda or Steam shouldn't you direct it at them?

I love Skyrim. I anxiously await the next open world title that is released by Bethesda no matter how they release it.

  5. Had to go right over to FO3 to check out the News Feed feature. I must say I like it. I enjoy insightful commentary from the Mod authors. The Mod page is fine but is mostly an explanation of what they did and how you should use it (which is very important).

It is my hope that the authors will take full advantage of this new feature. And as far as spamming goes...I am confident the Nexus staff will keep it contained as they already do a great job of monitoring the sites.

p.s. The progression with the new code seems to be going well. I have noticed continued improvement in speed and content. Keep up the good work.

  6. I am able to take out opponets on either side of my horse. I can do a quick swing at them or hold my sword out while leaning out and swipe/swing them as I ride by. Shorter reach when I swing across body of course. The only type of Mods I have read about that screw up mounted combat are the animation mods. I do not have nor have I had any of those activated in my game. I do have kill move mods installed but it doesn't seem to have any Ill effects on mounted combat.

I also only use Better Horses, Horses for followers and Slofs Horses. I hope this info helps and you can figure it out as I suspect that your mounted combat isn't working correctly.

  7. I personally like the following for using console commands. It is user friendly which will give you some confidence when first learning to use console commands. I suggest printing it out as it is only 17pgs. Be sure to read the General information given in the beginning.

    http://www.uesp.net/.../Skyrim:Console

    Another way to accomplish what your wanting is with this Mod by gopher;

    Immersive Hud

    http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3222

With this Mod installed you will be able to toggle them off in-game without the need for console commands. Plus I prefer to only have the Hud/crosshairs on the screen when I wish to use them. Otherwise they just yuk up the beauty of Skyrim.

  8. I was driving through downtown Seattle the other day and noticed moss and vines hanging from the overpasses. I thought to myself... "I should harvest those."

Of course you explain this to the officer...then the guys in the white coats show up and offer free accomadations. LMAO!

  9. When I'm out doing errands and I think to myself, "I need to check the quest list."

or how about when the wife told me something isn't working and I respond with,

"Oh, don't worry, I know of a Mod that will fix that."

  10. DO NOT USE BETTER HORSES

it's a dead mod right now and completely inferior in every way to CONVENIENT HORSES. that + UFO will take care of your horse + follower's horses needs and even plays well with horse armor mods

better horses just hasn't been updated in months and while it still does what it was meant to do, it's just outdated and if you use UFO, 5 followers trying to ride from point A to point B is an unmitigated disaster. convenient horses just has more options and everything i could think of was included and i love it. really an underrated mod

i recently made the swap and there is no reason whatsoever to use better horses ever again. convenient horses does everything better and on top of that, does more.

also i sent you a PM with a list of basic but game-changing mods. if you'll tell me your computer specs i can get you some custom .ini files made so you can avoid having to spend days playing with settings

    @k357 and elfriend

I respectfully disagree with this post as a point in case. Each recommendation you ask for is going to be influenced by personal choice and desire of the player and validated as per the system they use.

Better Horses is not DEAD. It is still up on the Nexus. In fact it currently has 745 endorsements as compared to 266 for Convenient Horses. (Number 745 having posted just as I did a quick review prior to this post) Does this mean it is better or worse? That should be up to you to decide. If you read the comments on the Mod pages for both Mods you will see that there are plenty of issues concerning both Mods. For my style of play Better Horses is perfect. Plus it functions perfectly. Convenient Horses does indeed offer more functions and options.

My rule for Mods is that they function in the game without CTD's and are compatible with the other Mods I choose to use. When I am hundreds of hours into a playthrough I try not to look for greener grass all the time. Which is why you should take your time and do your homework and testing now when you are building your game for play. That way you will avoid messing with it right in the middle of a playthrough.

    @greysinsanderson

Just so ya know I agree that Convenient Horses is better than Better Horses in regards to options. I don't know why LtMattmoo is off the scene right now (his business). His Mod is great work, is not 'dead' and deserves the respect it has earned.

  11. you need to read. an hour of reading would save you days of frustration

you need to look at your skyrim folder without ANY mods in it. you need to see what is there so you know what to remove later (if necessary, most mods uninstall completely via NMM) because right now you're doing it wrong and expecting positive results and that just never happens

people who refuse to do their research so they know what they're doing are running modders off from this scene. you really shouldn't touch a mod at all until you know the simple stuff like what the subfolders are all for, what core files are, what the .ini templates are, and what you need to do to "start fresh" because deleting everything and redownloading isn't it

you should never have to redownload the game. the main files aren't altered in any way by modding and are 95% of what you download. they can't be accidentally altered in any way

the stuff in the folders inside your skyrim folder can be deleted and redownloaded in 2-5 mins. that's the stuff you can get rid of if you're wanting a fresh install.

right now you are your own worst enemy. skyrim with mods is 100% worth it.

I know I already stressed some of this in my earlier post but I just want to get behind this post as it is well stated! Some time invested on your part makes the whole Modding scene better. Kudos to you greysinsanderson!

  12. Along with the previous menu suggestions I recommend Catagorized Favorites Menu and a small but very nice Mod EZ2C Dialogue Menu because the vanilla dialogue menu is hard to read.

If your gonna use horses there is Better Horses, I haven't had any conflict issues with it. I also use Horses for Followers without issue.

I really like EDWS Enhanced Dynamic Weather System. Like Frostfall it adds some realism that Bethesda left out.

If your like everyone else and hate or are confused by the calendar system in Skyrim Then get Modern Day Calendar Names.

Sounds like you like combat, get The Dance of Death - a killmove Mod. Verified today that it works just fine with 1.6. Be aware: Animation mods have been reporting conflicts with 1.6 so be sure to check the Mod page and comments carefully before using any of these. The authors will get that resolved in no time, if not already, just check before activating.

Most Armour and weapons Mods are pretty safe. Except some of the real HD intensive ones. Some tend to slow down weapon draws. But again that depends on your system.

Skyrim has a Save Game issue. It is recommended that you DON'T use autosaves. But I can't stress enough to save, save, save! If you ever have to go back to a previous save but don't know what your Mod build was then use SavegameScanner. You can download it in the utilities catagory in the Mods listing. It will scan your save and tell you Mods, versions and Mod order at the time of that save. When you experiment with a Mod but it is problematic you might want to go back to the save before you activated it as some Mods leave stuff in the save game. It can cause big problems. A good practice is to make a clean save prior to using the Mod, that way you don't lose a lot of game play.

@Elfriend you indicated that you have an Nvidia card. I highly recommend http://www.geforce.c...de?sf2686171=1/

@k357 recommend you check out the same tweak guide as most of it can be applied on other cards as well.

  13. Welcome to the Nexus and Modded Skyrim.

I can understand and relate to the frustration playing the vanilla game on a console. My wife bought my first Skyrim for me as a Xmas present for the PS-3. At 250hrs I was done with that experience.

As I am sure you are aware every PC system is different. The graphics level you will be able to play at depends on your system capabilities. Plus the Mods you install will also depend upon yous system capabilities. Any kind of recommendations for Mods would require you to reveal this info.

But let me add this in regards to using Mods. I currently have 100+ Mods currently running on Ultra High with no CTD's and no conflicts.

How each player wants the game to look/play is of course different and a matter of personal choice. But I can't stress strongly enough that you need to read each Mod page carefully and completely. Most Mod problems can be avoided if you do this. I also recommend reading all the comments posted on the Mod page. It pays to use the wisdom from those before you and it keeps the Mod author from needing to reply to the same questions over and over.

Apply one Mod at a time. Test it in-game. If it created any problems then you know it was that Mod was where the problem began. I use NMM to install and un-install all Mods. I use BOSS to order all Mods.

I don't want to seem preachy or anything. But I use this system to apply Mods and I don't have any problems with my game at all. I'm not saying there haven't been Mods that created problens or conflicts but I either resolved the problem or de-activated the Mod. There are lots of Mods out there I wish I could use but don't because they were problematic.

Hang in there...Modded Skyrim is great!

  14. ANY mod that included animation MAY be affected. Try it and see. Then let us know.

I use both SKSE and Script Dragon. While SKSE updates quickly Script Dragon does not. So I won't actually be installing the 1.6 until then. I am hoping someone already knows the answer to my questions. I would love to try the new patch now that it's out of beta but I already know it will cripple my game if I do. Doesn't make sense to bump my head if someone else already did.:wallbash:

  15. In anticipation for downloading 1.6 I have read every post concerning it's performance. Apparently the animation Mods present a problem. First off thanks to all of the players that tested 1.6 and shared that info with the community.

My questions are: "Because TRO Basic needs has some animations in it does that make it a 'animation mod'?" Plus, "Do the added Kill Moves in Dance of Death count as animations?"

Thanx ahead of time as I know many of you know the answers I am seeking.

  16. It would be cool if they added some sort of MULTIPLAYER area where players could set up a private match and face off against each other, or team up and fight waves upon waves of monsters together. Its not like they haven't had multiplayer in previous games (Battlespire) and it would be a good beta test for elder scrolls online. All they would have to do is disable console commands and mods in such an area to keep it fair.

Edit- Silly thing had a 'Bad Gateway' and wiped out my post and left only the quote! So...

I like this idea for a DLC! Unreal did it with Unreal Tournament and was blown away with the response that it got. Beth had an Arena in Oblivion and for some reason didn't include it in Skyrim. My hope is that maybe they have plans to make it a DLC. I hope. There are endless possibilities and examples/themes to choose from. Maybe we should start a petition to Beth? I want one so bad I'm even willing to...beg!?!:ermm:

Single player or Multi-player I don't care. Just do it!

To the OP: I like all of your ideas! But especially #3!

  17. The reality is that game consoles have the edge right now. They have a huge market/fan base. But with the changes in the Mod communities I think there is a good chance that PC gaming could create/expand what will be a new genre of gaming in the future. It is in it's infancy now but is certainly growing, evident in the numbers of console gamers returning to PC gaming (Modding in-particular).

In a way Bethesda did the Modding community a favor IMHO. Because the vanilla game of Skyrim is so blah I have witnessed a tremendous level of creativity from Modders to 'make the game what it should have been'. And given the level of possibilities built into the game it has been and is awesome. I keep thinking that Bethesda is looking at all the cool Mods/ideas that have come out and thinking "We should have done that."

So, yea I'm let down. But I'm inspired and given hope by the Modding community. Support your local Modding community and Modders out there. Oh...and ENDORSE Mods!

  18. IMHO I think you're just trolling for an argument. No offense intended. I support your right to rant but don't care for your 'judgment' of other players style of play.

When I browse the Mods I am continually amazed at some of them. I always think, "There is no way I would play with that in my game!" But I will always be in support of art and creativity. Which happens to be the biggest selling point for me concerning the Nexus.

Just a suggestion: Rant and and be critical of the game if you must. But please don't slam me because I think it is 'cool', 'awesome' or is something I find 'relaxing'.

  19. Skyrim is single player. Isn't the whole point of Modding to adjust the game so that you can play it your way? I don't understand why I keep seeing threads that rant at everyone because they aren't playing Skyrim exactly as they are. Individualism is the conerstone of Human Society and cultural constructs. Without it we all become just one single drone. Course...that might be a cool theme for a game.
