On my first play through (second if you count the 250 hr. PS3 version which was abandoned) I am playing a Nord that just seemed to to hit the jackpot out of nowhere. Having lived a simple life he suddenly finds himself the center of all kinds of attention and lots and lots of gold. He doesn't have a real problem with the Dragonborn thing but he is intent on playing it by ear and soaking up what he can. He is more of a Ranger than anything else and primarily sticks to that lifestyle. He rarely sleeps indoors.
I love playing an immersion style of game. I am currently at 240 hrs. on this play through and I have only been up on Hrothgar twice. I use a lot of MODs to correct some things where I feel Beth missed the mark. Face, body and user interface type MODs. These are of course personal taste and we all have different likes and dis-likes in those areas. So I wont bother listing those.
I use the following MODs that greatly enhance my immersion experience;
Better Horses
Horses for followers
Frostfall Hypothermia camping survival
Camping Lite
EDWS Enhanced Dynamic Weather System
Enhanced Night Skyrim
Followers can Relax
High Quality 3D Map
HiRes legible Road Signs
Mike Foxs Darker Nights
RIS- Real Ice and Snow
Salvage Material
Sounds of Skyrim
Total Realism- Basic Needs
W.A.T.E.R. Water and Terrain Enhancement Redux
I have run these MODs together for many hours without any compatibility or performance problems. I run an average of 60fps.
Actually I think there are more of us 'immersion' types out there than you think. We just tend to get tightly wrapped in our immersive worlds. It's always nice to converse with one as a reminder we aren't alone.
My current character likes the vigilants, perhaps he'll run into yours out there someday

@Fortunado3
Couldn't help but notice that you didn't use 10% of 1 in 10 people that make 500,000 versus 1,000,00 in the global market of most gamers of the 10 to 20 deomgraphic to validate your statements
-
Not really. Morrowind and Oblivion wasn't this dumbed down, and both were on consoles.
And these games aren't getting dumbed down because of piracy. Its because of laziness, greed, and wanting to pander to the lowest common denominator.
A realist...we are becoming a small section in the demographic picture.

That reminds me, I haven't updated my profile in ages. Wow, Civ V wasn't even out yet when I created it.
15 minutes later...
There, updated. I hope you still like me.
Ahhh...Leisure Suit Larry. I think I like you even more. We are WAY off topic now!
p.s. you only mentioned coffee four times in your profile. we almost had that in common.
gamepad is better than dualshock. Just kidding!!!
-
I didn't mean to step on your toes there. If you took it the wrong way, I apologize.
I do know precisely what the G13 is. The reason I use a PS3 controller is due to disability; my hands are seriously arthritic and most of my fingers no longer bend properly, which makes it impossible to hit more than one key at the same time. I went through a whole lot of different gamepads and gaming mice and joysticks and assorted other gaming aids when I first started heavily playing PC games, and eventually discovered that my old DualShock + Xpadder work far better for my needs than the more expensive options out there. Everyone uses a gamepad for their own reasons, and if you find the G13 is best for what you want out of it, good for you. I have nothing against it.
My only issue is that when I read your post, you seemed very determined to sell people on the expensive G13 as if it were somehow able to make dealing with the Toggle Always Run bug easier. It doesn't. The only way to correct the bug once it occurs is to hit whatever key or button you have assigned to Toggle Always Run. For standard keyboard + mouse gamers, by default it's the Caps Lock key. All you need to do is hit that key. Not exactly a big deal when your hands are already right there on the keyboard. The bug isn't frustrating because it's annoying to correct; it's frustrating because it happens, period, and when it happens it tends to disrupt your gameplay. Correcting it is simple. Avoiding it ... is impossible.
What makes the bug so damned annoying is that when it first happens, it'll either slow your character in mid-stride or speed you up unexpectedly. There's always going to be an instant when you realize the toggle's been switched, and that instant is sometimes when you've just committed to an action only to find your character didn't react as expected. Once it's already happened, correcting it is as simple as hitting Caps Lock or whatever button is applicable, but it's too late to prevent that instant from occuring. The damage is already done as soon as your character starts moving unexpectedly slowly or quickly, usually at the most annoying moment possible. No gamepad or controller or any other thing will ever eliminate that aggravating instant. So in that regard there's absolutely no point in spending money on a G13 that can't fix the issue the same way a DualShock can't fix it.
That's all I meant to say.
I completely concur with your assesment of the run/walk issue. And I say once again I never stated it fixed or eliminated it. I only suggested the G13 as a better method (quicker) than using the keyboard to get you back to previous setting.
I am not 'pushing' the gamepad on anyone. But when the OP stated that the user interface sucks I felt maybe the poster wasn't aware of options. And I said that my suggestion wasn't for everyone because it cost you extra. In fact...A suggestion that the PS3 controller is a good optioin is in fact a very good suggestion. I happen to like the PS3 controller quite a bit. The G13 is simply my preference.
I accept your apology  In fact I read your profile, I think I even like you. So no hard feelings here.
-
Using a gamepad or any other controller doesn't fix the problem. As I stated, I use a DualShock (which was free with my PS3, incidentally) and it makes no difference. My keymapping software, XPadder, can do all the same keysets, macros, toggles etc as any gamepad on the market -- and a great deal more. But the issue still remains that no matter which keys\buttons you assign for movement, the game continues to arbitrarily do the equivalent of pressing the Toggle Always Run key whenever it chooses to. Once it's decided to go into Always Run mode all by itself, you will find yourself running whenever you move until you physically press the actual Toggle Always Run key\button to switch it back. That's what makes it so maddening.
A. I didn't say it would fix the problem, I said it is a work around (look up the word circumvent).
B. It sounds like you don't know what a G13 gamepad is, IMHO.
C. And for the record, I have six dual shock six-axis controllers. ( I know what their capabilities are.)
D. I concur with your stance on no one telling you their game controller method is better than yours. But don't you think you think you should afford the same respect to others? (especially since you weren't even the OP and advice wasn't even directed at/to you?)
E. If you feel the need to flame someone for making a suggestion you don't like perhaps you should consider starting your own topic. That way you can ask for advice and then slam people for giving it. Unless you don't need advice due to your expertise.

Let me just say this;
Absolutely nothing wrong with the money part. Without it we wouldn't have the gaming industry that we have today, or tomorrow for that matter.
But in my earlier comment I stated that it is the money influence that most likely brought Steam into the picture. Which is what the OP asked. If the console was the way Bethesda wanted to go because it would be more popular (ie more money) then it naturally leads to Steam because it is easier to manage. Nothing wrong with that. But it is still money that controls the influence. Hell it influences everything! Isn't that why you got up and went to work today?
I don't like Steam due to certain procedural policies they practice. I do however like Bethesda. What we as PC gamers need to do is promote the advantages of playing on a PC to everyone we know. Then hopefully the influence will swing our way.
I also think most people would agree that in todays market it seems that no amount of profit is enough. We see it in all facets of the economy. As more people are becomimg aware of this it is creating a seething anger in society against industry. And the politicians use it to get into office.
My point is; If you stand to make more millions than you can possibly spend (not a bad thing)shouldn't you as an industry consider all of your customers? I think they could have done a better service to PC customers than just porting it over (a very general description, don't flame me). And I don't even know if that is what they did. Just going by what I have heard a lot of programmers in the field have stated.
The nutshell (my opinion)
Did Steam influence the PC quality of Skyrim? Most likely Yes. Was it because they saw a better market in the consoles? Maybe, don't know for sure. Was it a 'whack at PC users? Very doubtful.

I used this guide. it is very good http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide?sf2686171=1/

Can't help you here...I have no idea. But could you tell me what follower MODS you used? Perhaps I could step over that trip wire myself.
-
I think when you consider the fact that they went with Steam at all puts that in the realm of plausability. I personally am convinced that they did it for the love of money. As if they didn't stand to make more than they could ever spend anyway. But I still love the game. Just wish Steam would go away!

Hey OP! Two months later and your thread is still alive. Just thought I'd add my story here since I believe it applies well to the topic.
Quick background:
I have been into RPG forever. Was a Dungeon Master back in the AD&D days. So when Skyrim came out I knew I would have to have it. I bought PS3's three years ago for my entertainment systems to play blu-rays. I let my Pc's lapse in the upgrade arena and began to buy my games on the PS3 platform. So...yes I bought Skyrim for the PS3 :wallbash: We all know how that went. End of background.
So after my really bad PS3 episode I decided to upgrade my PC so I could play Skyrim in all it's glory at Ultra High. I ordered all my equipment and began the wait for it's eventual arrival. :whistling:
Now here is where it gets to the topic. I had never before added a MOD to any PC game I have played. Since I had idle time due to waiting for my equipment to arrive I decided to do some research. I realized right away I had been missing out on some really great stuff!
I discovered there were two resources for these MODS, NEXUS and Steam. Which one to use? I had never used any MODS and knew next to nothing about them. So I began to exam each resource closely without bias.
Steam had obvious ease of use. I immediately found this to be attractive since I was a noob at this MOD thing. They even promised to keep it 'organized' for me. This made me skeptical. I am a tech and I know that to be a big promise that is near impossible to support. I also discovered Steam was new to the MOD scene. They also didn't seem to have a knowledgeable community connected to them. I have always found that to be a very helpful resource in the gaming world.
NEXUS didn't seem to be as user freindly. But it was very obvious they had been around for awhile. They did have a manager (NMM) that was/is in beta that offered to manage my MODS for me. I was curious why this was in beta even tho NEXUS had been around for so long. I discovered that the NEXUS community had always been installing/uninstalling MODS manually....always. And that most still do. To me this indicated that there were a lot of very knowledgeable people in the NEXUS community in regards to MODS and MODDING.
Trying to decide which way to go I noticed a glaring difference between Steam and NEXUS. Steam was restricting content on their site. Don't get me wrong here, I am not advocating porn in games. But I do advocate freedom of choice. I don't believe in restricting creativity in a person. If you do the world ends up flat.
As it turns out that was the deciding factor for me, a noob in the world of MODS. Wondering how it all turned out?
Currently running:
49 MODS (and counting)
NMM
SKSE
Script Dragon
BOSS
Wyre Bash
FRAPS
NEXUS Community
Thanks to all the above my game runs flawlessly and is the most unique RPG experience I've ever had.
In the the long run NEXUS will still be here. After the lure of false promises and money people will still be looking for what only the NEXUS has to offer right now and in the future....an experienced and knowledgeable community.

I've read all kinds of complaints and problems by others about Skyrim, especially concerning the PC user interface (which sucks like nothing has ever sucked in this world), and I've shared most of those problems. But I've not seen anyone mention "Toggle Always Run." In my game, the computer frequently switches on its own between run = W and run = Shift + W (I prefer run = Shift + W). Enter a new room, it switches. Go to a cutscene crtical kill during combat, it switches. Talk to somebody, it switches. Loot a body, same thing. This is literally getting me killed since I'll come out of a cutscene or enter a room needing to run only to find that I'm now walking and I have to hit caps lock to switch back. Very little margin for error in this game during combat which is fine but only so long as the game itself isn't sabotaging your efforts.
I'm asking about this because, since no one else has mentioned it, I'm wondering if the problem is specific to my set up. For me, this is really taking all the fun out of the game.
Got the same exact problem you described. I have no idea what is the root cause of this problem. I am not sure if my solution will work for you (or any of the other responded posters) as it will require you to spend some money.
I have a Logitech G13 Gamepad. With it I am able to program any keysets, macros, multi-keys and toggles I desire. I just use toggles and multi-keys to circumvent the problem. The problem still exist I just don't notice it.
I HIGHLY recommend the Gamepad to anyone out there playing games on a PC. It will forever change the quality of your experience. Unfortunately this solution will hit you in the wallet.
p.s. If you get one with a LCD you can use it in conjunction with FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) to monitor your FPS, take movies and screen shots with zero performance hit! Yes, zero.

Going to copy my post from a thread in the Bethsoft forums from awhile back, it pretty much covers what i do.
" Here's what i do pretty much.
Walk in towns and on main roads. only sprint for short distances when need to, run when in fights.
Eat, drink, sleep. i do use the more complex needs mod on the nexus so it goes into great detail.
I use Hypothermia mod. really nice immersion there too. ( i also use timescale 5 )
Read every book and stack book shelves.
Do not use every skill, i limit myself to the certain build/roleplay. for instance i'm currently roleplaying an Altmer pure mage that came from Morrowind. i do not use smithing at all because it's out of my abilities and such. same goes with weapons and armor, i do not use them at all.
Actually immerse into the conversations in the game, i do not skip the convo for any reason ( even to sell items )
i be sure to get my exercise by running around towns or holds for 10 minutes. i also challenge myself to walk from Solitude to Riften at least once a week.
Pick every plant and flower to mess around with alchemy to learn new things for my craft, same goes with enchanting.
I never join every faction/guild, i only limit myself to the player. since i'm a pure mage, i started out in the Mages College ( i use the "Live another Life mod ) he does not know how he feels about the Dark brotherhood though, been getting dark feelings so i think deep down he knows he loves Sithis.
You can also choose a religion so to speak, by picking a god or lord to worship if you so choose, or if you decide to be an atheist and do not believe in them or hate them for past reasons in your back story?
If you do choose to worship somebody, be sure to visit the shrines and temples atleast once a week or however many times you would like.
If you feel bad for the poor, toss em a few septims. or food/drinks.
Use a realistic lighting mod, for instance, brighter days and darker nights/caves/dungeons etc...actually makes sense to use torches/candle light spells etc. plus it looks awesome!
I never fast travel either.
I disabled health regeneration too.
Actually for the fast travel and health regen i use a program called "Automatic Batch File Execution - ZAutoExec by Kvalyr" which can be found on the Nexus.
What this does is starts a console command on startup of a save file. so therefore when i load my game, it disables health regen and fast travel ( can also be used for TONS of other things too )
Use the Immersive HUD mod, i use it and love it, the way i use mine has everything disabled and love it so much!
Use the Water FX mod which adds water effects when you get wet.
Use the Killable children mod ( a huge immersion breaker to have dragons kill entire towns and leave a stupid kid alive ) or can sacrifice children to Sithis, as a type of roleplay
Try to roleplay as a vampire/werewolf, that is if you plan on getting turned.
You could also play 'Dead is Dead' it's pretty fun to do.
Now this next part may not be for you but i do the following also.
Master difficulty 24/7
uncapped levels and skill levels ( no more 81 and 100 caps )
Deadly Dragons maxed settings
PISE ( most settings )
Deadlier traps
Wars in Skyrim
WARZONES
A few ' sounds of Skyrim : ******* mods <--i used **** because there are a few, simply adds more sounds to the game, more immersion feel too!
use the Dragon remains mod on the nexus. this stops dragons from turning into skeletons after you kill them. makes sense too. i love it!
There's a TON of things you can do to immerse yourself and roleplay!
P.S. i only listed some of the main mods i use. i actually have over 100. and they all work perfect together.
P.P.S for more immersion with the hypothermia mod, i would use the better snow/dynamic snow mods, and get the more snow mod too! i use the 150% esp on it. makes blizzards so fun and realistic!
Oh and to mix with the snow stuff i said, get the heavy rain mod too. it looks much better. and the Immersive Skryim Thunder mod ( can find it on the Nexus, same as all these i have said ) "
I knew that I wasn't the only person that played this way! I always feel that so many players are missing out on all the adventure and beauty that Skyrim has to offer.
p.s. our only difference: I use the better horses and horses for followers. They walk everywhere of course. But I wish that I had to feed and properly care for them. If anyone knows of a MOD that does that let me know. (Thanx for the more snow MOD tip. Looks like blizzards on the radar tonight  )

Static. However I love the realism it would add....but playability (FPS) must remain priority one.

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a heads up that the Beta, or pre-release version of SKSE is working just fine for me with the new Skyrim update 1.4.27. I have put a couple of hours on the update while using the latest SKSE Link to silvercloak.org and did a lot of checking. All mods including Sky UI are working for me and I have experienced no problems with any of my mods. Simply installed the SKSE 1.4.13 and launched SKSE via NMM.
MONGO like good news!

Just because we're playing a game doesn't mean that our real world morals go away. A few posters in this thread mentioned the 'anti-hero'. For the the most part I agree, imho, that the character Bethesda meant to portray in Skyrim is the anti-hero type. That being said...
In human society we allow our heroes, warriors or whatever you want to label them to shed the chains of morality to serve the common good. Even religious factions use soldiers to 'serve' their deity!
I like that there isn't a strict moral quest line, it's a role playing game! Play your character as you see her. If it bothers you to kill people as a Dragonborn...then don't do it. I think it's cool that you have created a character history. Go one step further and develop a philosophy for her as well. And play the game based on that philosophy.
I guess what I am trying to say is "Don't expect the game to make moral decisions for you. In fact you should be happy it doesn't." I currently have plans to play through the game many times. Each play-thru will be vastly different. From a sword swinging killer to a cabbage picking farmer.
Because I can...

If it's the terrain you want to see I suggest a visit to the cascades or olympic ranges in the northwest. I swear they used them for inspiration. As far as living in the world of skyrim....no that would be a very tough survival challenge. Think I'll just stay next to the woodstove in my easychair and visit skyrim through my pc. :armscrossed:

I wouldn't touch an ATI card with a ten foot pole. All good developers are doing so with nvidia in mind and you will likely have all sorts of issues with ATI. Skyrim specificly runs best on nvidia and ENB can have issues with ATI. I also wouldn't waste time with SLI or multiple cards unless you are buying top of the line cards. The benifits you gain from paying double price from two good cards will not be greater than paying for a top of the line card.
Also, EVGA is where it's at.
EVGA!!!
Long story short...Was where you are now. Did a lot of research and everthing said the GTX 560 was THE card. Went with the advice and ordered it. I got screwed because the company (to remain un-named) dropped shipped from an un-authorized seller. Card was faulty and EVGA was not required to honor the warranty! EVGA reviewed it after one contact and decided they would honor the warranty even tho they weren't required to! Best support people I have ever dealt with!
And the card performance? You might be able to beat it but it will cost you a lot of money!

Bravo to all the posters in this topic. I have logged 250 hrs in skyrim so far. Some of the tips I learned the hard way but many I didn't know. Thanx to all again. I hope there will be many more added. Here's my 2 cents;
--If you feel the need to fight a battle without your follower getting in the way you cannot give them the cammand to 'wait here' and expect them to wait 'there' and not participate in the fight (even through a door!). I guess it's that sworn to protect me thing.
--Followers have a tendency to want to wear the type of armor/weapons they are originally equipped with (ie... light vs heavy) even if it has a lesser rating. Upgrading or enchanting it will get them to equip it.
--Store loot (once you have a house to do so) in containers instead of selling it. Sell it only when you need to convert it to cash. Benefits are: 1.Can sell at a higher profit later in game. 2. You may wish to use item in different manner later in game 3. You can always convert into cash if needed but is much more costly to convert cash into retail item.

as time goes on there is a coruse towards oversimplifying and dumbing down the process of installing mods.
while it has opened the doors for more modders as did gaming open its doors for more when they mainstreamed...
however since modders and the consumers of mods are lock in step the less complex and knoweldgeable the consumer of a mod becomes so too will the creator if they even bother to stick around.
so with the advent of the steam integration which removes direct access to patches and files and now mods we will lose the people who deliver elegant and diverse mods over time and gain more popular ideas of mods.
if I take a look under the hood of morrowind, oblivion and now skyrim I see an advancement of visuals (mainstream) and a decrease in complexity and organization and breadth of the code.
actually opening the ck and then skyrim.esm I think this is 5 years of code?? seriously... not really inspiring for the future. the main quest can be read in less than a day (all variations of it)
this is directly related to the focus on tes titles going towards mainstream and not the alternative guy or gal who sat through arena and daggerfall and found it utterly fascinating even with its hideous visuals
so what I am trying to say is learn how to manually install things. read readmes. ask questions and understand your computer. the more time a modder has to spend figuring out how to deliver a dummy proof mod the less time they can spend roaming the expanse of imagination and brilliance.
just sayin....
I know that i'm comparing apples to oranges here...(for the record, I agree with you in general)
In the early seventies most people had the same view concerning calculators vs slide rulers. The general thought then was that deep thought and creativity would vanish. In fact just the opposite was true.
It is very difficult to predict where new techonology and methodology will take us in the future.

Just thought I'd share a hello to all the Nexus members.
Short on who I am;
I've been playing RPG's since before there were computers back in the day when TSR ruled. I have watched the evolution of this type of gaming turn into something wonderful and amazing. I am most impressed with the modders out there. I chose to pursue a technical career in electronics and computers many years ago. I have been waiting for SKYRIM for all of my life it seems.
I have lurked and scoured many forums looking for one that has a community that I find informative, intelligent and dedicated to gaming. I am very happy to say that I have found that community in the Nexus. I am looking forward to our relationship.

How many hours have you played?
in Skyrim LE
