The DLC isn't making you do anything... If you don't like the idea of building a home and having a family, don't buy it. Beth are simply giving the player the option of implimenting something very different and new to their games should they so choose to. If it's too Sim like, dont' go for it. Easy!
^This.
Don't like it, don't buy it. And let those who like it buy and play in peace.

When I saw the DLC description, I thought it was going to be something close to Build your Own House... But it isn't.
This adds a LOT of immersion to the game. If your character has a "do yourself" personality, this DLC fits greatly.
People hate Bethesda, people blame Bethesda, but they've made a great game, tried to solve a lot of bugs, and is now giving us two great DLCs. I loved the idea of building the house in a Minecraft-ish way, and, from baking bread to adopting a nice and cute daughter or son, I loved it.
Still, I hope that Bethesda suprises us with a third DLC that adds something greater than Dawnguard. Skyrim can still be expanded a lot.
I didn't read many of the negativ comments but i could say many of them are reasonable. Yeah, they should patch the game first. I just reinstalled it because the patches messed up my Script Extender and it always told me "install newest version" and shuted down. I never had such problems, well at least not as bad, with Oblivion, F03 or NV. They should patch the game FIRST. And i don't care who steals ideas from whom, every of these ideas is in the room since Oblivion or even Morrowind.
Also, the Idea of founding a family and build a house are some kind of strange to me. Is this Sims? Is this Sims or what? Founding a virtual family? Realy, who needs that? Don't you have a real family? Well, thats the age of Facebook. The sells will show who needs that.
I mean, besides that its great what they showed again they could make possible. Now the Dragonborn Superslayer finaly can bake some bread by his own. Nice graphics and animations, but for me its still feals like a time wasting simulation.
I can go out and fish in the real world and if i catch something the Dopamin my brain releases is the same. And its real. I think thats the main idea behind games/mods like this, Dopamin. Give the player a task, even its just open a chest, and your brain rewards you with dopamin for progess, or at least feeled progress.
You know what, i go hunting tomorrow. Thinking about this sets me in the mood for doing something real.
Well, for roleplayers like me, founding a faimly and building a house is a nice experience and makes your character more... real (Of course, a blood-thirsty assasin probably wouldn't adopt childs, unless he wants some disciples on the art of killing).
And, unfortunately, not all people like to do things on real life, because even if virtual things are nice, we aren't virtual, we have family, friends, etc. Unfortunately, there aren't dragons to slay and Elder Scrolls to fetch. :P

The way I see it, in such a magically-saturated reality most cultures would have no real need for technology to advance as fast as it has done in the real world. the Dwemer are a big exception, since their near abandonment of magicka and gods was because of their cultural beliefs, whereas most, if not all "people" in Tamriel believe in magicka, Daedra and Aedra. Unlike the real world, however, these elements actually have physical power, they can be used in place of advanced technology. And they don't need to be smart to use some of it either, anyone can swing an enchanted sword and set someone alight. :3
So... Guns like a musket would fit Elder Scrolls if they are Dwemer-made.
-
Muskets DONT belong in skyrim! i certainly do not remember studying the medieval era and reading anything about guns! the only projectiles were bows, catapults, and in legend... Magic! Crossbows came in the renaissance era just after the medieval era, A musket is too modern for skyrim, they didn't have long ranged guns back in those two eras, i believe they had a pistol but not long ranged! guns would be too overpowered anyways in skyrim, They're more powerful that swords and go farther than arrows!
actually crossbows were invented and in use before the 100 years war and longbows came after crossbows and the first bow you get in skyrim is longbow (in real life longbows shoot farther and are more powerful than crossbows of the medieval time period) the renaissance began just a little bit after the 100 years war and in Italy it was already going on during the 100 years war.
They had hand cannons in the early 1300's in spain, and the huns actualy had handheld black powder guns and grenade like bombs back in the 11 and 1200's which is long before the renaissance.
Matchlock muskets started being developed in the late 1300's and became more prominant in the 1400's and then not soon after the flintlock muskets that we all know and love were developed in use.
And if you think Skyrim is a medieval game you are horribly mistaken. As I posted already, The only thing medieval about skyrim is the steel, iron, hide, leather, and fur weapons and armors. Everything else about the game is completely renaissance and fantasy. All the architecture still in use (meaning not ruins), excluding markarth, are all renaissance. If you look at common housing, clothing, trade, standard of living, books, utensils, etc. of the medieval period you'll find that almost none of it is in skyrim! Almost everything about skyrim is renaissance. The fact that there is an abundance of books, everyone seems to know how to read and write, the clothes, forks, knives spoons, the architecture, the standard of living, deff the trade system with standardised curency are all renaissance!
Now please do some research, or at least read what posted!!!!, before spouting your ignorance!
ps: do you really think they're gonna teach you everything about the thousand year time period of the middle ages in a high school or middle school history class...? I don't think so... in fact I know they won't and didn't!
Also, even if Tamriel's races doesn't have a musket, the dwemer could have a weapon like that! There's even a mod called "Dwemer Rifle", that adds a gun similar to those old pistols, and it is perfect possible to the Elder Scrolls lore. Also, it wouldn't be THAT overpowered. Muskets take time to reload, they have a slow rate of fire, and they aren't even THAT powerful. You could survive a musket shoot if you had a decent steel/dwemer/daedric/glass/steel plate/dragonbone armor.

Giving a backstory and a quest for Cerwiden would help people like me who roleplay in Skyrim.
Even if I love that mod, she still looks like a "stranger" to the world 'cause, you know... You just go to the Sleeping Giant Inn, and "Follow me, I need your help", and Cerwiden doesn't even say something like "Are you... the Dragonborn? Lord Denblas/Donblas (I forgot his name) has sent me to assist you on yadda yadda yadda...".
The other aspects of Cerwiden can be improved later. But, after a backstory, making the custom voice of the other dialogue options would be a nice idea...

I would recomend that you play the game without mods, and after discovering points of the game that you would like to improve, you could start to download some mods.
There are a lot of mods, but for a beginner, some aesthetical/minimal changes would do.
Unofficial Skyrim Patch
SkyUI
A Quality World Map
Skyrim HD - 2K Textures (If you can run it)
ApachiiSkyHair (Yes, this mod has a lot of beautiful but lore-friendly hair for males and females)
UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul (This mod is an exception for the rule of "minimal changes". It improves the follower system a LOT and it is a MUST HAVE)
WATER - Water And Terrain Enhancement Redux
Static Mesh Improvement
Skyrim Flora Overhaul
Realistic Lighting With Customization (This one has two options: a hardcore lighting experience [Very dark at night, blizzards destroy your visibility, etc] and a more friendly experience, that only improves the appearance of the lights, without making the game harder or easier)
XCE - Xenius Character Enhancement (This improves the look of your character and the look of the NPCs while staying faithful to the vanilla look. It includes: Better facial textures, better eyes, etc)
And if you don't like the Realistic Lighting with Customization, there is the:
Project Reality - Climates Of Tamriel (Project Nevada is the "rival" of Project Reality [There's a Project Reality for Falllout])
Most of these only improves the graphics, because, for a beginner, mods that alter more fundamental aspects of the game aren't recommended.

Level 36-45 is the sweet spot after which the vanilla game at least will become too easy and boring. I have never tried a completionist run of Skyrim. It is a terrifying prospect. If I were to try it, say when the final DLC i out, I would definitely use the uncapper to lower the rate at which skills advance in order to make there be a reason to keep going.
I agree that around mid 30s(levels; don't know about years) to 50s is a great spot, to keep the game semi-challenging. Most high level dungeons are built for those levels.
In my current character(level 37, I think), I reduced the level xp from smithing, enchanting and alchemy to zero, because you can easily miss a lot of levels just by trying to craft potions with the desired effects etc. I must say it makes it much more enjoyable, at least as long as I keep the difficulty up.
The most I had with uncappers is level 85-90 character and the game just couldn't find anything for someone that high. Now I don't wont bandits, thieves and other fodder to become gods, but the game would benefit for unique high level (near impossibru) difficulty bosses/encounters/dungeons. It would also add to the re-playability. If only the final boss require you to level up enough just to stand a chance. I would have enjoyed the fight much more.
.....Detracting mode off
Alduin was so easy. The battle was epic, but it didn't lasted long. With a character at level 25, it was fairly easy. To fight the WORLD-EATER, at least you should be at... what, 40+?

Pretty much. Do they even care, or have the skill to go through the MQ? Does it even interest them, etc.?
I think that is the real ES role playing. Where pretty much every one of your builds is NPC like, except for one true protagonist.
Yeah, you need to really get into the mind of your character. And, to roleplay, you need to learn how to roleplay someone who isn't too much important to the world.
For example, in Oblivion, I created a character (A Khajiit thief, I don't remember his name anymore), and even if I wasn't truly roleplaying him, I had the notion that I can have fun without doing the Main Quest.
-
I can understand that, but let me show you another example: You play the good guy and during the main questline you are forced to kill an innocent blind guy becaus Hermaeus Mora won't let you leave the dungeon even if you refused his offer - hint: this is where you get the elder scroll. (Highlight for spoilers) What do you do then? "Cheat", reload and abandon the entire main questline? Skyrim isn't really the best example for a good RPG where you decide what is right and wrong.
Er, you dont have to kill anybody to get the Scroll for the mainquest. Not to mention plenty RPs dont even go through the MQ.
^ This. Does my blood-thirsty assasin really need to want to save the world, or does my humble and poor alchemist have the strength to even walk to High Hrothgar?
You can just simply ignore Septimus and go to the Troat of the World without even talking to Septimus again. Even if that, in roleplaying terms, wouldn't fit if your character has a good-hearted personality.

I really loved the idea of the mod, (It makes me remember of OOO [The famous Oscuro's Overhaul mod for Oblivion]) but, I have a lot of mods, and some change things related to perks and etc. So I'm first going to end playing with my character, and then do the boring process of uninstalling mods, cleaning the game and making Skyrim become vanilla again.
But, something I would love to see is a mix between leveled and static systems. For example.
Wolves are level one when you are level one. They are level 5 when you are level 5. But when you are level 10, they will be still at level 10.
I don't think you are going to make this, and when your mod get out of the beta phase, I'll give it a try because I still love that feeling of going to a small looking bandit camp and find a big group of badass and fatal marauders, or get a beautiful ebony dagger at the corpse of that stupid low-skilled necromancer.

Dead is dead is not for everyone, I will just warn you - you are really sad, when you loose a character, you got attached to. I tried it first with rules like "well, I can die 3 times" or so - that does not work, you will not stick to this. Just a drastical "dead is dead" works, but it will possibly make you sad and angry about yourself and your carelessness. It is hard to stick to this rule - that is why I tricked myself out and created this "graveyard" folder with the last save game of the dead character, so that I could possibly play this character again (even I know, I won't, because the attachment to this character gets lost fast, when you start playing a new one).
So... Yeah, I'll stick with the "Dead is Alive" gameplay style :P That is, until I feel I am really good so my characters doesn't die at the beggining of the game just because of a idiot error of mine.
-
Ok, that is again something where our game play differs.
I play a role as character. This includes, that I do not do all I am told to do. I decide seen from the perspective of my character, if something should be done and what should be avoided. Just to give an example. I think, that a proud, honorable and patriotic Nord will neither join the thieves guild nor the dark brotherhood. This is in contradiction to his mind set to me, so I won't do these quest lines with this character. And because I have to fear permanent death, I think twice about if and how I do a certain task. My goal is to stay alive and make it nevertheless to higher levels. But this includes as well, that I don't do too risky stuff, just because I am told to. I decide carefully, what I do and what is better to be left alone.
Sometimes, even in real life, you are forced to do something you would not want to do. But you can still chose a lot of things in Skyrim. It is still a good example for a good RPG where you decide what is right and wrong.
Also, people have different ways to play AND different ways to HAVE FUN. You are entitled to your own opinion.
I don't play Dead is Dead, but I still try to roleplay. I rarely load for "Making a mistake", but I don't want to let my character die because of my lack of ability. I'm even thinking of playing Dead is Dead, but I'm still making my gameplay more hardcore. I add hardcore elements to my roleplay bit by bit.
If you find cheating fun, if you find hardcore roleplaying fun, good, play the way you like. And nobody has the right to say that you're playing wrong because you play the game the way you want.

Dragon Break = Any break on the time continuity. A time travel would be ONE of the types of Dragon Breaks.
A Dragon Break could be the union of many alternate realities in one. A Dragon Break can be a lot of time breaking events.
That is not exactly true.
A dragon break is an event where time becomes non-linear.
Traveling back in time =/= a Dragonbreak because time has not stopped being linear.
Furthermore the merging of many alternate timelines into one is what happens AFTER a dragon break, and is caused by the Jills, it does not constitute a dragon break itself.
Oh, then I was wrong. Thank you for correcting me!
-
You should add another option to the poll:
- Don't make them short!
Seriously not going to waste my time on a dunmer with different stats .. Seriously.. how boring would that be? I wouldnt bother
Well, with some alterations here and there, you can make a Dwemer look different from a Dark Elf.
For example, making the ears a little bigger (So they don't look like a dark elf, I don't know if this is lore-friendly or not, but, damn it), and making the Dwemer short but not TOO short (A size equal to Breton would be enough), different hairstyles, different beard, different looking eyes, and you're done.

...Well, I like to say that the two sides have faults, but the Empire is still better than the Stormcloaks.
Ulfric is a racist. He doesn't care about "True nord pride, I'm a dumb warrior and I will die doing horseapples for my country", he WON'T destroy the Thalmor alone, and if he could, maybe he would even join up with the Thalmor.
That's something I love on that game. Bethesda made the two factions look bad and good at the same time, and each one is almost similar. But, the Empire unified Tamriel, and as far as I know, there were times of peace with the Empire. Also, some people go and whine: "But those damn idiot Imperials don't do nothing about the Thalmor, they are a bunch of cowards, Stormcloaks are brave, yadda yadda yadda" ; There is only ONE faction that is truly bad in this Civil War: The Thalmor. They want to see the Empire falling apart. Without Skyrim, the Empire might not have even a chance to rebel. Without the Empire, the Ulfric's guerrilla won't stand a chance against the Talmor.
The Empire doesn't show signals of rebellion against the Thalmor, but it doesn't show submission for the Thalmor either.
And, man, I hate the Thalmor, I hate the Thalmor even more than that Mystic Dawn from Oblivion. They represent everything that is bad on the Altmer culture: This belief that they are superior to all other races. And unfortunately, they aren't the first to think that way.
Now, I'm anxious for the next game. I really want to cut at half and paint my sword with blood from those stupid Thalmor.
-
Well, at least Bethesda tried to make that "important man" thing. And there's no problem or shame on being the most important man/woman of Skyrim because you won't be forced to be High King of Skyrim even if you did a LOT of great things.
-
unrealistic... "Smoothy faces".
I agree with most of that, except I do run a facial smoother just to remove some of the distracting angles from the rendering. It works on the NPCs too, though. One of my favorites was a cute skinny little Breton chick with Volendrung, just to accentuate the size discrepancy. Also clothes to smooth out the body disproportion.
Well, there is a limit between a realistic smooth face (There ARE beautiful woman in Skyrim, and female warriors can still maintain a good appearance) and a Barbie doll smooth face. So, "Smoothy faces" doesn't apply to your case :D
-
A Dragon Break would solve the problem, but if a Dragon Break doesn't happen, IMO, the Empire has more chances to win the Civil War than the Stormcloaks. Well, at least, the number of Imperial soldiers, as far as I know, is higher than the Stormcloaks AND Imperial soldiers probably are more well-trained than the Stormcloaks.
But the Stormcloaks have a chance of winning if they start to make nice strategies, pulling the strings here and there, but Ulfric won't do that. He's a dumber version of Hitler.
-
Mostly, I play with female characters. Females because I just... I just love to see a girl smashing a bunch of frost trolls and being badass and sexy/beautiful at the same time (But, of course, when I mean "sexy/beautiful", I mean REALISTIC/LORE FRIENDLY sexyness/beauty, not a bunch of unrealistic "armors that aren't armors at all", "Barbie dolls" and "Smoothy faces". But, if you like something unrealistic/unlorefriendly, you are entitled to your own opinion).
I still play with male characters, but I like to make them two-handed tanks or heavy battlemages.

So, I'm tired of stalking the forum and only using the Nexus, so I've decided to create a account here.
So, hi! Morrowind made me start to love TES, and Skyrim made me find the Nexus. I'm not good at modding, but I do love to download A LOT of mods (Even if my laptop can barely handle them. 8 FPS is still playable, at least for me)
Instead of writing a long and boring description about me, I'll write some words about me:
-Newbie artist (Drawing)
-JRPG addict
-Brony
-Brazilian
-Student
-13 years
And, forgive my horrible english.

Elf Face mod?
in Mod Ideas
Posted · Edited by DanTR
Well, I know a good mod that improves the face of the 3 elven races from the game.
It's called Ethereal Elven Overhaul. It won't make your character look like the one on hentai's screenshot, but it is a huge improvement.
