  1. I didn't watch any videos on SKyrim this time around, because I suspected they'd do the same thing they did with Oblivion. Show us all these amazing features and promises, then rip them out of the final game.
  2. If I said Metal Gear Solid was better than Big Rigs or ET, how exactly would I be wrong?

A lot of people still enjoyed MW3, despite the BF3-fanboys telling them they're idiots.

A lot of people still enjoyed BF3, despite it not selling anywhere near as good as MW3.

It's safe to say that the fans' overall opinion on both games were that they were pretty good games. Therefor once cannot rightly say that either game is better than the other, considering that they cater to different audiences, and those audiences were pretty pleased with the games.

On another note, just the other day I asked one of my more casual gaming friends why he chooses to play MW3 multiplayer over BF3 multiplayer, despite owning both titles. His response was that CoD was a lot easier to get into, and he didn't want to come home after a long day at the office and play something as complex as BF3, because he simply does not relax when he plays more complex games, due to the fact that they require more attention and concentration to play properly.

Think of that what you will, but the man's got a point. I never really relaxed while play Bad Company 2 either. I was always tense and so busy concentrating on everything that's going on that it became more of a job to play than a method of relaxation. After long sessions of playing I'd sometimes feel rather exhausted.

  3. Yeah, I had lots of fun with it and spent about 120 hours on the game, but it's not exactly freeform like Fallout. I'd say it's more like Borderlands with zombies and a really amazing, gritty, in-your-face melee system. You get placed on different maps where you can complete various missions at will in the order you want.
  4. Ah, great ideas-- thanks, all! We thought we were going to get a male, and wound up bringing home two females-- still not sure how I got persuaded into that. :) But it also means I can use multiple good names, so thanks.

I'm actually relieved you got two rats instead of one. Rats make wonderful pets, but it's generally very ill-advised, and somewhat cruel, to keep a single rat. They're very sociable, and while they'll eventually love spending time with you, nothing can replace the companionship of another rat friend.

I've been keeping rats for just over 2 years now, and I absolutely love them. Don't know what I'd do without my rats. They're the most underrated pets in the world. :P

I'm not exactly an expert on rats, but I've had my fair share of experience with them so far, having been through a few already (once bought a baby rat from a shady petshop, and turned out that she had some disease which then killed not only her but infected my two others as well, killing all three :( ). I also helped out at an animal shelter which catered specifically to rats for a while. So feel free to PM me if you've got any questions, and I'll try my best to answer them. :)

Also, be sure to never bring a male rat anywhere near your females. It has disastrous consequences. One of my friends got a male and female at a petshop once and kept them in the same cage. Within three months he had more than 100 rats. Baby rats are sexually mature and ready to mate at 6 weeks, so they multiply exponentially. XD

  5. I'm not too keen on getting the Vita, to be honest. I'm scared it's going to be a repeat of the PSP where developers try to develop PS3 games for a handheld device instead of focusing on the strengths of the console.

Loco Roco and Patapon were two of the few games that actually focused on the PSP's strengths and incorporated them into the gameplay, despite being slightly more casual games.

  6. I played a demo for a game called I of the Dragon which was pretty fun. It allowed you to play a dragon in freeform scenarios, and you had to complete certain objectives.

I never found a place to buy it, but if I ever do I'm going to jump on it.

It's available on Gamersgate for $5, but I don't particularly like buying from digital distribution companies unless it's Steam.

  7. I don't think it's an issue with Crossfire, I think it's an issue with certain AMD cards in general. I'm running a Sapphire HD 6870 and using patch 1, could run the game just slightly below Ultra and only had to turn off grass. When patch 1.3 came out, my performance halved and I am now forced to play the game on a mixture of medium and high to just get it to run properly, and I still experience the occasional stuttering in busy areas.

Also running the 12.1 AMD drivers.

  8. Oh, don't get it wrong, there are lots of ways to be successful without being a douchebag. There are people running successful trade monopolies in-game, giant mining corporations, hell, a while back someone was even running a full-blown bank for players, complete with loans and everything. You don't HAVE to be bad to do good. It's just another option that the freedom of EVE gives you.

My scams usually involved buying up ships and equipment for cheap in certain sectors, then selling them to new players for inflated prices in sectors where supply is low. :P

If you also stick to the higher-sec sectors, the chances of someone ganking you are incredibly low. I don't think I've ever seen player pirates in high-sec sectors.

But it is inarguably one of the toughest MMOs to get into and stay successful in. If you're not careful, even a single mistake can see months of work come crumbling down around you. It's not everyone's cup of tea, though, because the game takes up a huge amount of your time just for you to get anywhere.

For me, just being successful in EVE is a much more satisfying accomplishment than in any other MMO, because it's so much harder to achieve.

  9. At the very least, anyone reading this thread who is considering buying the Skyrim PC disk may now think twice about what they are getting themselves into. My advice if you want to play Skyrim is to buy the digital download version, as owning the disk offers no useful advantage other than saving time on download. Big whoop if you have access to moderate high speed. At my location I can only get crappy DSL with speeds of 2 to 3 Mb, but I can still easily download 5 gigs over night. It's also quite easy to download from another location.

Or buy something else. Otherwise you will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

Well, to some it's more financially viable to buy the game at retail, because currently the exchange rate in my country means that the game costs about R100 more on Steam than buying it in-store. So there are still some advantages to buying the disk version, but essentially, yes, the disk is nothing more than a way to limit what needs to be downloaded.

Also, crappy internet connection? I'd fight 100 armed men to have a 2meg connection. :P

I've only got a 384kb/s uncapped connection, which downloads at a max of 40kb/s. I'm generally considered to be one of the lucky ones simply because I have uncapped. :O

We're considering upgrading to 1meg at home, but bandwidth prices in our country is hectically expensive.

  10. I'd say Steam is like Facebook. You get something out of it, but its not so clear what you are all giving in return.

Maybe not that drastic. I doubt Steam knows if I'm interested in men or women. :P

Or at least I hope it doesn't. :O

  11. I believe this little treasure destroys your case:

    F. Free Subscriptions.

"In some cases, Valve may offer a free Subscription to certain services, software and content. As with all Subscriptions, you are always responsible for any Internet service provider, telephone, and other connection fees that you may incur when using Steam, even when Valve offers a free Subscription."

I am sure valve is considering their service a free subscription and are not responsible for any additional bills your rack up. If you go to a gas station without a limiter on the pump and forget about it you are still responsible for the gas spilling out  . "You could always of stayed in offline mode" would have been the counter argument followed by the judges gavel hitting the table. "Case dismissed". Sorry, this seems like a lawsuit which would cost you more than the internet bill itself. You probably should have thoroughly scanned over the EULA before bringing it here, but I don't mind doing a bit of reading  .

I'm not so sure. The program is not performing the way it should, in that it updates when it's set not to, so I don't think that clause will destroy his case.

However, Valve has probably thought ahead to situations like this and there's bound to be another part of the EULA which will destroy his case.

I can try and give the OP some advice though. A while back I used a program to block Steam from downloading from certain content servers and only from the ones I specify, so in theory it might be possible to use the program to block Steam from downloading from any servers at all.

    Here's a thread on the topic;

    http://forums.webafrica.co.za/showthread.php/4606-How-to-use-the-WA-Steam-Server

I believe I used Steamwatch, but it might have been Frey's. You might just have to ask around to find out if you can block all servers though. This doesn't block the log-in server, merely the content servers from which the actual game files are downloaded.

  12. Not to such a drastic effect, but it often happens that I come across a dragon I slayed earlier and then the bones still move around a bit.

I don't think I'd be able to contain my laughter if a skeleton dropped out of the sky, though.

  13. Or we just say bai to Xbox and PS3 and buy it all on the superior platform :)

Well, I wouldn't exactly call PC the superior platform, as there are still a lot of games that I prefer to play on console, like racing games, platform games and Street Fighter type games. If anything, the PC is only technologically superior.

BUT, I do get beyond ticked off if developers allow the console's hardware restrictions to affect PC games or if they do poor porting jobs.

  14.

Social platform. Fairly valueless to me. There are plenty of websites one can 'meet up' and chat. Fan sites are not unknown. And in any case registration at such a site should be optional, just for those who wish to use the social site.

But those websites are not available to you in-game. You have to either exit your game or alt-tab. Either way, personal preference and all that.

Things being downloaded and installed without request. IMO a definite negative since it overrides owner control of the PC.

Owner control of the game, and the Steam client. Not the PC. You are still in full control of your PC, just not your game or Steam client.

Multiplayer game ? Similar to the social thing. There's no reason why one can not choose to register for that alone if desired. It's not something that has any value for me.

    Once again, personal preference.

Scratched disks ? Never been an issue, but in any case in the event one should be able to arrange a download of the disk by request and proof of purchase.

And if there are no download options available? The most likely thing to happen in this case is the developer/publisher will you to buy it from another place. I hardly believe they're going to give you the game for free if they can make more money out of you. I've had to throw away many games in the past due to them being scratched beyond repair. Some of the developers don't even exist any longer, so there isn't even anyone to contact.

Owning that game on Steam means I never have to sit with that problem again.

Sales. Not interested. If a commercial concern wishes to have a sale it need not be tied to anything else.

Gasp! Games bought on Steam sales are tied to your Steam account? Ye gads! Who would've thought?

Game saves on line. No, my data should stay on my equipment. Again no value to me.

The game saves are stored on your PC, then uploaded to the Steam cloud server. If you do not like Steam Cloud, there is an option to turn it off.

IMO growth in Steam just goes to show how large the problem is becoming.

No, growth in Steam merely proves how many users are starting to use it and how big the platform is becoming. It's not a 'problem' if more users are adopting the Steam platform.

I guess we can agree to differ but that doesn't stop me feeling I'm being manipulated into jumping through hoops I ought not be forced into. If things are voluntary then that is a different matter.

You're not being forced. Nobody is forcing you to buy games that use Steam. If you don't like Steam, buy them on console.

In any case, the points I listed was merely points about why I like using Steam and why I will continue doing so. Just because I see them as beneficial to me, and you don't, doesn't mean the points aren't valid. It means we have a difference of opinion on the Steam platform. You dislike it, I like it.

Either way, as I said previously, Steam is here to stay. It's growth is indicative of that. Either people need to start adapting, or move to greener pastures.

  15. From your post I assumed you're trying to prove that you have to go through all those steps every time you want to install a retail Steam game from the disc. Considering that the topic is about 'crippled' discs, this would make sense.

If that's not the case, then I don't know what point your post was driving at.

  16. Another issue is also that if things like Steam Workshop take off (I kinda like the idea behind it, but the implementation is draconian), developers might start forcing people to distribute mods through applications like Steam Workshop, making the free distribution of mods impossible without infringing on their copyright. But that's more an issue with Steam Workshop, and not with SOPA itself.

For this possibility alone, even though I like Steam, I oppose Steam Workshop.

  17.

    Emphasis added XD

I was nit picking your nit pick of a nit pick. See, it's like Russian dolls lol

Ah, but I did not mean that it's the game itself. It was merely a general statement on how a lot of people were playing the game, considering the amount of cosmetic mods on the site. :P

Yeah I know. But you could say that about any mod or fix because there will always be something else that breaks immersion. (Well, cause it's a game and no one is ever going to be %100 immersed.) And because other people's peeves are always silly.

And the Skyrim undies are way less brown and diapery than the Oblivion undies. This is true.

Still, bandits generally die pretty quick, right? Who cares about their non-unique bandit armor? You're too busy stabbing them in the face or roasting them alive or whatever. But afterward, during the cleanup, you have plenty of time to contemplate the philosophical ramifications of a dead man in a brown diaper, don't you?

It's like finding a dead man in Zubas. You don't really want the man to be naked, but somehow you know that if he was it would be more dignified for him and less existentially painful for you.

Moral of the story: Even the silliest of mods serves a profound human need :D

While I have to admit that the voices issue I stated earlier breaks the immersion a bit more than everyone wearing the same underwear, you do have a point. It's a lot harder to make a mod with new sentences and voice acting than changing or removing the underwear.

Which incidentally leads me to an idea for a mod this spawned that will also counter the immersion of the hideous brown undergarments. Someone can create a mod that adds a company to Skyrim that manufactures all the undergarments, only in a single style, and that has a monopoly on the undergarment industry in Skyrim.

    It will be glorious!

There will be sweatshops with Nords working like slaves to produce undergarments, and you would be able to liberate them. And there can be caravans delivering underwear to towns, which can get raided by bandits and which would explain why bandits also have underwear and....

Okay, maybe it's not such a good idea after all. :P

  18. There was a suggestion at some point in this thread that SOPA would be a threat to Nexus. I was responding to that specific issue.

Saying that it is paranoid to say that Nexus is going to be trashed by SOPA is not the same thing as condoning SOPA, or that it is not a thing to be concerned about in general, because I believe that it is. I'd find common ground with both of you, Halororor and abaris, on that. And I am certainly poking my MP about it (believe me, he is a left wing firebrand who would love to have a poke at both the Government here and the USA's attempt to rule the world in this way). But at the same time, remember what happened when they talked about getting tough on pirates over here in Britain? The ISP's decided at first they were going along with it, and then decided that they couldn't be arsed...because they would actually be cutting their own commercial throats by cutting off their customers. It's food for thought. It is my hope that in practical terms, this is what will limit SOPA in the real world.

I'm certainly the last person to trust governments on anything, the war on terror as you have already mentioned, is a very good example of creeping encroachment on civil liberties.

Ah, okay. In that case, I apologize. I misunderstood and thought that you were condoning the SOPA bill.

I doubt it would affect the Nexus, but one can't be sure down the line. It does happen from time to time that users put up copyright infringing content, so one can't be entirely sure. Just yesterday a user here was busy uploading the files for all Ceciro's dialogue. :P

  19. How can anyone enjoy having to contact a website in order to play a game they have already purchased ? I do not believe anyone relishes the prospect.

Sigh. Once again, you have to contact Steam in order to log in to Steam in online mode. You do not need to contact Steam to play the game. By your logic, you wouldn't be able to play your games without an internet connection, even though I do so often by putting my Steam in offline mode.

Steam offline mode is broken for some, yes, but that is another issue entirely. You do not NEED an internet connection to play your Steam games, only to activate and install them.

I've yet to be informed of any pros of Steam since without it one could play immediately and anything further is just additional hassle. Why would anyone want to defend being imposed upon ?

    Let's see;

-Social platform so I can talk to my friends at any time, while in-game.

-I do not have to actively go downloading patches for games from third party websites (for some this is a plus, for others not)

-I do not have to store patches on my harddrive for future use, as the updated game is stored on the Steam servers

-If one of my friends plays a multiplayer game, it is two clicks and I join him, as I can right click his name, select 'Join Game' and it instantly launches the game for me and automatically connects me to the server he is playing on, saving me the hassle of finding out which server he is playing on

-I do not have to worry about disks getting scratched or broken resulting in me having to buy the game again, as I can simply download it directly from the Steam servers.

    -Steam has frequent, wonderful sales.

-Steam Cloud, which stores my saves online for in case I lose my local saves or play on another PC

And yes, calling someone idiotic for making an unreasonable statement isn't unreasonable in itself. You can't blame me for Steam being imposed on you, simply because I do not feel the same way about it and don't mind having to use it.

Besides that, have any of you even seen how big Steam has become? They've reported a sales growth of 100% for the seventh year in a row.

    Have a look at this.

Valve’s Steamworks service for publishers and developers is also gaining plenty of traction. Steamworks provides secure DRM, cloud saving, statistical feedback and achievement support, and is now used by 400 of Steam’s 1800 games. 14.5 million Steamworks games have been shifted in the past year, 67% more than in 2010.

14.5 million Steamworks games. Meaning only games that use Steamworks, which is only about 22% of the games available on Steam. If there was 14.5 million units moved for only 22% of the total games available on Steam, how many would there have been moved in total?

PC gamer article on Steam's growth

I'm sorry to say for those who don't like Steam, but it's a behemoth and it's here to stay.

Quoting an article intended for users who are having issues installing from the disc as if all users have to use that method to install Steam retail games doesn't exactly prove a point.

You can just do what I do; pop in the disc, wait for the autorun to pop up, click install and hey! Presto!

  20. Good ideas so far. From Baldur's Gate and Diablo I remember bows with a very high fire rate. That would always make a good artifact. I like the idea of giving positive and negative effects to certain items. That would balance the whole situation and prevent overpowering.

That would actually prove very useful. It's happened on many occasions in Skyrim that I get discovered by an enemy because I couldn't draw my second arrow fast enough. :P

  21. There's not a whole not of non-nude cosmetic mods xD

For a while, there was a lot for Oblivion. I think at one point people started running out of ideas for mods for Oblivion, so everybody started making Better Faces, more Eyes, more Clothes etc mods. :P
