Join Empire or Stormcloaks? My Thoughts
MacSuibhne replied to LeddBate's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim LE
The whole conflict in Skyrim is mirrored by our own society. Most people not only would choose security (or the illusion of security) over freedom and/or privacy, they've come to expect it. We've gotten to the point where we will tolerate...maybe even welcome...repression, even persecution and violence rather than exercise personal responsibility (read "freedom") and the attendant risks and uncertainties. We'd rather stay silent and still...like a rabbit quivering in the brush...than speak the truth if there is even the slightest chance that it will offend someone who might get mad. The Empire and their agents, the Thalmor...or perhaps that should be the other way around--the Thalmor and their agents, the Empire...are roughly analogous to our own government. And it almost doesn't make any difference what government you live under. With freedom...almost by definition...comes responsibility and all the risks that determining ones own fate implies. It is not surprising that so many find the Stormcloaks to be an unsettling and to-be-avoided-at-all-costs proposition. Someone once said something to the effect that those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither and will lose both.. -
Thanks for the response. I did read the note and all the journals...I guess just not very thoroughly or at the very least I didn't retain much (not too surprising at my age) I'll go back in and see if I can find out what I missed.

Using version 1_1_4. Doing the lady in the lighthouse quest...got to the treasure room and opened the chests. Picked up everything but the dwarven dagger, the orcish sheild and the ingot. Got the note to Wulf's parents. But as i left the lighthouse, I thought to check my journal and it says that I've still got to search for traces (?) of Janna's disappearance in the treasure chest...or something to that effect. Is there something I'm missing? Is the quest bugged? How do I complete the quest?

That might be it...But Realistic Water Two 1.11 is supposed to have all the "optional patches included. Maybe I just remember looking at the Google doc that addresses the "optionals" for RWT

Well, I was hoping someone who had played Wyrmstooth would be able to quickly tell me what I needed. I have looked at almost all the mods I have installed and found nothing about needing a Wyrmstooth compatibility patch. Maybe I'm good to go, I don't know...I just remember thinking that I needed something additional for Wyrmstooth when I first started thinking about playing it --a couple of months ago. Too bad Wyrmstooth didn't mention any incompatibilities and of course the search engine at the mod site doesn't seem to offer much help.

So here is a list of mods I am running--they all seem to be playing together well-- I am wanting mostly to make the game look better and be more immersive. I am looking for a clouds mod and nightime sky mod. I am looking to make the waterfalls look better at a distance and perhaps terrain look better at a distance (BTW what is "LOD"?) I am looking for more, lusher foliage (grass and trees) and for better town and villages. I have been looking at Automatic Variants and bareback's (?) creature pack. Also intending to DL Wymstooth and Dragonborn. As well as some additional quests. Also looking at the mod that lets you go to High Hrothghar and trade Dragon Shouts for perks, etc. Some of these probably bring to mind immediate choices--such as Lush Trees and Grass, and I don't mind--but I don't want to bog down my game anymore than necessary and I don't want conflicts or clipping or strange artifacts. I've had some problems with some of the more popular mods. Installing, testing, and uninstalling gets old and doesn't leave much time for actually playing the game. So...given what I do have I would appreciate some advice as to which mods I could install without major problems to enhance my game. All thoughts and opinions would be welcome --I have read descriptions till I am blue in the face--now I need to narrow it down a bit.

Thank you for responding. I haven't been able to play much more than ten minutes or so since I posted the inquiry, but I think I have the problem resolved. Bottom line I think it was a conflict between CoT and ELFX. The interiors section of CoT wasn't playing nice with ELFX interior lighting (or vice versa). I deactivated CoT and reactivated it with the Interiors set to default (vanilla) . Anyway when a get more time, this weekend, I'll know more. Thanks again.

I recently installed this mod and i like it. I like it. Kudos to the author(s) and to the mod itself. I am not criticizing, I am looking for insights and help. I set the mod up to give me more realistic interiors--colder, more rustic, a little darker. I could have set it up to have interiors be warmer and a little brighter. But I wanted to experience the immersion. So I walk into Honeyside and it is suitably dark. But the odd thing is that as I'm walking towards the bed suddenly a square of almost white appears on the floor, and then disappears again. I realized very quickly that it is supposed to be a patch of light coming from the window. But one step in any direction and it disappears...breaking immersion. Is this something I'm just noticing now because of the interior lighting setting? Or is it a problem with my system, or a mod conflict (I use Loot), or one that I can fix...maybe by switching to warmer interiors. Or do I just have to live with it?

Thanks, that appears to have been the problem. I was so eager to make the adjustments and get them running, I didn't wait long enough. As i think on it, I seem to remember Gopher talking about that too. I watched the video twice (and parts of it four times) but it just escaped my memory.
-
So...new problem. I DL"d Tes5Edit and cleaned the update.esm. Seemed to work fine. Then I installed some new mods--the immersion mods Gopher talks about in his videos--and ran Loot again. Got another "dirty plugin," This time it was cloaks. esp--it contains 2 ITM records according to Loot. So...I don't suppose it is really necessary but just out of curiosity, how does one go about cleaning an esp?

I installed Gopher's MCM (isn't it a function of SkyUI or Immersive Hud?) a couple of weeks past and it seemed to be fine but the mods I've recently installed are not showing up in the MCM so that I can make adjustments. I just installed Splashes of Rain, it's not there. Cloaks of Skyrim...not there. Winter is Coming...not there. Wet and Cold...no joy. Footprints...not there. I don't know how many of those mentioned...or other mods I've installed (mostly Gophers recs) should be available for adjustment through the MCM but the only two mods showing are SkyUi and Immersive HUd. How can I fix this problem? I appreciate any advice or help.

Thank you. It was update.esm. Says it has 92 ITM and 3 UDR. Gess i better DL Tes5edit.
-
When I run Loot to rearrange the load order of my mods, I get a report at the end of the process and Loot informs me that I have one dirty file (can't remember the exact terminology)...it doesn't say which one. So what is it referring to and how do I fix it? I've watched Gopher's vid about Tes5edit...is Loot referring to one of the files gopher talks about that needs to be cleansed of dirty edits? PS...this might should go in MOd Talk but not sure--Loot's not really a mod or is it?

Yes and no. But I thank you for your time, patience, and temperance. I understand...kind of...why a mod would need the assets from the DLC. I guess what I don't understand is why a separate version for each DLC isn't offered. Many other mods I've run across seem to work requiring only one--the one the mod version is aimed at. Most mods that need the assets from a DLC are offered in a version for DG and another one for DB, IOW. For people like myself, that's ideal. Maybe there's no answer, but... I have the non-DLC version of the mod that first made me ask the question. It's brilliant. I'm fond of it. But it is not the only one of its kind. It is, however, seemingly the only one that requires both DG and DB...at the same time...in order to play even one of them. The only one that I'm aware of in any case. If you tell us what mod you're talking about, we could probably explain why there's no ONLY-DG or ONLY-DB versions. So far, you've been rather vague and thus it is difficult to give specific and concrete answers to your query. As the topic degenerated I didn't want to associate the mod with the unpleasantness. It's a weather mod.

I have the non-DLC version of the mod that first made me ask the question. It's brilliant. I'm fond of it. But it is not the only one of its kind. Seemingly, however, the only one that requires both DG and DB in order to play even one of them. Let me use one of my own mods as an example. I made a magic mod called Grimoire that adds 100+ spells to the game. It requires both DG and DB to run. This is because some of the spells directly call quests, races, and scripts that don't exist without DG and DB. For a mod like mine, it's literally not possible to have the same mod without DG and DB. So I would't be able to make a version that only needs DG or only needs DB. You have to have both, or your game will crash and your computer will go up in flames. (Not literally, but you get the idea). That's how important, how integral, the link between my mod and the DLCs is. For some mods, the dependency on the DLC isn't integral - for example, if you are using a texture from DG in your mod. The texture can easily be transfered into one of the folders that comes with your mod, and BOOM - no more DG dependency. You can't do that if you're using the guts of the DLC, though. Again, thank you for your time and patience. Appreciate it.

In my experience trolls never become moderators and never have the authority to ban anyone. I started this thread looking for answers. In the first sentence I said I was new to modding. What part of "new to modding' don't you understand? I was assuming that anyone who responded could read, would read and understood basic English. Your response was to call me "clueless." Well, duh! I'm fine with being clueless--it's an indication that I recognize my ignorance and am looking to become less ignorant. It's a badge of honour if only because it indicates that i can recognize where I need to improve. People who call others clueless usually do so because they are already perfect and see everybody else as beneath them. I stated that Microsoft was arrogant because they presume to think they know what is best for the people who use their product. the issue of the fonts has been a fairly major annoyance and issue on the Internet for at least three years. Microsoft could have fixed it. Microsoft could have released a version of windows that wasn't so bloated. They have chosen not to...they have chosen to impose their judgement on everybody else. whether you pay for it or not Microsoft is not responsive and that's arrogance in my book. Similarly....I suggested that any piece of software, free or not, that presumes I can afford to buy another piece of software that I don't want...esp. when so many other modders are more than capable of making versions of their mods specifically for DawnGuard and another one specifically for Dragonborn (instead of assuming that I ...or anyone else wants both) is a flawed piece of software. I did ask if there was a reason why such assumptions were being made...a real reason and not just laziness or indifference. You, on the other hand came to this thread looking for trouble--that's trolling at its finest. You didn't read or understand either my question or my follow-up remarks. I doubt you even tried--too much bother for you, I suppose. If you think banning me is the answer and would make you happy...get rid of that rat chewing at your innards...why don't you just put me on your ignore list? You're already blind, deaf and dumb to any opinion other than your own, so nothing significant will change. Except you won't be frothing at the mouth.
-
See above post.... I suspect that in order to not be clueless you've written your own operating system and don't need to use Windows. Or perhaps you've just decided that your particular version of bending over is righteous and noble and not really bending over...and everyone else should follow suit. I mean Microsoft doesn't have to answer to you and if you stopped using Windows we'd all be happier.
-
I understand all this Oh? How do you like having to deal with all the extra...and spurious...foreign language fonts (such as Tunga and Utsaah and @NSimSun and @MingLiU and @PMingLiu, to name but a few) that Microsoft "forces" to you load up with Windows and that you cannot get rid of? It's the same sort of situation...you can either bend over and grin & bear it... or you can stop using Windows altogether. What have you done in that regard? I don't think Skyrim plays on a Mac too well. I am not interested in singling out...or dissing...any particular author or any particular mod. I know that there are alternatives...just as Linux and/or OS10 are alternatives...and I will probably go with one of them. That said, I don't know about anyone else but I consider Microsoft's attitude about the extra fonts arrogant in the extreme. How about you?

I'm fine with needing one of the DLC's...either/or....I understand why a mod might have an optional file that requires one of the DLC's. The problem is that requiring both at the same time forces a user to buy/acquire/activate both DLC's in order to play just one of them. There's no choice...except not use the mod. It may be the mod authors right to limit choice but it's short sighted at best and maybe even a bit arrogant at worst--"my way or the highway." I believe that I am suitably grateful to modders...I am aware and appreciative of the terrific work they do and the fact that they offer it to the community free of charge. Ideally, theoretically, every mod is an expression of generosity. I know and acknowledge that. But is modding about showing off...showcasing your talents...or about offering options (choice)? And yes, I can choose to not use the mod...and probably will.
-
Fairly new to modding.... I recently installed a mod on the vanilla game. When reading the description and preparing to DL the main file I noticed that the mod required both Dawnguard and Dragonborn. I was planning on buying Dragonborn but not Dawnguard. I asked the author of the mod what I should do if I wanted DB but not DG; which mod variation should I install and would the file for DB and DG work if just one of the DLC's was installed; and why was I being forced to buy both in order to be able to add and play just the one. I didn't get a very responsive answer and wondered if someone in the community could explain it to me....???? And are there very many other mods that require both or none?
-
Thanks...so if I have a mod with scripts activated and I de-activate it after playing a minor quest or two and get that warning on a subsequent load...and I ignore the warning...will my quest still be completed, my loot or gold still be in my inventory and my level progress stay the same?
-
So...I've been watching Gopher's vids and modding my game (first time after 200+ hours of play) and got to wondering. If I install a mod such as Pure Weather and play along with it for a couple of save games and then decide I'd like to try Climates of Tamriel...what happens? Do I get a warning message on load-up that the savegame I'm trying to load has content that relies on a mod that is no longer present? Will I have to load an old savegame from before I started with Pure Weather? Also, is there some sort of leftover traces of Pure Weather that I need to get rid of before activating COT? thanks....

The whole issue of "fair" is politically correct hogwash. Is it fair to kill someone who has a bronze sword while you have an iron sword? Is it fair to kill someone if you've been training your whole life in swordplay and your opponent just wears a sword for ceremonial purposes? Is it fair if you outweigh your opponent? Have faster reflexes? Better manual dexterity? Better eyes? If someone hits you in the face with the hilt instead of the blade, is that unfair? If they get in close and trip you, is that unfair? If you don't know where the COP is on your own weapon and are disarmed, is that unfair? Should a master of karate hold back because his opponent is a wrestler? Or doesn't even know how to make a fist? It's borderline stupid to even suggest it. Everyone brings a unique set of talents and skills to any endeavor they undertake. Someone is always at a disadvantage. You come to a duel with the skills you have, not the ones you wish you had...it's not supposed to be a stalemate. IRL, a duel...as with war or any kind of combat...is never a game where you get up after being stabbed in the heart and go back to a previously save. And it's never, ever, "fair."
