To summarize, my view of joining the Stormcloaks is the same as getting a wooden sword and a paper hat and yelling "Skyrim belong to the nords". Can't be more naive.
You're right, of course. But all you're really saying is that believing in things like honour and freedom and fairness--the things we took for granted before we became cynical or tired or afraid...is the same as being naive.
The problem with all that is that we don't stop believing because we've lost our freedom; we lost our freedom because we stopped believing.

The whole conflict in Skyrim is mirrored by our own society. Most people not only would choose security (or the illusion of security) over freedom and/or privacy, they've come to expect it.
We've gotten to the point where we will tolerate...maybe even welcome...repression, even persecution and violence rather than exercise personal responsibility (read "freedom") and the attendant risks and uncertainties. We'd rather stay silent and still...like a rabbit quivering in the brush...than speak the truth if there is even the slightest chance that it will offend someone who might get mad.
The Empire and their agents, the Thalmor...or perhaps that should be the other way around--the Thalmor and their agents, the Empire...are roughly analogous to our own government. And it almost doesn't make any difference what government you live under.
With freedom...almost by definition...comes responsibility and all the risks that determining ones own fate implies.
It is not surprising that so many find the Stormcloaks to be an unsettling and to-be-avoided-at-all-costs proposition.
Someone once said something to the effect that those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither and will lose both..

Thanks for the response.
I did read the note and all the journals...I guess just not very thoroughly or at the very least I didn't retain much (not too surprising at my age)
I'll go back in and see if I can find out what I missed.

Using version 1_1_4.
Doing the lady in the lighthouse quest...got to the treasure room and opened the chests. Picked up everything but the dwarven dagger, the orcish sheild and the ingot. Got the note to Wulf's parents. But as i left the lighthouse, I thought to check my journal and it says that I've still got to search for traces (?) of Janna's disappearance in the treasure chest...or something to that effect.
Is there something I'm missing? Is the quest bugged?
How do I complete the quest?

That might be it...But Realistic Water Two 1.11 is supposed to have all the "optional patches included.
Maybe I just remember looking at the Google doc that addresses the "optionals" for RWT

Well, I was hoping someone who had played Wyrmstooth would be able to quickly tell me what I needed. I have looked at almost all the mods I have installed and found nothing about needing a Wyrmstooth compatibility patch. Maybe I'm good to go, I don't know...I just remember thinking that I needed something additional for Wyrmstooth when I first started thinking about playing it --a couple of months ago.
Too bad Wyrmstooth didn't mention any incompatibilities and of course the search engine at the mod site doesn't seem to offer much help.
-
There are compatibility patches for several mods. What is your load-order?

Apologies for the dupe...I wasn't sure where this was best placed.
What's needed to play Wyrmstooth...other than Wyrmstooth?
I seem to recall that one or more mods have an additional file that is intended for Wyrmstooth, I can't seem to find any info in that regard without checking every single mod I have installed.

But some who have Real Clouds don't seem to have it.
Why can't I just leave it where it is? It's not in my way or anything. I'm at Skudafn Temple now and when I get back the only thing I'll have left (that I know of) is Faalskar and maybe Wyrmstooth.
-
How's this, then?
http://www.bootmaker.com/pics/installed%20mods.jpg
So, if I'm understanding,,, "22 is hex for 34th position in the load order, and again it seems to be Real Clouds...which is listed as 22. Coincidence?
-
The first two numbers tell you the mods position in Hex. Here, it'd be the 34th mod in your load order.
I don't have 34 mods installed.

Yes, it's the Eye of Magus. But I defeated Arcano and completed that quest long ago.
However, I recently installed Real Clouds. I like it pretty well, no major problems that I know of. Except...
When I did a console click I got the identity code "22008912. Real clouds is the 22nd mod in my load order. So from what I've been told, the reason the Eye of Magus is sitting in the mountains is due to something Real Clouds.
Could you look into this? I can provide .jpgs if wanted.I have been told I can disable the EOM, presumably through the console. Can someone please line out the proper steps and commands?

AFAIK, NMM...that's what I'm using....doesn't have text export either. (I actually meant to suggest that NMM be altered to export the list but accidentally said Loot. )
I don't think that mod is what I'm looking for. It seems like it would be simple for NMM to offer the export of all you active plugins, but you can't even ctrl +c it.

I was passing by the Abandoned Prison on my way to White run today and noticed a big blue globe in the rock above the towers.
Does anyone know what this is? I've ever seen it before? Is it part of a mod or a quest I don't know about?

What no one is experiencing the same thing? What am I getting wrong?

Hope this is in the right place...
I have a question about NMM. There seem to be a fairly large number of mods that, even though they have recently been updated and can be downloaded with the Nexus Mod Manager (or Mod Organizer), apparently need to be installed manually--files dropped into specific directories, changes made to one or more .ini files, etc..
I DL'd one of these the other day with NMM and "activated" it with NMM...only I didn't, of course--it wasn't really activated although it said it had been. I needed to DL it manually and install it manually.
So what does NMM do with these files it DL's and how can I activate them?

Realistic Lighting Overhaul 4.0.8.01I am wanting mostly to make the game look better and be more immersive. I am looking for a clouds mod and nightime sky mod. I am looking to make the waterfalls look better at a distance and perhaps terrain look better at a distance (BTW what is "LOD"?)
I am looking for more, lusher foliage (grass and trees) and for better town and villages.
I have been looking at Automatic Variants and bareback's (?) creature pack.
Also intending to DL Wymstooth and Dragonborn. As well as some additional quests.
Also looking at the mod that lets you go to High Hrothghar and trade Dragon Shouts for perks, etc.
Some of these probably bring to mind immediate choices--such as Lush Trees and Grass, and I don't mind--but I don't want to bog down my game anymore than necessary and I don't want conflicts or clipping or strange artifacts. I've had some problems with some of the more popular mods. Installing, testing, and uninstalling gets old and doesn't leave much time for actually playing the game.
So...given what I do have I would appreciate some advice as to which mods I could install without major problems to enhance my game. All thoughts and opinions would be welcome --I have read descriptions till I am blue in the face--now I need to narrow it down a bit.

Thank you for responding.
I haven't been able to play much more than ten minutes or so since I posted the inquiry, but I think I have the problem resolved.
Bottom line I think it was a conflict between CoT and ELFX. The interiors section of CoT wasn't playing nice with ELFX interior lighting (or vice versa). I deactivated CoT and reactivated it with the Interiors set to default (vanilla) .
Anyway when a get more time, this weekend, I'll know more.
Thanks again.

I recently installed this mod and i like it. I like it. Kudos to the author(s) and to the mod itself. I am not criticizing, I am looking for insights and help.
I set the mod up to give me more realistic interiors--colder, more rustic, a little darker. I could have set it up to have interiors be warmer and a little brighter. But I wanted to experience the immersion.
So I walk into Honeyside and it is suitably dark. But the odd thing is that as I'm walking towards the bed suddenly a square of almost white appears on the floor, and then disappears again. I realized very quickly that it is supposed to be a patch of light coming from the window. But one step in any direction and it disappears...breaking immersion.
Is this something I'm just noticing now because of the interior lighting setting? Or is it a problem with my system, or a mod conflict (I use Loot), or one that I can fix...maybe by switching to warmer interiors.
Or do I just have to live with it?
-
Thanks, that appears to have been the problem. I was so eager to make the adjustments and get them running, I didn't wait long enough. As i think on it, I seem to remember Gopher talking about that too. I watched the video twice (and parts of it four times) but it just escaped my memory.
-
So...new problem. I DL"d Tes5Edit and cleaned the update.esm. Seemed to work fine.
Then I installed some new mods--the immersion mods Gopher talks about in his videos--and ran Loot again. Got another "dirty plugin," This time it was cloaks. esp--it contains 2 ITM records according to Loot.
So...I don't suppose it is really necessary but just out of curiosity, how does one go about cleaning an esp?
-
I installed Gopher's MCM (isn't it a function of SkyUI or Immersive Hud?) a couple of weeks past and it seemed to be fine but the mods I've recently installed are not showing up in the MCM so that I can make adjustments.
I just installed Splashes of Rain, it's not there. Cloaks of Skyrim...not there. Winter is Coming...not there. Wet and Cold...no joy. Footprints...not there.
I don't know how many of those mentioned...or other mods I've installed (mostly Gophers recs) should be available for adjustment through the MCM but the only two mods showing are SkyUi and Immersive HUd.
How can I fix this problem? I appreciate any advice or help.

Falskaar newbie--first quest bugged?

[sigh] I went back to Wulf, no help.
Finally, I went back to an earlier save--when I first got done talking to the Jarl in AmberHold--I decided I would do that quest first and headed off to the priory. I talked to Brother Thorvald (?) there and that part of the quest seemed fine. But then I talked to one of the other priors and he asked me to look for some things that another monk had secreted nearby. I swear, I have covered every inch around the priory...north south and east. I ran across the alter with the dead necromancer but no sign of any "items." That spot sure seems like the most likely place but nothing, just the dead body and a soul gem.
I finally just suspended the game there...at the priory.
While I was running around I got to thinking that maybe I should have read the note to Wulf's parents that I found in the treasure chest. But the game didn't really give me that option like other important notes or journals, etc., and I thought I was just supposed to deliver it to Wulf.
I'll have to try that...but now with the failure to find the secreted items at the priory, I an wondering if my game is glitched. The main quest seems to be going along fine but the side quests....????
Any thoughts/help would be appreciated. There's no Wiki to fall back on when you get stuck...and I don't mind being stuck but I don't like glitched quests.
