  1. When I run Loot to rearrange the load order of my mods, I get a report at the end of the process and Loot informs me that I have one dirty file (can't remember the exact terminology)...it doesn't say which one.

So what is it referring to and how do I fix it?

I've watched Gopher's vid about Tes5edit...is Loot referring to one of the files gopher talks about that needs to be cleansed of dirty edits?

PS...this might should go in MOd Talk but not sure--Loot's not really a mod or is it?

  2.

    To answer the original question...

Mods sometimes require DG or DB or both because they use assests from those DLCs - this means that the mod will have a masterfile dependency on the DLC(s), and your game will crash if you don't have them.

A mod can sometimes have a "Non-DB" version, depending on how deeply ingrained the DLC content is in the mod. Some mods CAN'T have a non-DLC version - trying to make one would tear the mod to shreds.

I hope that answers your question.

Yes and no. But I thank you for your time, patience, and temperance.

I understand...kind of...why a mod would need the assets from the DLC. I guess what I don't understand is why a separate version for each DLC isn't offered. Many other mods I've run across seem to work requiring only one--the one the mod version is aimed at. Most mods that need the assets from a DLC are offered in a version for DG and another one for DB, IOW.

For people like myself, that's ideal.

    Maybe there's no answer, but...

I have the non-DLC version of the mod that first made me ask the question. It's brilliant. I'm fond of it. But it is not the only one of its kind. It is, however, seemingly the only one that requires both DG and DB...at the same time...in order to play even one of them. The only one that I'm aware of in any case.

If you tell us what mod you're talking about, we could probably explain why there's no ONLY-DG or ONLY-DB versions. So far, you've been rather vague and thus it is difficult to give specific and concrete answers to your query.

As the topic degenerated I didn't want to associate the mod with the unpleasantness. It's a weather mod.

Let me use one of my own mods as an example.

I made a magic mod called Grimoire that adds 100+ spells to the game. It requires both DG and DB to run. This is because some of the spells directly call quests, races, and scripts that don't exist without DG and DB. For a mod like mine, it's literally not possible to have the same mod without DG and DB. So I would't be able to make a version that only needs DG or only needs DB.

You have to have both, or your game will crash and your computer will go up in flames. (Not literally, but you get the idea). That's how important, how integral, the link between my mod and the DLCs is. For some mods, the dependency on the DLC isn't integral - for example, if you are using a texture from DG in your mod. The texture can easily be transfered into one of the folders that comes with your mod, and BOOM - no more DG dependency. You can't do that if you're using the guts of the DLC, though.

Again, thank you for your time and patience. Appreciate it.

  5. Holy hell.

I pay Microsoft for a service. That alone is a sufficiently different situation from modders that it totally invalidates your asinine comparison. If you have a problem with Microsoft's font package, install Ubuntu and shut the hell up. I'm not bending over for anybody. I just don't care in the slightest about a handful of extra fonts on my system, not when I have literally thousands of fonts for my job as a graphic designer.

I recommend this thread be closed. There's no reasoning with somebody this self righteously stupid. Frankly if it were my choice to make I would outright ban you.

In my experience trolls never become moderators and never have the authority to ban anyone.

I started this thread looking for answers. In the first sentence I said I was new to modding. What part of "new to modding' don't you understand? I was assuming that anyone who responded could read, would read and understood basic English.

Your response was to call me "clueless." Well, duh! I'm fine with being clueless--it's an indication that I recognize my ignorance and am looking to become less ignorant. It's a badge of honour if only because it indicates that i can recognize where I need to improve. People who call others clueless usually do so because they are already perfect and see everybody else as beneath them.

I stated that Microsoft was arrogant because they presume to think they know what is best for the people who use their product. the issue of the fonts has been a fairly major annoyance and issue on the Internet for at least three years. Microsoft could have fixed it. Microsoft could have released a version of windows that wasn't so bloated. They have chosen not to...they have chosen to impose their judgement on everybody else. whether you pay for it or not Microsoft is not responsive and that's arrogance in my book.

Similarly....I suggested that any piece of software, free or not, that presumes I can afford to buy another piece of software that I don't want...esp. when so many other modders are more than capable of making versions of their mods specifically for DawnGuard and another one specifically for Dragonborn (instead of assuming that I ...or anyone else wants both) is a flawed piece of software. I did ask if there was a reason why such assumptions were being made...a real reason and not just laziness or indifference.

You, on the other hand came to this thread looking for trouble--that's trolling at its finest. You didn't read or understand either my question or my follow-up remarks. I doubt you even tried--too much bother for you, I suppose.

If you think banning me is the answer and would make you happy...get rid of that rat chewing at your innards...why don't you just put me on your ignore list? You're already blind, deaf and dumb to any opinion other than your own, so nothing significant will change. Except you won't be frothing at the mouth.

  6. "Arrogant?" Really? That is a truly impressive level of ironic lack of self-awareness you've got going there. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. The modder offers you an expansion on the game that he or she has likely invested hours into. Your response is to go the forum and groan about their work because in your hopelessly clueless state you imagine it should have been done differently. And you say THEY are the ones saying "my way or the highway?" Gratitude does not work that way.

Modding is about whatever the modder wants it to be about. Already the modder has doubled your choices: you can play with their mod or without, where previously you could only play without. Instead of being grateful for the new choices you have you do nothing but whine about how the modder should have given you three or four or more new choices, new choices they are probably not interested in and probably not very motivated to spend another 60 hours of their life implementing just for you. And with an attitude like yours I can understand why pleasing you is not very high on their list of priorities.

Modders include those DLCs they deem sufficiently important to their mod's functionality or as required by the Nexus TOS. They do not answer to you and they have obligation to cater to your whims. Don't like the mod's requirements? Don't use download it. Your problem is now solved.

Or here's an idea. If you are e so certain that Dragonborn isn't necessary for this mod to work, create your own version. Then you never have to come back here and we'll both be much happier.

    See above post....

I suspect that in order to not be clueless you've written your own operating system and don't need to use Windows. Or perhaps you've just decided that your particular version of bending over is righteous and noble and not really bending over...and everyone else should follow suit. I mean Microsoft doesn't have to answer to you and if you stopped using Windows we'd all be happier.

  7. mods require DLCs if they use assets (textures, models and so on) that are part of the DLC or have quests in an area that is part of the DLC or were changed by the DLC. There can be many reasons why you would need a DLC. If the mod really needs a DLC you wont be able to use it properly without the DLC (either you cant play a quest or textures are missing, NPCs are stuck in positions they are not supposed in... or your game just crashes).

    I understand all this

next: you are not "forced"! the mod author does not force you to install his mod and therefore buy both DLCs!

Its his damn right to not provide a version that doesnt require DLCs

Oh? How do you like having to deal with all the extra...and spurious...foreign language fonts (such as Tunga and Utsaah and @NSimSun and @MingLiU and @PMingLiu, to name but a few) that Microsoft "forces" to you load up with Windows and that you cannot get rid of? It's the same sort of situation...you can either bend over and grin & bear it... or you can stop using Windows altogether. What have you done in that regard? I don't think Skyrim plays on a Mac too well.

If you can tell us what mod you are talking about i can have a look at it and maybe ther is a another mod that does almost the same but doesn't require DLCs?

If you really want the Mod and it really requires both DLCs then your only way is to buy them.

I am not interested in singling out...or dissing...any particular author or any particular mod. I know that there are alternatives...just as Linux and/or OS10 are alternatives...and I will probably go with one of them.

That said, I don't know about anyone else but I consider Microsoft's attitude about the extra fonts arrogant in the extreme. How about you?

  8. Which DLC's are needed to play a mod is dependant on which were loaded in the CK when the mod was created.

Sometimes DLC is needed because the mod relies on content from those DLC's, sometimes they are added so that the mods content will be added to those parts of the game. In the latter case, the modder sometimes makes a version that doesn't rely on the DLC's.

And yes there are many mods that require one, both, or none.

I'm fine with needing one of the DLC's...either/or....I understand why a mod might have an optional file that requires one of the DLC's. The problem is that requiring both at the same time forces a user to buy/acquire/activate both DLC's in order to play just one of them. There's no choice...except not use the mod. It may be the mod authors right to limit choice but it's short sighted at best and maybe even a bit arrogant at worst--"my way or the highway."

I believe that I am suitably grateful to modders...I am aware and appreciative of the terrific work they do and the fact that they offer it to the community free of charge. Ideally, theoretically, every mod is an expression of generosity. I know and acknowledge that.

But is modding about showing off...showcasing your talents...or about offering options (choice)?

And yes, I can choose to not use the mod...and probably will.

  9. Fairly new to modding....

I recently installed a mod on the vanilla game. When reading the description and preparing to DL the main file I noticed that the mod required both Dawnguard and Dragonborn. I was planning on buying Dragonborn but not Dawnguard.

I asked the author of the mod what I should do if I wanted DB but not DG; which mod variation should I install and would the file for DB and DG work if just one of the DLC's was installed; and why was I being forced to buy both in order to be able to add and play just the one.

I didn't get a very responsive answer and wondered if someone in the community could explain it to me....????

And are there very many other mods that require both or none?

  10. Uninstalling mods is only safe if they don't contain any scripting. I'm 99% sure that weather mods don't contain scripts so you're safe to switch those around. But any quest type mod is a different story. That little warning message can honestly just be ignored, it just means that anything that was changed by that mod (items/people etc.) will no longer be changed.

Thanks...so if I have a mod with scripts activated and I de-activate it after playing a minor quest or two and get that warning on a subsequent load...and I ignore the warning...will my quest still be completed, my loot or gold still be in my inventory and my level progress stay the same?

  11. So...I've been watching Gopher's vids and modding my game (first time after 200+ hours of play) and got to wondering.

If I install a mod such as Pure Weather and play along with it for a couple of save games and then decide I'd like to try Climates of Tamriel...what happens? Do I get a warning message on load-up that the savegame I'm trying to load has content that relies on a mod that is no longer present? Will I have to load an old savegame from before I started with Pure Weather?

Also, is there some sort of leftover traces of Pure Weather that I need to get rid of before activating COT?

    thanks....

  12. The Nords at worst would throw all non-Nords out of Skyrim (maybe kill them if they don't want to go).

The Thalmor plan to exterminate all of Mankind because they believe it'll help them regain their Divinity.

About the "fair" combat, there's actually quite a debate. Is using the Thu'um on an opponent who does not have that ability fair? Texts about King Wulfhart and other ancient Tongues seem to say otherwise.

The whole issue of "fair" is politically correct hogwash. Is it fair to kill someone who has a bronze sword while you have an iron sword? Is it fair to kill someone if you've been training your whole life in swordplay and your opponent just wears a sword for ceremonial purposes? Is it fair if you outweigh your opponent? Have faster reflexes? Better manual dexterity? Better eyes?

If someone hits you in the face with the hilt instead of the blade, is that unfair? If they get in close and trip you, is that unfair? If you don't know where the COP is on your own weapon and are disarmed, is that unfair?

Should a master of karate hold back because his opponent is a wrestler? Or doesn't even know how to make a fist? It's borderline stupid to even suggest it.

Everyone brings a unique set of talents and skills to any endeavor they undertake. Someone is always at a disadvantage. You come to a duel with the skills you have, not the ones you wish you had...it's not supposed to be a stalemate. IRL, a duel...as with war or any kind of combat...is never a game where you get up after being stabbed in the heart and go back to a previously save.

    And it's never, ever, "fair."

  13. LOOT should be placing the Unofficial Skyrim patch right below Update.esm, Falskaar can then be placed anywhere among the esms afterwards.

Thank you for taking the time.

After i posted this i went to Gopher's videos and by laboriously going through several of them and peering intently at certain scenes, I was just barely able to see that he had more or less the same load order.

It was Gopher that suggested that esm's come before esp's...but I guess I must have missed the exceptions to that rule--the patches.

    Anyway thanks again.

  14. So...just installed Falskaar and NMM put the Falskaar.esm below the Unofficial Skyrim patch.esp. "No problem," I thought "I'll just run LOOT."

But Loot left it that way. I know that as a general rule esm's should come before esp's. So how do I get the Falskaar.esm ahead of the Unofficial Skyrim Patrch.esp?

Or can it stay where it is?

  15. Why don't you give the authors of the water mods your suggestions on how to improve them?

Well, I kind of hoped I was with this thread.

But I guess I don't know how to give them my suggestions directly...and, truth to tell who am I to be telling them how to make mods? I've never made a mod in my life. Maybe some of what I'm talking about can't be done...I dunno.

  16. I posted this in response in another sub-forum but I got to thinking maybe it needed to be here...

I've looked at W.A.T.E.R, Pure Waters and Realistic Waters 2. None of them really improve all that much on the Vanilla game.

I've fished for years in mountain rivers and streams. I can "read" water...tell you where sunken boulders are and where the fish will lie. I'm not sure that the people who write mods for water have really looked at fast flowing water.

For instance, in every one of the above mods, there is no "pile-up" of water in front of boulders...as there should be...no wake at the sides, no slick behind. As there should be.

Almost as important is that there is no line of detritus where the water meets the shore. Friction slows water, and material caught at the edges tends to get hung up on the gravel or sand. I hate the way every single one of these mods makes the water sort of disappear onto the land. It's not real or immersive. In fact, it's kind of disturbing.

I can't "read" the water in Skyrim and I think most water mods make it worse.

Is the bottom of the river smooth? Most of the mods make it seem so. If there were sunken boulders, or even just larger rocks you'd see signs of them in the current and on the surface. You'd see it in the way the water behaved as it flowed over and past them. Running water is slowed and pushed up as it runs over these obstacles. It often creates moving or transitory "windowpanes." And, again, it slows as it get nearer the bank.

Where are the "tail-outs" in these rivers--Vanilla or modded? Where are the "seams"? Where are the eddies and whirlpools and "frog water" that occurs even in brawling streams?

More foam and more transparency is not...not, not, not...the answer.

  18. Thanks for that. Does using the install tool circumvent the problem I described above? It doesn't seem to put the files in a different place or anything.

You mentioned you had a channel. Does it cover the same material, step-by-step, as Gopher covers? I am a little ambivalent about Gopher's tutorials--very good so far and no glitches. But, for instance, I might choose Realistic Waters 2 over W.A.T.E.R. or Pure Water (just from the descriptions and the compatibility information). Thinking maybe Gopher's vids might be slightly dated?

  19. I followed gopher's vid and installed SKSE. In the vid he lines out how to start Skyrim with SKSE active. I followed those instructions correctly, but...

Sometimes when I click on the icon that executes skse_loader.exe, Steam will say that it's updating. When Steam gets done, Skyrim opens but without SKSE loaded. ( I don't know how it can do that....the shortcut points to skse_leader.exe, nothing else. I've checked it.)

In any case, I have to back out of Skyrim and click again on the icon which executes skse_leader to get into the game properly.

What's up with that? Am I missing something?

    Any thoughts?

  20. Once you install this mod (the only mod I have installed so far...except for the unofficial patch and SKSE scripts) how can you configure it?

I thought I had installed and configured it correctly but I'm still seeing clouds. Followed Gophers vid.

    Absolute newbie to modding...

  21. What is SUM?

I've seen a few of Gopher's videos...they're very good. I want...and am determined...to watch them. In the past...not yet being ready to install mods because of the weakness of my rig...i have not watched them closely--it sometimes seems you can get more time into watching videos (Gopher's included) than you've got in playing the game.

I watched the TES5Edit video and while not understanding a lot of it (no context) I suspected I'd have to come back to it.

I don't have the DLC's yet...I've only got one playthrough on the vanilla game (@300 hours)...might not get Heathfire or DawnGuard. Vampires and cannibalism aren't my cuppa and I don't need another house--I've already got stuff scattered between the Mage's College, Riften, Breezehome and Kodlak's old quarters. I even refused to become a thane in Ulfric's court despite the nasty comments of his courtiers. I do want Dragonborn and I was looking at some of the mods that add quests and/or new lands--like Falskaar.

So...not right this minute but maybe this weekend...I'll sit down and start watching videos and reading tutorials. What we go through for Skyrim...maybe there's a mod to erect a statue of the Dragonborn in some city to commemorate his sacrifices.

  22. I suppose some people take to this like fish take to water. But for me, at least, it's so very hard to know exactly where to begin and what sequence to go from there. I have already installed NMM and the Unofficial patch. I suppose the next step is to install Loot. And then SMIM. And then, slowly, one at a time, any mod I want , running look after each installation.

Does that sound like a good plan?

I like all your recommendations but don't know why a person would choose the CaBal120 mods as opposed to Skyrim HD2K. From what you say they are compatible with each other but what good does it do...other than burden your vram...to run both or even bits and pieces of both? I'm looking for insight and advice...

Complicating all this is the video about TES5Edit (and here I'm probably showing what a clueless newb I am )...when do you need to install and use that? Does it, or is there another mod/download that can, correct bad saves or files in the Vanilla game? I have about four quests that I cannot complete and am wondering if this is something that has been or can be addressed?
