I had a blast with Morrowind when it came out. I mean, it's all about exploration and original areas/finds for some of us. I know that they had to put a lot of work into meticulously placing every weapon and item in the game, well save for the crates. But, isn't that the point? Hard work pays off? The thing that really, really annoyed me about Oblivion was that it didn't take me long at all to figure out that it really didn't make a rat's arse where I went in the game, I was going to come up with the same things! It didn't matter one bit if I traveled across the land or just kept reloading the same stupid dungeon. What's worse? Didn't get what you wanted? Oh that's o.k. just reload and walk back in. That's "canned". What's more, all the dungeons looked exactly the same more or less. I realize that the dungeon basics were the same in MW, however, I think that the creativity and difference in the types of dungeons would quite override the problem of monotony. This wasn't the case in Oblivion at all. Less dungeon creativity, less item originality and smaller overall world equates to "NO need to explore"!
So, anyone know what the scoop is on 5?

Put me down for less chops too. I mean, heavy armor might mean a few more hacks and slashes, light armor a couple less than medium... whatever. But, there's something wrong with being hit 50 times with an axe and not dying because of good armor "skill". To take it a step further, how about losing a limb? Or, at least a D&D'esque "Crippling Strike"?

I had to vote "yes, and no." Although, I've never thought that response made any sense. "Perhaps," or even "maybe" makes much more sense. Anyway, I've often thought it would make a fantastic online multiplayer... ideally. If players could stick with basic stat and level ups without all the uber stuff, cheats, etc. It might be o.k. Going online with it would just cheapen the whole thing. I noticed the same thing in games like HL2. I loved playing HL2. But, online you've got people jumping around like they're in space and moving around in super-sonic speeds. Online play always just has a way of making all the in-game movements look dumb. All that, excluding all the cheating and hammed up game play that everyone would end up doing. I suppose "co-op" could be interesting as far as not having the problem with competition, etc. However, it might still end up looking like HL2's "Synergy" mod, if you've ever seen that...
All I can say is, done right, I think it would be a heck of a lot of fun and a great idea... done wrong, it's going to equal stupid looking graphics and people stepping all over the Elder scrolls the same way they did most all the others. i.e. Visually, Crysis was a lot of fun offline. Online? Crap. Looked like it, played like it.

Hi, one of the things that I noticed when playing Oblivion again is how little trees there really are. Are there any general mods that address this problem of having far too few trees without having too serious a hit on processing power?
Thanks ahead. -
o.k. I got fcom up and running great now... one thing I did was I did not mark "Leveled lists." Also, I installed MMM public release instead of 37 beta 1. That would explain a lot.
So, now to just install the few extras I have like Immersive Interface and Eric's Crafting Mod for FCOM. One thing I'm still not clear on though is, is Eric's Crafting supposed to be bashed along with the bash patch and THEN placed after the patch in load order? Or, is it NOT to be bashed at all?
-
nope, it's definitely the gold. I checked each one individually and even looked real closely to the table and sure enough, no gold peices. I can't explain it though. I also found several more skeleton meshes associated with OOO and MMM that weren't available... so, i'm now doing a fresh install of everything. But, still appreciate any insights as it is still helpful. And, yes, I do install other mods along with fcom, however, this time, I am going to go through and install each one individually after I get plain FCOM up and running, so that I can determine which/what might be a problem.

well, the classic bows are a part of fcom_realswords. But, I'm also missing some gold coins, which are, of course, part of oblivion.esm.... what does that mean? I use Boss for my load order also.

wow, Refscope sounds awesome. I was hoping for something like that. thanks David. I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes.
Apparently, I'm really bad at getting all my meshes in, because I've never even seen the purple ones...
-
The cause is missing meshes (the .nif files in your data\meshes\xxx folders).
Fixing it can be tricky if you don't know exactly what mod the missing meshes are from. So, step one would be to use a tool called Refscope to determine that: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21862
Once you know which mod is causing the trouble, examine the archive from the download carefully, and make sure you have copied all the meshes and textures to their proper locations in your Data folder.
The folder paths of these files is VERY important; that's how the game looks for and finds it's resources.
If, for instance, your mod says that a "classic bow" is located in Data\meshes\SomeFolder\ClassicBow.nif -- and the file is not there, then that causes the Yellow Diamonds.
If, for instance, the ClassicBow.nif file says look in Data\textures\SomeFolder\ClassicBow.dds -- and the file is not there, that's when you end up with purple objects. Purple is what Oblivion has decided is it's default color when it can't find the texture.

Every time I install FCOM, even if I follow fivefries install guide, I always have at least a few of those stupid yellow exclamations that show up in game, particularly with some bows. Right now I"m having the "classic bow" and "seagull bobkins" not show up. I think those are a part of Frans but not sure. Does anyone know exactly what causes this, so that I can stop doing that. Since my Hard Drive crashed, I now have to re-install FCOM... such a pain.
thanks

Hey all. I have fcom running and have had with great success for about 7 months now. My character is level 30 something now and has been a lot of fun. The other day I was sleeping in game to level up and after I selected the attributes I wanted, I clicked on "done" button I think it is, and it just locked up on me. So I tried leveling in a different area, but had the same problem. I did this repeatedly without any luck. I know FCOM can come with oddities like this, so it's no surprise to me. I was just wondering if anybody had any quick fixes for this or perhaps knew of an easier way to level up that I didn't have to click the done button... or something!
thanks in advance.

Wow, I see that Morrowind characters are looking pretty good these days. When I looked at the first one, I though for a second that it was Oblivion. So, if they're doing that with the graphics in MW, do they have any huge overhaul mods for it as well?
-
Man, i'll tell you what, from my experience in gaming...so many things can get changed during the making of a game, even at the last minute, that it's really tough to predict WHAT 3 will be like. However, I think that one was an absolute classic. Well, it was a classic..period. But, I did play it for years and finally grew tired of it. I'm personally looking forward to Crysis...as I haven't bought it yet. And, I'm always a tomb raider fan...so i've got some more of those to buy yet. ;)

Are there many servers that use the project reality mod for online play? Oh yeah, and my screen name is...uh...Goodfortitude. ;)

I just started playing online. Tons of ppl still play and I'm having a blast so far. 'course you've always got the crybabies there that get upset 'cause someone else doesn't spend as much time harnessing their nerd skills as they do. :) But, it's still fun if you can ignore the kids. hehe

I don't think it's so much a matter of people mistaking games for reality as it is people "mistaking reality for a game". In other words, in some cases not all, I think they know the difference. Consider this: Pretty much the majority of, we'll say, American society (for the sake of argument), atleast 55% or greater have some sort of vice or "outlet" that they feel compelled to engage in for the "high". For instance, video games. Some are more hardcore and seek after drugs or whatever. For some it's something like cigarettes. Or even running. But, no matter what it is that they engage in, after a certain amount of time, diminishing returns kicks in and invariably they need a greater "high". For a lot of people the thing that gives them the most release is video games. But for a select few, I believe that what they really like to do the most is simply shoot guns. Now that "fix" in and of itself is no big deal. It's like archery or any other thing of skill. But, when combined with the shooter games where you are blasting one person away and then the other again and again, pretty soon that game needs to be even more realistic to satisfy that urge. And let's face it video games are all just that, games. And, after a while NO game is realistic enough to satisfy that itch. Soon enough they feel compelled to act it out for real. Much in the same way that people who use hard drugs for their fix sometimes end up overdosing and dying, or runners end up running for their high until they have a heart attack.
This, ofcourse, does not take into account those who are just plain looney tunes. Nor does is take into account those who may simply be bitter to the core about one thing or another. I do believe that some just place the blame on video games as an excuse. But, it's one theory as to why some (probably a small percentage of "video game 'shooters'." And an even smaller percentage of "teen shooters".) may seek to bring their game to life. The interesting thing is that if I am correct...video games being even more realistic may actually help to keep these people inside their homes and off the streets!

I'm not defending the police. In my experience, and research, they are too overzealous to make that arrest (some to even fight, and I do have experience, but I'll let you do your own research). Too freakin' adrenaline/steroid pumped for anyone's good. I've seen WAY too many news clips and videos of them beating down helpless little women, rubbing mace in the eyes of defenseless teen girls, beating down small unarmed guys with or without night sticks, and believe me, I could go on and on. It gets much worse. I think that the only thing that keeps SOME of them from hitting you in the face for saying what they don't want to hear is the very law that they are supposedly upholding. Keep in mind I have a good friend who is an officer. I only hope that after several years on the force he is still the same great guy I once knew him to be.
But, about the article. Well, Parents......parents tend to be very worried about their little ones, even teens are still little ones to them. So, when they start seeing patterns, which is what I think is happening in the U.S. with guns and schools, they tend to get really edgy. So this mom, though she obviously knew more than we do about her son, overreacted. You can't really put in a few words what your kids mean to you. But, lets just say that not even the very thought of "shot guns" and your children really mix well. So yeah parents WILL often overreact. About the game mod, I don't really see the big deal either.......I mean heck, I think it would be cool if someone built a life like replica of their school or their home school, whatever. (in fact, I'll play that if you got it) :)
Now, because kids simply aren't raised to respect parents, guns, authority, or even LIFE....you name it, of course a lot of teens in America are going to bring guns to school and blow away their friends because mommy didn't get them the right kind of clothes to wear and they were getting made fun of, or whatever the excuse. There's never really a good reason for it. It's always the same stupid lame excuse...they were angry about something. Things like columbine just didn't happen in the mid to early 1900's in the U.S., at least not very often. People were, overall, friendlier. So, it presses the question, "what's changed in the culture that kids have become so freaking bold?" To be honest a lot's changed, and for the worse.
I'm not saying they weren't overreacting, all I'm saying is that there are patterns developing in the schools. When you've been hit repeatedly in the face, hard, and someone rears back their fist at you...you tend to "move away". I think this mom was worried about her son and some other school kids and didn't know what else to do. Her solution was to call the police.

An entire continent that you couldn't run across in just a few minutes could be cool. But, the elderscrolls is the best as far as exploration and large areas as far as I can tell so, I'm not harping. But, two things are most important for me. First, the character animations, for a lack of a better word, are really hurting. They did grow immensely from Morrowind to Oblivion. However, it's still strange to me that your character can't actually lie down, as others can, or use actual hands to pick up food or objects. Even a greater atrocity, the trained fighters move their bodies and punches exactly the same way the untrained fighters do. If you wanted to have a martial artist, you may as well forget it, IMO, you're just not going to get one.
The second thing, that could change for the better, is not having such a "canned game". For instance, in Morrowind you could find certain items only in certain places. In Oblivion, you find the same things no matter where you go. That's kind of dumb.
Other than those couple of things.........I'd be happy with "Oblivion II" :)

Will V be "canned" the way Oblivion was?
