took awhile but I finally got in by clicking the login button while the captcha box had the flashing black dot going on.

no you do not need CC for mods to work. But be aware that if you install any CC items NMM will no longer work properly. Also you need to start the game via the mod manager not a short cut otherwise it will not load the mods. Make sure you have the current version of F4SE http://f4se.silverlock.org/ and NMM https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases
