What you do is set to "update only when i launch game"

And then never use Steam to launch game, but only F4SE.

You probably already knew this so this is just in case.

Yep. That's what I did. Together with making the manifest file read-only. It's never going to update.

Not even if you launch steam and click the [update] button. (which replaces the [play] button)

Not until you make the manifest file writeable again.

Looks like we are talking about totally differnet missions here.

My spec as stated at the top is for 512x512 and 1024x1024 books and misc objects, I never mentioned 4K or 8K or scenery.

    Makes no difference.

Just trying to tell you that its not so clear cut that most folks actually want the higher quality (or even have the specs for it).

& that a ultra high quality book or misc. object, as part of the scenery, will stick out between the rest of the scenery (especially when being 100% vanilla, not even the HD textures)

but that aside, BC7 does not require any newer or faster or whatever hardware. (it even might be a bit faster) - it's just not what Fallout was build around using. But again, using it or not is what ever you prefer or value higher.

Personally I choose consistency with the existing stuff.

  3. For the old version you will need a mod (TruBy9) for ultrawidescreen.

I've had no issues so far with the next-gen version, although it all (the HUD, text, and stuff) looks bigger as I am used to with TruBy9.

...but I have yet to do some hour long playing. Just launched it a few times, checked if it all worked, did a few mod tests, but that's about it until now.

Given that most folks (who matter) have 8Gb VRAM these days, standardising on BC7 for all maps is OK then ?

*EXCEPT* diffuse with alpha has caught me for textures with transparent sections (e.g. Paper_d.DDS) that will only work properly in BC3 DXT5 else the transparent sections are filled in black.

ps Shout-out to niston for Textureinfo and Texturescan

    That's quite the assumption.

I offer my greener wasteland textures in 4K, but until now, the 2K version has been downloaded a LOT. (even more in the past)

    & BC7 doesn't use more memory ...

So, sure, you can use BC7 and it will work, most of the time. Still, you are mixing compression methods which will not go unnoticed (visually) while playing.

Unless you are planning to redo all textures and increase their quality, any (ultra) high quality 8K BC7 texture will stick out like a sore thumb (imho)

I can't disagree with that, especially now that in the last few years the form has been perfected and provided the game you are playing has a FOV that can match the perspective, the ultra wide curved OLED IS the premiere gaming experience and if i had the loot that is exactly what i would have.

Addendum: To be fair i would still have a flat screen as I'm not sure 3D modeling or Photoshop would be efficient on a curved display.

It is. Both Blender and 3DS 2013 work & look perfectly, as does GIMP.

It is even better in my opinion, as the distance to the screen is always the same, as is the angle. (more or less) Where you always have a skewed vision with a flat screen, when looking at the sides of the monitor.

  6. Turning just 1 file to read-only would have prevented that. (the appmanifest_#insert version number#.acf inside steamapps folder) Not even if you actually hit the update button!

My steam did not update the game, as it simply couldn't. However, instead of the 'play' button, it just showed the 'update' button. (within steam, so launching the game by icon was no issue)

  7. Depends on who you ask.

I'm sticking with DXT5/BC3 for most of my textures, as that's the same as most of the vanilla stuff uses (next to DXT1/BC1)

Where others are hellbent on using BC7. Being the newer / "better" option.

I rather stick to what the game uses.

For any Diffuse map without Alpha channel Fallout 4 uses BC1.

For diffuse with Alpha it uses BC3.

For normal & specular it uses BC5.

The biggest 'thing' being support for Alpha channels & memory usage. I found that it makes practically no difference when simply using DXT5/BC3 for everything.

seriously do I need special mods for that?

I was thinking of buying a real large 4k TV screen and then going in via HDMI. Or should I get a purpose built gamer monitor?

The size and price relationship of modern large screen TVs is just so good.

8k screens are coming down in price too but i dont have any game or hardware to support that even with my upcoming upgrade to my desktop.

For the ultrawidescreen, or doom on 3 pc's ?

Either case, no. In case of Fallout 4, not anymore. I used the TruBy9 mod in the past (still do on my old rig) but with the next-gen update they added support for it.

I somewhat agree with worm82075, anything above 60Hz is fine by me. However, you are usually in front of a monitor, where as a TV is usually further away.

So, my own 45" screen is filling most of my view, where as the 100+" TV of a friend does not, since its 2 meters away. and it ain't ultrawide... So I might as well be playing on a 24" UHD monitor, by comparison, so there is that.

Mine is a curved OLED and I must say, it all looks beautiful.

I always had a preference for 3rd person as well, as i felt it was the only way to have a view comparable to a real human. As 1st person game limited u to the monitor and of course our human field of view is so much bigger.

But Widescreen may address this and i am determined ot go ultrawidescreen soon

I can recommend the ultrawidescreen 45" will do nicely 😉

But its still not 170 degrees of vision.

Some 30 years ago I played Doom using 3 PC's with 3 monitors (on a Novell netwerk, with 1 master & 2 nodes). View left, right & front. Now that was awesome 😉

Haven't seen such option ever since.

  10. Got the update installed on 1 (of 2) of my rigs. Works fine so far. Looks a bit better too. Non of my own mods needs updating (as expected, but you never know)

Most of the few mods i use still work, but still missing 'place everywhere'.

Have yet to do some serious gaming, but i am way to bussy modding/moddeling/texturing & testing (getting there with the "V4/32/33" tunnels:) )

Still got my non-updated 2nd/old rig as backup.

Looks like the first iteration of the new F4SE is up.

    Yep.

    & it works (so far)

...however, my most valued mod using it might not get updated... place everywhere.

Which would be a serious setback building settlements. (so here's hoping Lich will come down from starfield to update it. Although he hasn't touched it for years)

  12. I am extremely busy with my vault pieces mod. Got a ton of work to do, and the TV series just added a truckload to that. (I'm working on turning the vault 111 tunnel pieces into the ones from the TV series. Amongst a heap of other stuff)

Having said that: I think I can squeeze in the splitting up of a single mesh 😉

Wondering do you need F4SE to load custom 2k/4k textures or can they be manually installed without F4SE onto the new F4 update? Seems like Vortex won't run Fallout 4 without F4SE which is what I use to load the custom texture enhancements.

    Thanks

No, you don't. Purely for swapping textures (so, nothing new added, just replacing what exists) you need nothing extra, but a few .ini edits. Textures will work without .esp and/or .ba2.

Extracting any - textures.ba2 to your fallout data folder is enough to circumvent the (empty/dummy) .esp file.  Which also means you should not have any trouble loading them anyway, as the .esp file for a texture replacer is only there to add/load the - textures.ba2 archive. There is nothing there which could cause problems (unless they changed the .esp file format, which they didn't)

  14. TruBy9 might still work, but it will definitely become obsolete. As will the accelerator (for SSD's).

It seemed to me they were emphatically talking about consoles. All the references to next-gen was for the console versions of Fallout 4 🙂

    Yep.

There is no 'next-gen' when it comes to PC's. Not like the consoles, which have defined hardware for each 'new version'. A PS4 is a PS4, all over the world (for the most part. continental differences put aside), for its entire lifespan. Hardly any 2 PC's are the same and will remain the same, with huge variety in capabilities. So, my new RTX4090 rig is not designated as 'the next-generation' of my RTX2070 rig. (it probably would if it where consoles)

    edit:

As for the update: I welcome it. Sure, there will be some 'issues' to be taken care of. So what? This game NEEDS the update. Right NOW!

Since the TV series launched the interest for the game is peaking (downloads increased at least 2x for my vault pieces), and it lacks 'compatibility' with today's hardware and settings (SSD's, ultra-widescreen, etc.)

This is the (only) moment to fix that and get everybody going (again). & I for one am all for that 🥳

    Exiting!

Watched a few episodes and absolutely loving it thus far.

The eye for detail is amazing, the number of references immense. Even some of the sound effects are straight from the game. They truly made it with a lot of love for Fallout 3 & 4.

I don't care about some of the 'lore' issues, so just watching & smiling 🥰
