  1. In response to post #24733874. This. If we can consider eachother in the community as friends, then know that friends can be harsh to one another, when speaking truth. They can push and shove and tease and complain or even get extremely mad at one another - Not because of hate, but because you care for eachother and the hobby you share with one another.

We're talking about a hobby that many of us have put thousands of hours into. I don't think the modding community should be seen as villains in this. Especially if people wish to ascribe good intentions to Valve and Bethesda (Two companies that would probably not even exist anymore or be very small without their modding communities). AAA gaming has been going downwards for years and modding is what keeps the spirit of gaming alive for millions of people. Messing with that by introducing money and consequentially greed, on top of a very easily abused system of Steam Workshop and more and more information uncovered about how this was planned long in advance, and there's no way that the modding and gaming communities wouldn't raise absolute hell over this. I just truly hope that all parties learn from this. However, with monetary interests involved, I think everyone should be vigiliant that this could happen all over again, just better repacked in PR-speak than Gabe Newell's meltdown AMA.

Similar with the Havok physics engine's lack of documentation, as well as the lack of 64-bit support all the way up to today. Without tireless third party mod programs we couldn't have reached the 200-mod sized installations that we hear and see today (including my own). Getting past the 3.1 GB issue, for example. Bethesda really really needs to step up if they want to regain trust and respect.
  4. A few important thoughts: Will they reintroduce paid modding as part of Fallout 4 and TES6? What about those other games from other studios that Valve hinted would/will also have this introduced? What if Valve returns to this for Skyrim with the exact same idea but only minor improvements, such as a better, but still far too low cut for the modders? It's important to think about such issues as the weeks and months go by.

Well, if Steam and Bethesda wanted to reward modders, surely they would've made it a whole lot more developer-friendly, such as 80-90% of the income rather than the measily 25%. Still, when money gets involved in something as great as this, it really causes massive problems or even destroying the idea entirely. Competitors don't tend to share or work together.

Once you sell a mod, you're a professional developer. This opens the can of worms, the people that buy and play your DLC also would be vastly more strict and demanding, logically, and you would probably be breaking many rules on commercial use of software that only may be used non-commercially. With Steam having such little quality control (early access, greenlight, even a few normal old re-released games) this would've catched fire easily. I'm glad we don't have to worry about these things for a while though, until they try it again.

I don't think they can really see if we use mods when we have Steam on Offline Mode, running the game in SKSE with Nexus-only mods for example, nor see if the time I spent in the Creation Kit led to any mods. If they said published mods, well that would be a little bit closer.

There was a massive war machine being prepared and pushed out from various anonymous sites throughout the days too, as well as the massive spreading of the information. I very much doubt that Beth and Valve would've stopped if it wasn't for the absolutely massive resistance from modders, the community, and the gaming community as a whole.

This doesn't even have to be just donations, but supporting with friendly words and understanding, as well as offer even more support for beginning modders and promoting small-time modder's works if found to be potentially good.

We may also have to look out for spite updates from them for being caught between the two forces like this. Having said that, I do hope they will return to the fold and redouble their modding efforts for the community.
  11. Always remember that if it wasn't for continuous, internet-widespread revolt against Valve and Bethesda, they would have kept going. Valve isn't your friend. Bethesda has shown their hand, they have been/still are very willing to throw the mod community under the bus. They are also not our friend, perhaps neutral. Consider boycotting both companies for this attempt or at the very least temper all expectations and remain vigilant for new betrayals. Don't upload your mods to Steam Workshop, however. When they reintroduce this system, they can still monetize your mods without giving you even a cent. In the meantime, we can get back to modding without as many immediate worries.
  12. Simply monetizing mods alone will kill modding. The moment that money gets prioritized, everyone becomes a competitor of eachother for the almighty shekels. This whole system needs to go into the trashbin. Donations are great, I donate to modders on here.
  13. I'm starting to see a much bigger picture in this whole debacle. Mods, and open-source type actions, are antithetical to systems of control. They reduce the power that money has over people, promotes art and creativity leading to smarter and more happy people, shows a very positive side to humanity, of trust and generosity and can lead to greater and greater shared projects, even beyond gaming, into the real world.   14. In response to post #24570129. The only way the greedy learn is when their profits plummet. Boycotting Fallout 4 might be neccesary, every tool available within the law.
  15. This news makes me extremely worried about modding, gaming in general, and of course our cherished Nexus. You guys should probably look into talking with several network security specialists, lawyers, pre-emptively since this kind of encroaching, greedy behavior is going to want to remove all competition. That 75% rate for Beth and Valve is insane! Surely they could've flipped this around?! How the heck do they think they can get the popular backing of people when, in all reality, when you pay for mods, you are paying Beth, a company that brought us a broken, unfinished game (despite efforts at patching) and Valve, who really has no need for even more money, let alone such a large portion for content they clearly are able to offer for free until now. This appeal to greed is insane. I can hardly believe we went past this red line. I am losing consumer confidence in Valve and Bethesda and I already feel a lot less inclined in investing money, support and time in companies that so blatantly try to leech and in effect ruining such an amazing concept of free modding. Don't feed these leeches, who do not deserve even more of your money for products and services you already paid for. If you like an author's work, donate to them with kind words of support and a dollar or so. You may want to also back the Nexus itself, I can already see the legal fees coming into view in our dystopian future of 'Valve or Nothing'.
  16. Oh man, this really seems like it's going to be terrible for modding. If Valve actually goes through with this, I'm not going to forgive them. Modding is what kept gaming alive for me and if they're going to open it up to such horrendous abuse, theft, and overall insanity, this is going to be absolutely terrible for all involved. Modding is one of those really amazing things that shows a very positive side to people as a whole, sharing content freely to celebrate a game, to celebrate the medium. When money gets involved, it gets corrupted and messed up beyond recognition. I'm very happy that the Nexus is at least not going to fall so easily.
  17. Obviously the Steam Summer Sale has a lot to do with it. Other mod authors are probably people that are only now becoming more comfortable with modding for Skyrim to publish their works. Not all modders release the mods they make, of course.
  18. Gentlemen, you have my money and my support, I have full faith that you will both maintain and improve the Nexus more and more in the coming year(s). I'm impressed and grateful that you put so much time, work, effort and monetary investment in making sure everything works and I like knowing that my favorite modding site is run by five very talented individuals rather than some huge soulless superconglomerate solely interested in profits. Keep up the good work!
