It has been years but having finally finished the Dawnguard DLC I can say that the Ideal masters require more fleshing out. The Dragonborn defeating and freeing the lost souls after defeating Harkon would have been far more interesting and a great twist. But it's certianly possible to make a quest like the one you layed out.
