  1. I don't recall ever being required to make any kind of oath to become Thane. The jarl him/herself clearly states, "It's an honorary title mostly...." Sort of like being symbolically given "the Key To The City". All it is is the jarl acknowledging that in the Hold, your character is a useful and valuable member of the community. Note that the newly minted thane is NOT assigned any duties or obligations. Ah I guess that just about finishes it off. The thane is nothing more than a status symbol. I was secretly hoping to ascribe meaning to it beyond that. I wonder if there are any mods that allow you to become the equivalent of a knight under a feudal lord, or in this case a warrior under the jarl.
  2. You're closer than you know, real life Bretons are natives of Brittany in north western France. The name means "little britain" because they're the descendents of celts who fled over the sea from Britain when the Anglo-Saxons pushed westwards and took over their land. Some of them still speak their distinctive celtic language (hard to know how many because the French state doesn't recognise any language other than French within its borders) Oh I heard something about that. I remember I was looking up Breton lore questions on google and forgot to write skyrim in the search bar and it brought me to some page talking about Breton language in France. Was really confused haha. Maybe the reason its so hard to easily find a group to represent English is because Skyrim races seem in part to mirror the last days of the Roman Empire. A decaying empire, Germanic tribes in the North, Celts in the west. The English simply weren't around then.
  3. The way that Thane is described IN Skyrim, it seems that all a thane is is an acknowledge a person that is significant to the Hold. Such as a merchant that conducts LOTS of business (generating LOTS of economic activity) in the Hold. Or someone that has done something(s) that greatly benefits the Hold, like a Militia commander. Overall, it mostly felt like a medieval Chamber of Commerce to me. So anyone that is active in multiple holds -- like a merchant operating "chain stores" -- could easily qualify as thane in several holds. Well according to that reasoning, you are right. It's just that I want to be a knight in my next playthrough and the closest thing to being knighted is being a thane so i was hoping to roleplay that the title of thane means something. But again, you could be completely right. Yeah there are a lot of things that require a suspension of disbelief to get through. Thanks for the input. I think you bring up a good point about this being a special situation. It just feels like the thane is swearing loyalty to one jarl and then the next day he goes and helps another jarl. In the extreme case, it would be like helping Ulfric and then Elisif. If being thane is like being a knight, it should be one on one then right?
  4. Thanks for the input. I do have to side with the Bretons overall its just they're small and weak and kind of remind me of celts (which the english invaded and killed). You're right though about the alternate start though, that seems like a really good idea. I think the French aspect is a bit of a problem but the fact that the English were for all intents and purposes norman french from 1066 until about the 1300s when they began to develop their own identity, isnt a big deal. So yeah sounds like Breton makes the most sense in that regard. You see, I was thinking of the English after the Normans, when they began to develop their own identity and english began making a real comeback as the language of the English people. So it winds up being this awkward half-breton half nord identity that I can't pinpoint. Thanks for the input though. I just don't know if I can do it as a Nord though with all these Scandinavian motifs and people calling me kinsman. I just checked out the mod and it seems nice but unfortunately it is not compatible with requiem. But I think I will save it for when I do a playthrough without requiem. Thanks for the suggestion!.
  5. Isn't a thane in direct service to a jarl? So having more than one jarl to follow would be wrong then right? Or is a thane just a status bestowed upon you? A sign of a famous person or friend of a jarl?
  6. I want to make a British knight type character based of Richard III or maybe another Plantagenet King. Which race should I use? Breton- Sounds like British, based on the celts but is sometimes seen as a microcosm of western medieval europe with its feudal system, several kingdoms, royal families, etc... Seems perfect but Bretons do not seem to be cut out for being knights lore wise and they're kind of small and squishy. It's only an issue for me because I use requiem where race kind of matters for class. Imperial- IMO best for a knight build with their starting skills and in requiem they get half sprint costs, but they seem to be based on Romans, but with the East Empire Trading company and their British accents, are they possibly also based on the English? Also, can Imperials have blonde hair and blue eyes and pale skin? Nord- Based on Scandinavian raiders like Vikings but they can also represent the Germanic tribes in general, of which England owes its name to (Anglo-Saxons). But Nords seem really simple culturally and not ones who would buy into knighthood and stuff like that. Which race do you think represents the Medieval English people the best? Post William the Conqueror but before The Tudors. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Thank you very much for the information. I didn't know that about the Colovians and Nibenese. If the Colovians have a nord mixture then they really are a parallel to today's Spain, Portugal, Northern Italy, because they were heavily influenced by Germanic tribes but speak a latin language. And I don't know how to mix Asia in there but on my next playthrough that gives some great ideas for an descendant of an akaviri soldier who idk reforms the blades or something. The possibilities are endless.
  8. If Imperials seem to be inspired by the Roman Empire, which encompassed what is now Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece etc... Would an imperial based more on one of those countries still be lore-friendly? Especially if he were speak the same language and be from Cyrodiil? I actually had this idea to create an Imperial based on a UFC fighter named Vitor Belfort. He is Portugese but his ancestry is Greek and French (I'm thinking father is a Breton and mother is an imperial so he is racially an imperial but has a breton sounding name). The guy is seriously religious and talks about god a lot so i thought he might be an interesting fit in the Civil War which deals with religious freedom. So would a half-Breton half-Imperial legionnaire named Vitor Belfort who believes in Talos as much as the Nords do be lore-friendly? Would Imperials with Spanish or Greek names be lore friendly?
  9. LOL I just saw this thread again. Thanks for the answer man. This mod has 1 hat thats a bit like the hat i wanted but no cigar.
  10. I was wondering if there is a mod that allows followers to ride horses without you having to ride your own horse. Kind of like the nobleman encounter and his bodyguards. One guy on a horse, the rest on foot.
  11. A mod where you can raise armies? I know that there is a mod where you can become a count, I was wondering if you could have wars between the counts? Any mods out there like that?
  12. Like in dark souls, you can choose to use both your hands to hold your sword, doesn't have to be a greatsword. In oblivion there was a mod that did this called unnecessary violence. It had a grip switch feature.
  13. Yes I like immersion because I like having a consistent backstory that follows me the entire time. It makes character creation more fulfilling and gives the character the personality that keeps me playing instead of deleting him after a day or two. I guess I carried away sometimes lol. @notmyhome Thanks a lot for those suggestions. I do feel giving up one's humanity is not what a samurai would do. I actually really liked your crazy suggestion that he was expelled with Alduin. It kind of has this Asian vibe about destiny or fate. And I think the issues with the lore will be minimal. Being a hero of a prophecy kind of sounds promising. Although, just like with being frozen, feels a bit like a cop out. If I can't come up with anything else though, I will probably go with this one. @dennis20014 Thanks for understanding! And thanks for the suggestion although, I am not that big of a fan of the Ashen race. The females look good but the guys seem a bit underdeveloped and less Asian. That's just me though.
  14. I decided to make a samurai character but I cannot come up with a backstory for his origin. Besides time travel, there doesn't seem to be a way to have a samurai survive to the era that takes place in. The men of Akavir died a long time ago and there aren't other Japanese based human races in Tamriel. I was originally thinking that someone (like an old Blades agent) used an elder scroll to go back in time and bring an Akaviri Samurai back to rebuild the blades/stop Alduin. But I don't think Elder Scrolls work that way. Also if an Akaviri samurai were to be in the present, would he be able to speak Tamriellic or whatever the common language is? or would he be unable to communicate?
