Every time I've had the dark face bug, the solution hasn't been to regenerate facegen data (although I've no doubt that this is occasionally the solution). The issue has been a conflict between mods. Recently I installed WICO and then Bijin Warmaidens. After getting the dark face bug on Aela and checking things out in SSEEdit, I discovered that a WICO patches was getting loaded after Bijin Warmaidens and this was the cause of the bug. Moving the patch above Bijin Warmaidens in the load order resolved it, without any need to regenerate facegen data. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what is happening in most dark face bug instances. In which case, the correct solution is to sort out load order. In cases where facegen data needs to be regenerated, I think doing so is still a better solution than running scripts repeatedly against every on-screen NPC.
