  1. The Skyrim CK can overwrite textures.

Is the other armor using an esp file?

If so, load that in CK and have a look at the item's armor addon. There's the file path to the nif and an edit button. Click that and you can not only change the model but the textures aswell. (To do that the texture must be set up as a TextureSet in CK.)

I'm not saying you need to change anything, just look if that's the cause of the texture change.

Edit: D'oh, how did I end up in the New Vegas forums? Forgive my abscend mindedness and forget everything I said. Apologies.

  2. Thanks! And sorry you don't like it. But as I said I'll stick to it for now to get something done.

I won't promise anything but depending on reactions (and if I'm still having fun doing it) variations might be possible. At least technically.

I half expect "unique beast races" to be done before that, though. And digitrade feet (with animations ?) would be so cool.

Minor Update: The feet aren't body parts but armor addons. Who would have known. -.-

So, finally looking in the right place it was as easy as changing a file path. Hopefully. i still have to test everything.

But first I'm unwrapping the khajiit over again, hopefully making it compatible with the vanilla texture. (Which still looks crap.)

  3. See, that's the reason why I hate to open WIP threads.

I'm not on a schedule here.

As a matter of fact I planned to get the CK work done but it turned out to be a bit more complicated than replacing the path for the nif. I don't remember Oblivion or Morrowind having "BodyPartSet"s (or what was it called?). And those still don't show which feet the race is using. Hopefully I can learn how to do that from another race mod.

But than I got sidetracked and visited the Illiac Bay.

You never lost a whole weekend to gaming without planning to, right?

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. I did not abandon this. I just stopped doing "anything but this" in my spare time.

    @Derok:

I don't think I want to start over with the argonian feet :/

As for the textures I could see this mod having a vanilla-texture and a custom-texture version. I should probably do the vanilla first instead of getting caught up in texture making. *sigh*

    @roland: One thing at a time ;)

  4. This started as a request by Danidragon here.

I was intrigued by the idea of bringing back the unique feet beast races had in Morrowind but without the hassle of recreating every piece of footwear or adding new animations.

So I had to try. (I'm only modeling for three months now, so bodyparts was/is a hugh project.)

I did the first ingame test yesterday, so now I'm confident enough to open a new topic for it. And anyways the other topic is a bit crowded with all kinds of ideas.

Oh, right, just in case (and cause I had to ask wikipedia)

plantigrade = walking on the whole foot

digitrade = walking on the toes (Morrowind style). There's an awesome looking mod in the works for that, search for "unique beast races" if you don't know it.

    Alright, pictures.

Sharpend the argonian's claws a bit:

Unwrapped the khajiit feet using the vanilla texture. it's not looking good :/

The texture is blurry to begin with and gets stretched on my model.

The Cover Khajiit mod has some nice detail, but I still had stretching problems. (No, I would not include the textures should I ever release this.)

First ingame screen! And yes, I noticed the gap at the ankle ;)

That's vanilla texture in case I confused you. And the yellow texture on the claws is only a placeholder.

Ok, so I thought about doing my own texture. Luckily there's some free stock photos of fur on the innernets ;)

Without further editing, it looked like this:

    http://img7.imagebanana.com/img/py0fdrxo/Blender_20120324_151651.jpg

That's a good point to start, don't you think?

With a little luck I can hide the seam where it meets the full body texture in the fur pattern ;)

Now, if you are knowledgable about skyrim textures, I got a few questions:

I'm not sure about the _msn.dds. What's the difference to _n.dds? I remember seeing a tutorial about how to do _msn.dds, I just can't find it anymore.

    What's _sk.dds for?

    Any help is appreciated! :)

Currently I'm testing the feet by simply replacing all female feet.

This happend when I went to skyrim to have a look:

    http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/t6264bdh/Skyrim_20120324_155351.jpg http://img7.imagebanana.com/img/zl69jbap/Skyrim_20120324_155538.jpg

So apparently the textures get overwritten. But, oh well, I have to make the khajiit use a separete model, so a separete texture should be no problem. It's only I wasn't in the mood for CK work today.

Buuuuut I successfully got rid of the gap for female khajiit size 0.

Oh and any input on the question of whether to use vanilla textures or make new ones would be appreciated.

Using vanilla textures would allow for the usage of texture replacers, but I would have to fiddle with the UV map.

New textures leave me with the questions mentioned above.

Ok, that's it for now. More to come...

    ...next weekend.

  5. @danidragon

Oh cool, I didn't know about the Argonian Beautification for Oblivion. Why didn't I use that back when I was playing Oblivion?

I think I can draw some inspiration from that one. Tbh I thought the argonian claws looked a little... ah.... less intimidating compared to what I did for the khajiit. So yeah, that might still change. But as I got little time for modding during the week it will take some time.

And you are right about the open shoes, I already thought about that aswell, but let's do this one step at a time, right?

  6. Yep, they seem to be popular. :D

Actually, what's with Armed to the teeth? I'd expect that after the (one handed) sheath animation is finished you would see your off hand weapon somewhere on your character's body.

I meant to try that mod for days now, but I'm playing more blender than skyrim lately. :whistling:

  7. @Danidragon:Thanks :) I worked on it some more.

One problem I see are the various sliders. For the body weight I need to adjust the models to the slim and heavy versions as well as the genders. Otherwise there's a gap at the ankle. So thats four models for one item you see ingame. (Same goes for armor and clothing)

Than there's the skin tone slider. I have no idea how that works. There's only one texture. And I don't want a seem at the ankle where it borders the body texture.

Oh yeah and the normal map. I can use the plugin for gimp, but the normal maps generated by that one do not look like the vanilla ones. I have no idea what's the diffrence.

I obviously need to read some more tutorials.

So many ways this can still fail.

@elseagoat: That's a neat idea actually. And a weresabrecat for the khajiit. I'd like if someone would do that

Did you try searching for werewolf retextures? Iirc there were a few out there.

Is it just me or does the argonian one look like a chicken's foot? o.0

  8. They did that in Morrowind. If the stuff you sold them was better than their own, they would put it on instead of adding it to the trader's chest to resell it. (So no buying those items back.)

That included helmets. Really, it looked ridiculous. I used to use a mod that made them not wear items I sold them.

  9. nope. :D

way too much detail (i.e. beyond my skill atm)

    not lore friendly

I'm not the one who started this topic, I will not do everything people put in here.

I got a bazillion ideas of my own and way to little time.

Still I think this topic should remain as a general pool of ideas.

  10. Yep, I remember seeing that one before. It really does look awesome. And I like the Morrowind-style.

But those are not plantigrade feet (walking on the whole foot rather than on the toes only).

I like Danidragon's drawing a lot and I like the concept. That way beast races could have unique feet but would still fit into normal footwear. :)

If you search for "fem feet" on the nexus you'll get an excellent human feet replacer. So there's really little point in me doing it again. Apart from learning, I guess. ;)

  11. I know that you probably have a lot on your head right now,and I might be not the only one who did this, but could you make new plantigrade feet for beast races ?

Like this ? I know it isn't a masterpiece, but I hope it'll do if you decide to consider my request.

    http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t490/Danielo556/footscrap090.jpg

Yes I actually drew it :P

    http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/tgx2rt8g/Blender_20120317_163243.png

Yes I actually modelled it :P

Stupid toes take forever. And they are obviously not done yet. Still look a bit crooked and the claws are missing.

But so far my attempt at human toes took the longest. A whole day for the toes only and they still look... grauslich. Sigh.

You know, I could have finished that other mod I'm working on. But when I found your drawing, I had to give this a try.

Please don't expect any release. Normally I don't show wip pictures. I hate to raise hopes, than get stuck and never finish it. But hopefully noone reading this thread will excpect anything from it anymore.

One good thing: I'm really pleased at how the ankle turned out. With only two month of casual modeling experience, I still did better than Bethesda:

    http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/yu1fsz04/Blender_20120317_165006.png

Yep, that's the foot. The toes get painted on.

  12. If I'm not mistaken the nodes can be switched to be visible in first person in the races entries. At least I remember stumbling across something like that in CK. I have not tested it though.

If I'm right this would be another reason to come to an agreement (and make it widely known) so that people who work with races can switch whatever nodes are agreed to show rings/claws/bracelets and people who create those items don't need to mess with races. That should avoid a head of possible and unnecessary conflicts.
