I just built a new computer (i5 2500K, GTX 560, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7 32 bit) and installed Fallout 3, the latest update from Bethesda, and an outdated version of GFW to fix the missing dll bug. At first I had no problems, and played for several hours at fullscreen 1920x1080 on all max settings. Then, I updated GFW for another game and signed in. After doing that, the game would freeze sporadically, and the only way I could get out was to ctrl+alt+delete and kill Fallout 3 with task manager. I eventually determined that this always occurred when I crippled an enemy without killing it. If I crippled it upon death or killed it without crippling it, nothing went wrong. The game would also freeze at random sometimes when I was just wandering around and scavenging, but it wasn't repeatable. I changed the graphics settings, played in windowed 1440x900, closed everything else, and paid close attention to CPU/GPU temperatures, but nothing helped or was out of the ordinary. So, any suggestions? I searched around but couldn't find any similar queries about this here or elsewhere.
