Okay I have reinstalled Skyrim and the mods that I wanted to use (and some new ones). So far, the game is running quite stable and no crashes to desktop at all.
-
That's a lot of mods. You have made no mention of BOSS. My first bit of advice would be to download BOSS and ensure that your mods have the correct load order. If that does not resolve it, you might have to go through the tedious procedure of turning your mods off and testing them one by one.

Thank you, I will try that.

Right it CTD again, but this time not straight to desktop but rather I had to restart my computer. I am going to give up playing Skyrim until I get my computer upgraded - I'll just clean install everything. I have a hunch that Dawnguard is to blame (I never experienced a single crash until Dawnguard) and to think I paid for it.
-
I have no problem with the quality at the moment, to be honest. Yes, shamefully this computer is a little dated. Over the summer, I will be investing money and getting a nice few upgrades: Greater RAM, SSD. better graphics card etc Thank you, I will also do this. :)

Okay final update. I was just able to play Skyrim for about 40 odd minutes without any problems. I would suggest that it thus works :) Thanks, you have been great!
-
<p>It still crashes more regularly than it should do. I just got about ten minutes game play from it before it CTD. I have even turned down the graphical settings from high to medium.</p> <p> </p> <p>EDIT:<br /> I searched the forums and found that turning down the shadow to low detail apparently helps. I did that also and the game still crashed to desktop after about ten minutes play.</p>

What I will do is play it tomorrow morning with those settings. If it does not crash, then you are my dragonborn lord and Skyrim savour. Again, thank you for your help by the way. It is very much appreciated :)

Both files contain fMeshLODLevel2FadeDist=10000000.0000 fMeshLODLevel1FadeDist=10000000.0000 If this is the problem, it is being produced by the game itself.

Okay, I took your advice and deleted both ini files and allowed the game to replace them. I then played the game, within about a minute, the game crashed. Here are the files: Skyrim.ini SkyrimPrefs.ini
-
Sometimes, if you have a below spec rig, tweaking the ini settings might help if you need to do that just to sustain playable framerates (I did this quite a bit when I was playing Skyrim with my old 512mb GPU). However, most user do not know and need to understand that the default ini values are optimized for 'stability', and tweaking some ini settings to 'excessively high' values either to improve 'performance' or to get rid of minor graphic glitches like distant LOD 'pop-in's' is basically demanding the game engine handle a workload that it may not be designed for. I've seen some of Gopher's videos and he does some of this himself, but quite frankly, it's just not a good idea and especially if you are experiencing stability issues. Given that your rig is probably not as powerful Gopher's gaming PC, it's may very well be incapable of handling those sorts of settings (on top of the fact that this is already stressing the game engine beyond normal parameters). Aside from the 2 lines I quoted, you have a number of other ini tweaks. So, try going back to default in settings and see if your game stabilizes, even slightly. The quickest way to do this is to backup and delete your current ini files, then let the game generate new ones on next launch. My set-up may not be fantastic but it is good enough to have played Skyrim on high detail for about a year. The problem of crashes occured post Dawnguard installation only. I never experienced a crash or even lag before Dawnguard. I still don't experience lag, just crashes. I will, however, take up your suggestion of default and see what happens. I will do this tomorrow morning and will update you on the results. Thank you for your assistance, by the way, it is appreciated.

Will do: Skyrim.ini SkyrimPrefs.ini Shouldn't be the graphics at all. I have been playing Skyrim since the game came out. The crashes are more recent (post installing Dawnguard). I will try playing it in a lower detail to see what happens.

Apologies, my mistake. Yes, I meant TES5Edit. What I originally meant to say was that I used boss to reorder and TES5EDIT to clean. I have made no modifications to the ini files themselves. By BOSS logs do you mean the first page when it loads? If so it is below: Skyrim.esm Active Update.esm Active Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}} Dawnguard.esm Active Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}} HearthFires.esm Active Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp Active Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}} Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp Active Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}} Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp Active

I played Skyrim again and although there was no lag, I still have the crash to desktop problem. The order of my mods are: Skyrim.esm ActiveUpdate.esm ActiveDawnguard.esm ActiveHearthFires.esm ActiveUnofficial Skyrim Patch.esp ActiveUnofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp ActiveUnofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp Activekeeperpossiblefix.esp That is the exact load order. I have used BOSS to clean up the mods. I still get a CTD.
-
Update: I have used the TESEdit software to clean up the various mods that I have used and the CTD has ceased. The game is still somewhat laggy, however. This may be my computer as it has been on continuously for some days now, downloading things. So I will give my computer a wee rest later on, and will play again. Update will follow.

I completed the Soul Cairn ages ago. I got the keeperfix mod which resolved the issue. Recently, the game has been crashing for no reason that I can determine. Completely random.
-
Okay I have installed the patches the order is now: Skyrim.esm Update.esm Dawnguard.esm HearthFires.esm Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp keeperpossiblefix.esp I have tried playing Skyrim with keeperpossiblefix enabled and disabled with the above load order, but the game crashes but not to desktop. It just lags incredibly, then stops working.
-
Yes I have. This all started within the Soul Carin. I was able to get a mod which prevented major crashes while within the Soul Cairn but since then, it has occasionally CTD. Excellent, thank you for your advice. I do love how it is called vanilla Skyrim XD Seriously though, thanks for the advice. I will get around to installing these later today and if they fail or succeed I will post on this thread. Thank you.

Hey guys, I am starting to experience some issues with CTD. It started when I installed Dawnguard (surprise). I was able to get a mod which resolved the issue, at least for a while. I tried playing Skyrim again today and it began crashing to desktop after about 5-10 minutes of play time. Not entirely sure why it is doing this or what I should do (without losing my save). Here is some info: Mods: Skyrim.esm Dawnguard.esm HearthFires.esm Update.esm keeperpossiblefix.esp ^^ In that load order System Information: OS: Windows XP Professional Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Core Processor 5600+ , MMX, 3DNow (2CPUs) Memory: 2560MB RAM DirectX: 9.0c GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Video Driver: I have tried disabling Dawnguard and Hearthfire and keeperpossiblefix without help. Any advice would be most welcome.

Are those mods I linked to any good? Any better ones?

I should probably add that I haven't really used many mods in the past, at all. I used a couple in Skyrim to repair some crash issues in relation to the Soul Cairn but that's about all.

Hey guys, I want to get back into playing Oblivion after a few years playing Skyrim and Team Fortress 2. So, quick question: What mods should I be downloading to get the best experience? I currently have the Game of the Year Edition of Oblivion. It currently has no mods.
