  1. In the case of modding, it's just common sense and good manners - no need to get lawyers involved. If you're going to use the work of another modder, it's a no-brainer that you should *ask* him first, and give proper credits. If in doubt, ask your mom. A lot of modders even save you the trouble and give a blanket license to re-use their work, again with proper credit. Just be sure to check their readmes. Again, that's for re-using modded content. Original content from Fallout or any other game is a no-no. Bethesda can and will send their lawyers at you, and whatever hosting site you use (cos the Nexus won't have you)
  2. In Oblivion we could use durability to balance that: - Glass was relatively light and highly efficient, but brittle - Dwemer on the other side of the spectrum, super durable but heavy too. Of course, re-introducing it isn't the way to go in Skyrim. We want to add to the player's tactical choices, not to harrass him with micromanagement. Anyway, I want Dwemer power armor.
  3. To the mods. I'm starting this thread to push for the unbanning of user 2pac4eva7 (reference post) I do not mean to be rude to anyone, and I do realize that this is not the normal procedure for unbanning, hoewever exceptional times - or in this case exceptional people - do call for exceptional measures. 2pac has been a very active modder since Oblivion, and is now doing pioneering work in modding skyrim. He was originally banned almost a year ago for a relatively small offence: insulting another member in the comment thread to one of his own mods. It was regrettable, but it happens. God knows I find it hard not to lose patience working tech support - supporting a mod is the same except you're not getting paid, or even thanked half as much as you deserve. He has since then apologized several times for the offence. 2pac is now working hard at modding Skyrim. He managed the very first successful modification of a Skyrim body mesh (a port from one of the custom bodies from Oblivion) as a proof of concept, and is now well on the way to a new and fully original female body for Skyrim. Not only that, but he is breaking ground for other modders to build on. Yet not only is he prevented from sharing his work and techniques here, he has even been IP banned from the Nexus sites - which prevents him from keeping abreast with the latest modding news and tools. I do believe the sanction is way too harsh for the offence and I hope many fans of TES games will join me in requesting his unbanning.
  4. Meh, I don't get it. Why would anyone ever want to convert any oblivion or morrowind original content to Skyrim? Practically everything in these two games has been re-done and massively improved by modders. If you're going to convert anything, convert the meshes, textures and stuff made by modders. It's much higher quality and is likely to fit in better with Skyrim's level of detail, and since it's original content made by modders, it's their permission you need to ask, not Bethesda's - and the guys in the modding community usually keep their lawyers on leash too. OTOH conversion won't be *that* straightforward, you've got some Skyrim quirks like object space normal maps to deal with, and it gets harder when you get into armor, bodies or hairs.
  5. Acutally a possible solution has been posted in the "play as a dog" thread. You need to open up the human and dragon meshes in separate nifskopes, with the latest nif.xml, and copy the 3rd person camera nodes from 1 to the other. Will try this tonite when I'm back from work.
  6. The Japanese modders usually operate on a 2-3 year time lag getting into new games. But once they do you can expect some seriously depraved content.
  7. I think the HUD is better left alone for now.. it looks like Bethesda learned a thing or 2 from previous HUD mods, and adopted the "there when you need it, invisible when you don't" philosophy. That's good enough for me. All the rest is a tragic mess: Inventory, spell management... I mean, come on, the first Legend of Zelda had better inventory management than that. Prospective UI modders really need to do a clean slate with that UI and come up with something fresh, especially something that minimizes the amount of scrolling one has to do. Also bring back from previous games / mods: - Hotkeys to equip specific spell / items combinations. - Sorted containers - Batch storing, retrieving, sorting In a game where the player is encouraged to collect and hoard all kinds of crafting components, inventory management needs all the help it can get!
