  1. currency is just for simplicity, there is no such thing an "no currency" currency is whatever people are willing to trade for... fo rus its a bunch of worthless paper

Try bartering at your local restaurant or market to feed yourself. Try bartering for building supplies at your local hardware store...

  2. Civilization is a good thing (IMO). Anarchy + human nature = chaos = bye bye to civilization.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchy

1 - "No rulership or enforced authority."

2 - "Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder."

3 - "A social state in which there is no governing person or group of people, but each individual has absolute liberty (without the implication of disorder)."

4 - "Absence or non-recognition of authority and order in any given sphere."

3 is an interesting thought experiment (considering the comment pertaining to an "implication of disorder"), but completely impossible to achieve in reality. Human beings seek to better their own lives, and if they can do so at the expense of others, history has proven (many, many times over...) that this is what happens. Civilization (such that humans have a reasonable chance to pursue happiness vs. struggling just to survive) needs a functional Justice system. A Justice system requires some form of authority, and necessarily, that authority would need the power to infringe on the "absolute liberty" of people, breaking the anarchy dream.

Without a justice system, trade halts, currencies become useless, necessities of life (food, clothing, shelter...) go up for grabs and the strong prosper, the weak become victims (no freedom for them)... cities become death camps (starvation...). Once the "strong" run out of victims and plunder, they resort to animalistic pack behaviour... turning on each other. This may take years, decades or centuries, but I think the pattern is quite easy to see. History has many examples.

Note: I didn't read your linked essay... I just skimmed a couple points.

    Authority and Autonomy -

Looking in the wrong place (theory vs practicality) and assumes a particular set of values (absolute freedom as an impeachable goal). "...the only reasonable political belief for an enlightened man." Arrogance in the extreme. Trading a compromise in liberty for civilization to exist is reasonable.

    Democracy -

In all forms of democracy there are shortcomings, but it generally seems the best of the alternatives. Picking apart the failings is useless without a choice for something better.

The Quest for the Legitimate State - "...a viable form of political association which will harmonize the moral autonomy of the individual with the legitimate authority of the state."

The ability to leave a jurisdiction if you don't like the laws agreed upon by its population is pretty much mandatory here. In that way, every individual can choose where the trade-off between freedom vs. civilization is to their tastes. The forms of government that fail to meet the needs of their population shrink and die. Prosperous forms of government thrive. Granted, the psychological tools of patriotic propaganda and culture are strong barriers to this type of migration, but such is life.

  3. Being a parent is one of the things I might say is actually a true human birthright. Raising a child however... that's more of a honour and privilege.

About the only thing I would even consider in this area would be a continual check on competence, as a way of protecting children from the bad things that can arise from bad parenting, with the penalty being the revocation of custody. This would provide a motive for bad parents to improve, to reunite their family. The problem with this idea is what you do with the children removed from bad homes... I'd guess that state run homes / foster care might sometimes be worse than broken homes.

  4. Stepped out of the sewers and had the pop-up message saying that I could do anything I wanted. Opened the map and saw the size of the world and was almost intimidated at all the possibilities. ;) Started walking around, almost died when a dog ambushed me after hiding in the grass... actually dying after running into a bandit wielding a big axe, then being impressed with the combat system that actually takes some player skill / tactics.

First time encountering a minotaur... sneaking though a ruin and heard the deep grumbling breathing... my heart starts racing in anticipation of a tough battle. Seeing the hulking brute in the distance before it spots me... (the actual battle was a letdown in comparison to what I was expecting though... turned out to be nothing special).

More recently, one-hit sneak-attack killed a zombie in an Ayleid ruin and its body landed nicely in one of those cubby-hole graves.

  5. Ooooh! I just remembered that I once had a CD with tons of fan created maps for the original DOOM. Just thinking of that makes me feel... http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4497/oldt.gif

I'm still downloading and playing these as if they're brand-new (and to me many of them are).

You're only as old as you feel!

Heh... True true. It seems like a few lifetimes ago though.

  6. While I agree that such an idea sounds like it might be popular with the Player community, I doubt that (at least some of) the modding community would be so joyous. Some mod authors (parlor folks in the Cathedral vs. Parlor debate) release their work based on certain terms and conditions. Having a site policy that in any way bypasses / ignores such wishes risks alienating those modders. Dangerous and disrespectful.
  7. Why bother? Because it's worth it. You only need to hit the jackpot once.

I guess Im just not a lucky person when it comes to that sort of thing. I sure as hell havent hit the jackpot yet. But it seems you have, lucky you haha

lol... I wish. I'll never give up hope though. I know the reward will be worth any amount of pain. I've seen the smile of a jackpot winner... 1000 yard stare... priceless.

  8. My standard for who I consider to be a "friend" is pretty high, so I would say none. I have had many friendly acquaintances over the years though, but never taken it into real life.
  9. First downloaded mod... hmm. I remember using mods (custom SP maps) for the original Half-Life, but I think I got those off of PCGamer CD's that came with the magazine (although I might have downloaded a couple...).

I believe my first major venture in mod use was with the original Dungeon Siege though (SiegeNetwork). I tried some mods (including some cheaty ones) then found Xaa's amazing Lands of Hyperborea siegelet. Played that one way too much. ;)

  10. Thanks for all the responses.

Are Infamy and bounty the only stats that people/Gods react to? Are stats like "items stolen" and "trespasses" just for fun like the "jokes told" stat? I didn't try to capture the Greyfox because I wasn't sure if the game would let you turn him in and I didn't want to be branded a thief.

I think that after you steal enough items your infamy will raise

Sounds like the TG's quest Independent Thievery (which gives Infamy as you fence items...).

  11. If you steal / trespass without getting caught, there are no in-game consequences (AFAIK). Those stats are just listed for informational purposes.

Murder has consequences though... even if you aren't caught.

The factions you join also affect NPC reactions.

  12. I'm running Oblivion on a Vista Laptop, so it is possible (Default install path, and it was working before I disabled UAC).

Are you sure that you're starting the OblivionLauncher, and not Oblivion.exe?

Yeh, I was using Oblivion.exe. OblivionLauncher does get me started correctly. I loaded OBMM, but checked no mods, until I get vanilla working. I still get the other problems though. Anybody else have any ideas why my music doesn't play on the map screen and why the game stops when I select NEW game? Thanks for your replies.

About the only thing I would suggest is playing with the Options (graphics / sound settings...) to see if you can find something that works.

  13. Mine starts with a University nickname... after some drunken mimicking of an SNL skit I was dubbed the Landshark. Years later, when playing an cRPG I wanted an RPGish sounding name, and there were commercials for a cheezy Kevin Sorbo movie called Kull the Conqueror (with the right setting, compared with the RPG). So, Shark + Kull = Sharkull (pronounced shar-cool).

Later on (2005?) when I wanted to come up with an online user-name for a gaming forum I was joining, I quickly googled Sharkull, it came up blank so I had my name set. Now when I google this name there are 36,000 results, the vast majority (including the top few) have nothing to do with me... so much for being unique. :P
