No, absolutely it doesn't. Thank you for your willing attitude to help. Luckily, for my sanity's sake, I found the culprit. Wasn't mod related at all. Because of that, it took me 20 hours to find the issue. LMAO I made probably a dozen different installs and Vortex profiles all for something completely unrelated. It happened at the perfect time too. Right as I hit the mod limit, so that completely had my attention. Apparently you cannot put Spaces in the controller config, or else, your game will be stuck as a background process and never launch. The reason I put Spaces in the controller config stems from a habit I have when I'm self documenting things in text editors. Sometimes Tab doesn't line things up perfectly with the upper or lower lines so I just add a couple Spaces. This is what I made my config look like so the lines would all line up vertically. Because of this, my game would not launch. This is what the same edit has to look like so the game can launch. Wasn't all bad though. I did learn how to created merged patches with zEdit and I've halved my plugin amount.

Yeah I had already done that as soon as I noticed I was over. "Noticed I had gone over 255 plugins, so I removed the Ember and Torch mods as well as Zim's Immersive Artifacts which had around 20 Active plugins since I didn't combine them. Super optional mod for me, so I just uninstalled it. I'm now at 230 Active plugins." I've only been testing, and the save I've been playing on was just for testing. I'm not worried about losing it since I was going to start a new game anyway. My issues is that even after removing mods with plugins, being quite a bit under the limit now, I'm still not able to launch the game. I have no load or missing masters errors. Also, I think the game version I listed above is incorrect, was looking at the wrong thing when I typed it. I have the newest version from Steam.

Date: August 18th, 2021. SKSE version: 2.0.19 Game version: 1.5.97 (Steam) Vortex version: 1.4.15 Stable .NET Framework version: 4.8 Nvidia Graphics driver: 471.68 Load order txt attached. Using newest versions of all mods. It's been a few years since I played modded Skyrim, so it's all on a new drive from the past and everything is freshly installed as of 5 days ago. I've modded a lot in the past, so I knew how to do everything and knew what I wanted. Spent a couple days modding and testing making sure everything I saw was working properly. The previous day I was modifying the controlmap.txt config since I'm doing a 3rd person, controller playthrough, using modern animation mods. I would add a couple mods here and there during testing. That night before bed, I changed from "The Grass Your Mother Warned About" to "Veydosebrom", re ran TexGen and DynDOLOD for a final time before I started a new game since I was done testing. Ran the game, everything was good. Went to bed. I do leave my PC on overnight so I never turned it off. This morning before playing, I remembered I noticed some issues with campfire and ember textures, so I installed Embers XD & HD, and Smoking Torches and Candles. I must have been around 252 active plugins before I installed these, and after I did install them I went over 255. I think it hit 257. I didn't noticed this at the time though. These were the final mods for a new playthrough so I wasn't thinking about the plugin limit. I launch the SKSE launcher like normal, it never loads, and I notice the game is stuck as a background task. I've had this happen in the past, so I started trouble shooting. Noticed I had gone over 255 plugins, so I removed the Ember and Torch mods as well as Zim's Immersive Artifacts which had around 20 Active plugins since I didn't combine them. Super optional mod for me, so I just uninstalled it. I'm now at 230 Active plugins. I launch the game again and it still is stuck as a background task. Launching it through the SKSE launcher, Vortex, and the normal game launcher all do the same thing. No amount of googling has helped me find an answer. Everything I can find is form 4 or 5 years ago or from mod shaming Oldrim forum posts. So, I'm stumped. I'm not against a fresh install of the game and mods, but I just don't want to spend a couple hours setting up mod rules again and I'm not sure if that will fix it.

After several days of testing and playing, I've come to the conclusion that this very explanatory post about what I thought was something was just how the game typically acts when it crashes. I've just never seen anyone explain exactly how the game behaves when it crashes. What caused the CTD issue for me was that both borderless and fullscreen were set to true in the ini. Not sure why because I had borderless off in Bethini and allowed it permissions to wright. Manually changing the borderless setting to false fixed my CTD issue. What I assume was happening, was either Task Manager or a Windows Service in the background, was becoming the active window/task over my borderless game. I have not had any CTDs since changing this. Only normal modded game freezes.

That is one hell of a modlist. I can just glance at that and tell you have way too many mods that change NPCs. Half the mods in here conflict with each other.

First, verify the integrity if your game cache through steam. If that doesn't work, it could be your game is detecting a controller plugged in. If you have one plugged in, unplug it and verify again. If that doesn't work, make a copy of, then delete, "ControlMap_Custom.txt" in your install location, then launch the game. If that does nothing, verify again. I've experienced some mods that add certain gear messing with player movement, but I've always been able to fix the issue just by unequipping and re-equipping gear. If you press your auto walk key, Ctrl by default I believe, what happens? If your character does not auto walk, then it's likely not key binding related and rather your character is bugged in place. Use the console to turn off collision, "tcl". If you're able to then move, your character hitbox was colliding with something. What happens when you go into 3rd person camera? Is your character able to rotate? Can you draw and sheath your fists? Try using the "coc" command to force teleport to a different location, it may be related to the "Life Another Life" game cell. If none of this works, then turn off all Plugins using Vortex, make a new character, and start turning back on mods from there. Also, post your mod load order. Preferably paste it in a google doc and share the link here. Your plugin list can be found in "Your user name/AppData/Local/Skyrim Special Edition/plugins.txt"

The "skyrimprefs.ini" you will want to edit is the one in "Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition". The skyrimprefs in your install location is typically never touched. I don't actually know when you want to edit it, but the one the game uses is the one in you Documents. I too use a 1440p monitor, and have the same settings as you in my skyrimprefs.ini in my install location, but as long as the skyrimprefs.ini in your Documents is set up properly, then that is the one the game will use.

"Are you using an actual fullscreen game, or a borderless window, because I haven't experienced what you have, if I get a crash, anything else on my desktop doesn't end up taking over the focus." When reading this, I was 90% certain my game is running in fullscreen. So I double checked my ini settings. Indeed it is set to run in fullscreen, but it is also set to run in borderless. I even have borderless off in BethINI. It may just be my system or this install of Windows that is for some reason making other windows active over what is on my main monitor. Another thing I have noticed that I did not list, is that when I crash, my windows cursor will be on my second screen, like it's not staying in the game, like it's not set to fullscreen. I will have to see how it acts now that only fullscreen is set to true in the ini. Thanks for the comment, glad I caught this.

Skyrim Special Edition Stuttering for No Apparent Reason
AsaHerring replied to DrFog1996's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim SE
Might sound like a dumb question. Are you playing in Fullscreen, windowed, or borderless, and are you using vsync? Depending on your monitor and your nivida display settings, the problem could be vsync is fighting too much screen tearing, which causes stuttering but no frame drops. This can act differently depending on your monitor's refresh rate if you're playing in fullscreen or not, and if you have vsync on or off. I would start by turning off vsync, if it's on, and seeing what that does. If you're getting too much screen tearing with it off, then that's why you're getting the stutter but no frame drops. -
As the title states, I have found my own personal CTD issue. If you are uncertain why your game CTDs, then you may want to start here. However, I do not have a solution. To elaborate, I have recently found out why my game is crashing, not what is causing it or how to fix it. That is why I'm posting here. I have done my research. I have searched this topic for a long time, since the game came out, and more so recently, and I have not found one instance like this before. The reason for my CTDs, to put it simply, is that the Skyrim process will randomly stop being an active process and move to a background process, which causes the game to close soon after. This has never happened to me when launching the game, only while playing. It can happen 5 minutes after playing, or 5 hours after playing. If you search on Google or forums using the words "skyrim" and "background process", every post you see will be about why the OP is not able to launch the game because it is stuck as a background process. I've never had that issue. This only happens randomly after a successful launch. Here is some more information. I use two monitors. My main monitor is 1440p, and my second is 1080p. I typically leave my second monitor on while playing, with Task Manager open. I like to know how my system is running when I'm playing Skyrim. Doing this has helped me in the past resolve issues with the game. Because I do this, Task Manager is the last active program before I launch the game. When my CTD happens, Task Manager becomes the active window and any key I'm pressing is recognized by Task Manager. For example, if I'm plying the game and using the W key to walk forward and the game CTDs, Task Manager will recognize I'm pressing the W key and go to the earliest, alphabetically organized process starting with the letter "W" because it was the last active program. I got lucky today. While I was playing, I happen to be pressing the "S" key on my keyboard when the game CTDed. I look over at my second monitor, and because Task Manager was the last active program, it became the active window and recognized my S key input. It scrolled down the list to the first program that started with the letter S, which was Skryim, and the Skyrim process closed a second later. It had stopped running as an active process and moved to the background process category. When this happens, it does not stay as a background process, it closes. I have 2 main questions. 1. Is this normal behavior for a program that crashes? Do other programs, during crashing, stop being an active program and move to being a background process? I have never thought to look at another program's CTD behavior in Task Manager. If it just stops outright, or if it does what I'm describing. If I'm just describing the behavior of a typical program CTD, then I need to look elsewhere, like at my mods. 2. If this issue has been found before, and it is not normal CTD behavior, then I'm hoping to find insight here. Might the reason my game is CTDing is that, for some reason, Task Manager becomes the active window over Skyrim, and because my key inputs are now going to Task Manager, it causes Skyrim to CTD because of the non-intentional tab out? Maybe the active program switch is being caused by Task Manager itself or another program like the Windows 10 antivirus(Antimalware Service Executable). I've heard for years about issues people have had with Oldrim and SSE tabbing out while using multiple monitors. Not all people crash when tabbing out, but it is common to. I'm not necessarily looking for an exact fix to my issue. I'm more so looking to find out the reason this is happening so that I can search for a fix. System specs/info: Windows 10, latest update. i7-4790k RTX 2060 Super (436.48 driver currently, but still happened on earlier versions) Mobo, usb, audio, etc... drivers are all up to date as of 6 months ago. No 3rd party virus or antimalware programs installed, only Windows 10 Antimalware. Only active programs while playing are Skryim, Task Manager, and Vortex. Thank you for taking the time to look at this post. I'm not asking you to fix my problem, I just thought I would put this info out there.

General confusion about how SSE uses RAM.
AsaHerring replied to AsaHerring's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim LE
I believe I have found the culprit of my RAM issues, unintentionally... It seems that the mod "The People of Skyrim" was causing issues with my game. I do not know how, if it was just poorly optimized or it was conflicting with my game version or other mods, but after uninstalling it I am having no more crashing from RAM building up. Removing the mod did not cause my game to use less RAM, I am still using RAM in the same way, but after uninstalling the mod I can go over 8Gb without crashing. I tested this by installing several Whiterun mods and was able to hit 12Gb of RAM without crashing. I had originally uninstalled the mod because I found out it added several new areas, and added dozens of unwanted trees to the tundra around Whiterun. I had originally installed the mod because I thought it was an NPC mod. I did not like the forest around Whiterun and uninstalled the mod that added all the trees. I did not know the mod added many new areas all around the map and overhauled the major cities. I already have Jk's Skyrim, Dawn of Skyrim, The Great Cities, and a couple others that do that, and I know exactly what they do and I like what they do. I was unfamiliar with the changes made by "The People of Skyrim" and I uninstalled it. Immediately after doing this, I went to Whiterun to see exactly what was removed by uninstalling the mod, and I was met with, after several cells loaded, 10Gb of RAM usage without crashing. It seems that either this mod does not play well with other mods, or it loads things into RAM that maybe shouldn't be? I don't know, I am NOT experienced with how the game engine works. -
General confusion about how SSE uses RAM.

Here is my skyrim.ini, skyrimprefs.ini, enginefixes.ini, and mod list if anyone is interested in looking. https://docs.google.com/document/d/15Dl_wOsvqUEi4ix7Zgl96LOUir-He21aU7Oahdf2QtI/edit?usp=sharing -
I've spent several weeks now doing research looking for a solution, or explanation, to my problem. My issue is that I'm hitting what seems like a RAM usage limit which causes CTDs. I purchased Skyrim on release in 2011, and started modding the game soon after people started making mods for it. This is my first time modding and doing a playthrough of the SSE version after a 4 year break from Oldrim. That is my history with the game. My system specs: i7 4790k RTX 2060 Super 6Gb 16Gb DDR3 2133 Intel SSD 2560x1440 Resolution To explain a little more about what is happening. Upon entering a new cell, my RAM usage tends to gradually increase and does not go down. Towns and Interiors in towns are more severe. A CTD happens when I have used all 6Gb of VRAM and around 8Gb of system RAM. From what I have found on several different posts about SSE Ram usage, is that it is very rare to see above 5Gb of system RAM used depending on how little VRAM you have. For example, in Whiterun, after loading the town and 2-3 Interior Cells, I hit 8Gb of system RAM and crash. I have also done a test where I loaded up the game inside Breezehome(4Gb of VRAM, 2.5Gb of RAM used), so nothing else loaded, then exited into Whiterun, then turned around and went back into Breezehome. Each time I loaded, more and more RAM was used, and repeated this until my game reached 8Gb and crashed. Not sure why loading the same 2 areas over and over would cause so much RAM usage to build up. I am using SKSE64, version 2.0.16. I have verified it is installed properly. Checked SKSE version in game too. I have also looked at posts about MEMORY edits to the ini, which has me very confused. Do I name the ini file "skse.ini" or "skse64.ini"? I see conflicting information between posts on Oldrim posts on and SSE. On the SSE Nexus, there are edited inis you can download, some are "skse.ini" and some are "skse64.ini", both are intended to be used for SSE. Does it even matter? I've had it named both and nothing changed. My skse ini is currently set to: [Memory] defaultHeapInitialAllocMB=6144 scrapHeapSizeMB=1024 I have learned that the SSE version of SKSE no longer uses the ini file like Oldrim did. I am also using "SSE Engine Fixes (skse64 plugin)" I am using BethINI with the BethINI preset and the recommended tweaks. I am using an ENB, which I have learned that ENBs do not have the same effect on RAM usage for SSE as they did for Oldrim. In Oldrim, ENBs/ENBoost allowed for multiple heaps of 4Gb system RAM to be created in order to get past the 4Gb engine limit. But with the SSE 64 bit client that is not needed since Bethesda fixed the engine up a bit. My main heavy mods and textures are as follows: Only 2k texture mods, no 4k. 2k texture mods replacing almost all textures in the game. UNP Female Body Voluptuous Grass + Skyrim Flora Overhaul. Immersive Citizens SE JK's Skyrim, Dawn of Skyrim, and patches. I have a total of 389 mods installed and 283 plugins loaded, according to Vortex, but the ones listed above are the most heavy RAM users I would think. I know I can remove mods, I know that. Compared to other's posts about RAM usage, my game in my opinion is not that more heavily modded than theirs, and in some cases people have much less RAM usage with lower specs while using 4k textures. I don't use any 4k textures. I have two main reasons for this post. To hopefully find a solution to my abnormal RAM usage, and to better understand how SSE works by creating a more recent, relevant topic for RAM usage because there are a lot of outdated posts that no longer are relevant. Because when you try to research this topic, you get forum posts and guides for Oldrim. One last note... I can completely prevent my CTDs while playing by using the "pcb" (purge cell buffer) command before entering a new cell and play as long as I want without CTDs. This takes very little time to do, but it does get annoying having to do this before entering every cell. Thanks for your help!

Cannot believe it's been almost 9 years since release, and no one has made a mod to fix this. I just recently started a playthrough and am having this issue for the first time. No clue if it's mod related or just Skyrim. Done probably all the same research everyone else has. Only piece of advice I can give people who are having this problem. Find a mod, or mods, that overhauls the default homes. Like Elianora's Breezehome. Make sure it's a mod that removes the default modular home upgrades you have to purchase. When you are ready to use your home, use the "unlock" console command on the locked door and it should be ready to use. The inventories inside should not reset. (Optional) If you're feeling guilty for getting a free home, just use the console to remove the appropriate amount of money.

Anyone know where I can download Skyrim Uber Textures?
AsaHerring replied to AsaHerring's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim LE
Wow, that's really funny. Started a modded playthrough of the Special Edition after not playing Skyrim for several years, was looking for an old texture mod that I used to use, couldn't find it, but I did find my own post on not being able to find it! I found this quite funny. Anyway, I found where to download the mod, but the drive I have it downloaded on died, so was hoping to find it again. Ironically, I was searching for an ENB to use on my new playthrough and I was looking at old ENBs I had endorsed for the non SE version. I found the original link to where I had downloaded Uber Textures in the past on the "Docter's ENB" Nexus page. But, that download link no longer works. Hoping someone might see this long dead post and have a link to share.
