There could be various problems.
1. You have body or armor mod that is not installed properly.
This happened to me before my character had no feet texture. this can also happen to meshes.
2. You have the mesh of armor or body that the game wants but is not there. Look in data folder, I'm not sure how yours is, but
my body mesh would be Data\meshes\actors\character\character assets and the armor you start in the beginning of the game would be
Data\meshes\clothes\prisoner
If there are no mesh or they are incorrectly named this can happen.
3. The texture is set as transparent, you have to change the texture.
But maybe more information and we can help you better! -
I'm pretty sure this normal game behaviors. No mods, this happens. The same thing happens if you are 3rd person and walk in front of NPC and try to look at yourself. It's not glitch, but I don't know how to make off-screen bigger.

My problem is I have a lot of random/unpredictable CTDs and it majority of the time is when I press pause menu!

I got it to work on my argonian just by taking the werewolf battle stance and attacks and renaming them for the player's unarmed combat, in fact, but it only works on beast race skeletons, but you can just replace a humans if you want to use it there. But I wouldn't know why it doesn't work for you.
