Hey people, awesome to see the cool discussion taking off! Firstly, I just want to clear up about the cherry picking element. I am eager to find out if any of you, as active members of this community (and/or other communities) feel like this has been the case in the past and if so, were there any noticeable effects when these creators left? @Hey You, would you say that because of the way Beth has approached bringing mods through the CC to console and their current implementation, it’s essentially given a terrible impression to console gamers what mods can actually do for their enjoyment of these older titles? So, would Nexusmods itself be a better example of current monetisation than what is usually assumed as being paids mods in the form of the Creation Club? Or how about the people over at the Race Sim Studio who create and sell their content for racing sims while not being officially licensed/endorsed/contracted by the game developer? Or can anyone think of any other worthy examples?

@FrankFamily thank you for clarifying the definition sources Though you still haven't stated whether you see Bethesda's Creation Club as a means to select from the community, the creators they feel would bring the most benefit to the store (cherry-picking from the community) over that of a monesation of mods practice. @Striker879 and thank you!

@Wolfstorm, you talk about the self-entitled authors who I guess are then funded through their Patreon’s. I don’t suppose you have any active examples? Can someone please state what CK is the abbreviation for so that there’s no misunderstanding in the write up? @Arthmoor, is your opinion on this then essentially “business is business”? @FrankFamily very interesting. Can I ask for your sources on the quotes used or am I correct in thinking they're from Wikipedia? As Bethesda’s own states that the content within the club is “created by… the best community creators” would you say that this is more of a “cherry picking” approach by the developer from the community than that of a monetisation practice? @xrayy do you think there’s perhaps a correlation between such suppression actions and video games as a service becoming more prominent or can you give an example of an older title that this has happened to?

Hey people, Thanks for clicking on this thread! The survey (https://forms.gle/dLRaESyemqHjvWvS9) should take approximately 5 - 10 minutes to fill out. It’s about the video game industry’s attempts to monetise mods and I would love to hear back from as many as possible from the forums. All data will be collected anonymously. I’ve also opened a discussion thread on this topic (https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/8833853-the-video-game-industrys-monetisation-of-mods-discussion/) and openly invite anyone who would like to add more on this to head over there where we can begin a bit more of a debate to see if there is possibly a solution that would benefit all. Massive thank you to anyone who can fill it out!

Completely understand having all that turned off, I do the same though haven't seen the issue you're experiencing  I would suggest perhaps trying another browser but then I couldn't stop myself from thinking about Edge... :nuke:

Just to update this like I said I would, here's the open debate link which has a survey link on it for those who find themselves here and want to know more :) https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/8833853-the-video-game-industrys-monetisation-of-mods-discussion/

Hey people, So firstly, a full disclaimer. I’m a student (here's my newbie post for more on me: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/8744958-hello-from-a-student-researcher/) researching the effects that the video games industry’s current and previous attempts of monetising mods has had on the online community spaces that encourage the creation of this content. I’m hoping to gain a greater perspective on how the community feels about these practices in general, and whether or not there has been any lasting effects from these industry attempts. The reason why I’m doing this on mods is because I love mods. I love trying out the interesting, quirky inventions that members of the community have come up with and I love that games I enjoy playing are actively supported with this wide range of content. With all that said, and sorry for dragging on a little, I would highly appreciate it if we could kick off a discussion/debate on the video game industry’s attempts to monetise mods. What do you think of these practices? Are they good for mods and the community or are they bad? Can you provide any examples of the effect it has had here? Can you propose an alternative? Is there an alternative? Can you make a counterpoint to someone else’s post? Some examples of such practices include: Bethesda’s Creation Club and Cities: Skylines Content Creator Packs. If you know any more, don’t hesitate to add them to the discussion. Any reference excerpts taken from this thread for use within the research will be anonymised. And finally, if any of you could spare a little extra time, about 5 - 10 minutes, and fill out my survey (Survey link removed), I would be hugely grateful. This will not collect any personal data that could be used to identify and connect you with your answers. Edit - Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey, it has now been taken down due to the conclusion of this research.

Massive thank you to @AdPrincipium and @Oblivionaddicted! I'm planning on opening a thread over the next couple of days calling for voluntary interviewees to essentially have a conversation about this topic and their opinion. I'll keep you both in mind and update this newbie thread with a link to the new one once it's live.

Hello everyone, My name is Josh Astbury and I’m a student at the TH Köln, a university in Germany. As the headline says, I’m undertaking a research project analysing the modding community’s opinion on previous and current industry attempts to monetise mods. Before I open any new threads, I wanted to reach out to the moderation team to seek clarification if there were any further guidelines to the ones already available that I should abide by. Unfortunately, the Moderation Team link at the bottom of the forums doesn’t work, so can anyone point me towards someone who could answer this for me? A bit about me, I’m very much an amateur modder but I am a massive user of mods and have loved exploring Nexus for the next interesting addition to my games for years. Incidentally, Nexus and the community here is what inspired my current research project.
