I know you guys commented back in 2010 but this actually solved the issue I was having now in 2014. I made an account just to thank you!! I was getting stuck after selecting the gender at the birthing scene but turning all the graphics up and doing what you did completely solved the problem. Took two days of searching to come across this fix!! THANKS AGAIN!!
