New Windows7 installation, FO3 stuck in 'Detect Hardware' mode

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New to the forum, and new to modding.

I've just done a fresh Windows7 installation and had modded FO3 and modded Oblivion working fine before. I have done the Fallout .ini fix for Windows7.

New Win7 is installed on SSD (C:) drive, and all games now installed on standard HDD (D:) due to running out of space last time on SSD. Oblivion is working fine on fresh Win7 install, but when I try to launch FO3 (using any method), the launcher just keeps going through the 'Fallout will now detect your video hardware' pop-up screen, and when it's detected my hardware and set it to 'Ultra', the game will not start when I click 'Play' - It just keeps going through the 'Detect Hardware' cycle over and over again.

Although both games are now installed on my standard HDD (/D:), things like game saves and .ini files have been installed to my SSD drive (C:) in Users>Home>AppData>>Local folders for Oblivion and Fallout. Could this be something to do with it? Shouldn't everything for each game be in the same drive?

I did 'Move' my My Documents folder to my larger HDD (D:) before installing or modding any of the previous versions that used to work, and when I did the fresh Win7 install to C: drive (SSD), those folders stayed on HDD (D:), and I deleted the new 'My Games' and 'My Documents' folders from the fresh Win7 installation on the SSD drive before installing anything at all. I'm thinking this might also be something to do with the problem?

I hope some of this makes sense to somebody. Apologies if it's a bit confused, but I've tried to offer as much information as possible.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

I have fixed it! I was going to delete this topic, but I don't think you can do that, and this may help others who run into the same issue - should they ever find this thread.

It was due to file structure and custom installation options that I originally chose. This fix worked for me because mine was a fresh / 'empty' Windows7 installation, and I had already backed everything up:

1) I deleted anything and everything to do with the broken version of Fallout3 from my PC - folders, files and everything (some hidden files inside C:\ >> Users >> [Your PC's name] >> AppData >> Local >> Fallout3).

2) I created a new 'Administrator' account via Control Panel, which gave me an intact (and clean!) 'My Documents'/'My Games' (etc) folder structure.

3) I logged-into and installed Fallout3 to the new Admin account using all default installation recommendations, then logged out of my original admin account and completely deleted it using the new admin account to which Fallout3 was now installed.

Maybe you can simply create a new admin account and install to that, but my file and folder structure was a total mess, so I decided to play it safe and start completely from scratch.
