Constant crashing to desktop

I just picked up Oblivion Game of the Year edition, and am having issues like crazy with random crashes. I'm running a Phenom Tri-core processor, with an nvidia 8800 gts 320 mb model with no mods installed. I've tried everything within reason, and a few things not so reasonable to resolve this. Anyone else having this problem?

Crashes are a part of the Oblivion experience. It's the game's way of telling you that you need to take a break.

There will always be some crashes, all we can do is minimize them.

Save often, it will keep the frustration level down.

Anything running in the background can cause a crash. Especially a program that likes to call home, such as an antivirus program that updates without warning, or an instant messaging program.

Start by disabling everything that accesses the internet when you play. that includes the Vonage, Skype, IM, xfire and anything that calls in or out.

Many programs use a auto update feature - such as HP printers (how often does your printer driver need updating?)

MS auto update can cause crashes.

Then look for programs that run in the background, they are stealing time from the game and if they don't give control back quick enough - crash.

MS indexing service, antivirus progs that scan everything in the background, Auto defrag programs, Scheduling programs all steal cycles from the game. Any of these can cause crashes.

After you have cut down the crashes caused by external stuff, start looking at your mods.

You probably won't be able to get rid of all of them, but you can minimize them.

Edit: Here is a 'mod' - actually a .dll file that purports to reduce certain common crashes. I installed it last night and tried it with a mod that crashed a lot - and no crashes in over 2 hours of play.

Appreciate the feedback, but it's gotta be something more than stuff in the background. I was able to run it with everything maxed on my 7800, with one gig of ram before this, while on skype with some friends. this crashing is straight to the desktop, with no error message other than "Oblivion has encountered an error and had to shut down" like every 10 minutes.

Ah ha! New information. You changed something, your video card, and now it works different. What else did you change since it worked without ever crashing?. If you look at the bottom of my previous post, I do have a suggestion that is not related to what else is running in the background.

Re: new video card. Is it the same make and brand of card? did you install the latest drivers? Does you power supply have enough power to support the new card? A weak power supply can cause many problems that look like something else.

As to mods, what mods have you added? What mods have you upgraded? have you changed your load order? If you think the crashes are not related to your other programs, try running the game with no mods for a while. If you still get crashes, It's probably not the mods, and the game without mods runs without crashing "every ten minutes" on over a million other computers.

8800 GTS from Nvidia, formerly an 7800 GTX I believe, and 4 gigs or Ram from 1 gig, running on XP. And as for load order and the like, I haven't installed any mods yet, it's supposedly patched up to the current version according to the Bethesda site, and is so far nothing but problems. Trying a full uninstall, registry sweep, virus scan, and full defrag before reinstalling and trying your fix, and if it still has issues, I'll run it, and post my results afterwards. So far this seems to have alot of coverage on other forums, but the last posts are circa 06, and no fix.

Ok, after a mass performance overhaul on my computer, clean uninstall of everything Oblivion related, several av scans, and, registry sweeps and multiple defraggings, Oblivion is still crashing to desktop at random intervals (usually 5-10 minutes in). I tried installing the OBSE loader, and the weOCPS.dll, and still no difference.
