Animation
All, Is this the forum to discuss character plans? I like to plan a game to max level before I play. Sure, I may change my mind along the way, but I like to pre-plan. I bought Fallout 3 last night and I plan to play it tonight. Here is what I am thinking of trying (a commando/mad scientist type): 02 Intense Training (END)03 Intense Training (STR)04 Comprehension05 Educated06 Toughness07 Demolition Expert08 Strong Back09 Commando10 Finesse11 Demolition Expert12 Sniper13 Silent Running14 Cyborg15 Pyromaniac16 Action Boy17 Better Criticals18 Paralyzing Palm19 Demolition Expert20 Grim Reaper's Spirit The Demolition Expert is more combat than necessity. I'd love Bloody Mess except the description makes it seem visually a little too over the top for me (would love the bonus tho). I'm not really sure about my starting stats. Thanks! Alceister
If you wanted to be a "mad scientist" you probably should choose Nerd Rage.
Animation
I didnt like the look of Nerd Rage. You have to have really low health to get the benefit, and so I'm not sure I wouldnt have the need (psychologically) to simply heal. I think I'd heal myself out of the state. It just doesnt seem worth it. Besides, I dont view my character concept as the freakout/HulkOut type. I'm just wondering really if my skill choices are viable. Thanks! Cotes
Personally, I think I'm no gonna pick Grim Reaper anymore. You really need to go Very Hard for it not to be game-breakingly overpowered, but then you're pretty much helpless when AP runs out.
Alceister
Take a look at the Damage Resistance. When you hit 20% hp you effectively have 40% hp due to the 50% Resistance.
BadlyDrawnRhino
One thing I would recommend is to take educated before comprehension. You can always just carry around any books you find until you reach level 4, whereas getting educated earlier gives you more skill points. Not that you really need more skill points, since you can easily max out all the important skills by the end of the game. But I always take those too. AdamV
Max out intelligence imo. Higher intelligence = more skill points. Very unbalanced but I am guessing you're going vanilla for your first play through
SangRahl
The thing that really stands out to me about your proposed build is that you have high-skill requirement perks in SEVERAL different directions. Honestly, it's best to stick to a specific discipline with each playthrough. (Not to mention, you're going to have to spread out a lot of leveled skill points to reach the minimums needed for the perks...) It's not impossible to reach 100(+) in most, if not all, skills... but not necessarily at the level you need for that line-up. Besides, having a specialized character means that you can possibly get a few more playthroughs from trying new character-types.
Animation
Alce, I know that the DR can stack and get high with Nerd Rage, but it just isnt worth it to me. I played for 6 hours last night and only briefly got low enough for it to trigger. Thanks for the suggestion tho. Meat Axe, Yes, I think I'll be patient and take Educated at level 4 and just save all my books (I still only have the Barbarian Comic) until level 5 (Comprehension). Adam, I've already made my character so its too late to max Intelligence. Still, 6 isnt terrible, and I'll get Educated on my next level up so that I get 19 skill points per level up. It should be enough. SangRahl, I suppose I could be spreading myself a little thin, but I think I will be able to manage. Also, I only intend on one play-through. I've found that I loathe the Hacking and Lockpicking mini-games, so I'm not sure what other characters are really possible anyway. I guess I could make a character that maxes social and heavy weapons asap, and that would feel a little different. I dont think a melee character would be very survivable. So, basically, one play-through ought to do me. It is too bad they dont have a mutant powers system such as found in the Gamma World RPG. Maybe there could be an expansion in a year or two that adds a Mutations System and a Cybernetics system for alternate character progression. Anyway, thanks to everyone for the advice!
