yokoshiwa
I was poking around some of my game folders and found some unpacked weapon models that would look interesting if exported into FO3, but I wonder if doing this is legal or okae... I appears to come with gun movment files too..
Cotes
It's illegal, I believe, though philosphically interesting considering they are based on or are copies of real life designs. So basically everyone needs to start from scratch despite making the exact same thing.
neok182
LEGAL: for your own personal use, never to be uploaded to the public. OR if you use the models as a base and then remodel them on your own (99% of all sites will require proof that you remade them on your own.) ILLEGAL: straight up rips and ports into another game. but this is where it does get fuzzy because technically if you don't make any money off of it then theres not really anything wrong with it. but it's against the rules of the site so you can't do anything like that here. Converters have been around for a lot of games. about a good 60% of the custom cars for GTA San Andras were converted from another game and none of them ever got in any legal trouble. but just in case the nexus does not allow ports. yokoshiwa
Thanks neok182!By remodel you mean basing it on that and redoing the entire thing?
Yoshh
Would anyone be willing to help people with ports then? XD I still play oblivion and there are a lot of models I'd love to see in fallout 3 from various mods. I was wondering if it would be hard to modify the .nif files from those models and port them to fallout3. I don't have any meshing skills, but I can work on them :D (Models, as in armors and weapons mainly)

I don't have any meshing skills, but I can work on them :D (Models, as in armors and weapons mainly) If the meshes from the mods you are referring to are made by other modders without them being rips, there are no legal implications in making a port to Fallout 3 except the author has to give his approval of the port. While the models aren't "retail" products as such, they are still the work of an artist and he will still have to give his consent to the port before any work should be done on it. Porting the meshes is relatively "simple" in the sense that you won't have to make the mesh from scratch, but it still needs rigging to a skeleton and proper NifSkope setup which probably is more difficult than actually modelling the mesh. ;)
neok182
and you can't port anything from the retail copy or DLC of Oblivion it can only be custom works otherwise it's bethesdas property and is not allowed to be ported. redone, yes but not flat out ported. @yokoshiwa: yup. thats what i mean. i'm doing the same right now for a helmet and gun from mass effect. DigitalEternal
I really dont see any 'legality' issues, your not selling them, your not making profit off of them, as long as you dont claim you made them then i dont see the problem
rkelly
there are some sites where you can upload mods with rips but those sites dont have rules against it. face punch studios is one such site and a file hosting site like esnips.com is also great but if you upload a mod to esnips please put at the begining of the title fallout 3 mod then the mod name.
