KingGsterUK
Hi everyone. I've been trying over a week now to make new content for Oblivion. So I thought of making Achilles sword myself. The problem I'm having is after spending ages making my mesh and textures, I then create a new sword in the CS, fill all the fields in, attach the .nif and the icon .dds image I made. I then try and place the new sword I made into a cell, upon doing so the CS crashes. The first time I made the sword I managed to place it in the CS and save the .esp. When I went into the game and traveled to the cell I placed it in, the game crashed. It's very frustrating, and although I know I shouldn't, I feel like giving up on it. I'm sure some other modders out there must have encountered a similar problem in their early days. I'm using 3DS MAX 9.0 & PHOTOSHOP 7. I can upload the mesh and texture in an attachment if anyone feels like they want to try... Please help if you can and thank you for reading and showing an interest. xxXEvandarXxx
Upload the Nif file and the textures to something like Mediafire and I'll take a look.
lemonspaz
I have a long history with 3ds max, and use 3ds max 9 currently, but I really recommend you use blender for these sorts of things. It only takes around a day to get the hang of, and the amount of tutorials and tools (Bone weight copy! <3) available for blender is remarkable. I tried to skin armor to a skeleton in 3dsmax with much, much difficulty. I gave up on that and tried blender. Poof. Everything started to click. Sorry if I'm not of any immediate help. If you wish, you could send me the files to your weapon and I can see what I can do.
Vagrant0
Off hand, I would be tempted to think that it is some problem with what you did when exporting. As far as I know, none of the current exporters properly setup all the things to make a weapon mesh work correctly just from exporting. Weapons are not just the mesh, they also have a rather particular collision, and have several other node properties to make them get used by the game. Exporting a weapon mesh directly from a 3d program and linking it for use in the game would probably cause the game to crash since these components are missing. If you havn't done so already, I suggest downloading nifscope, and seeing if you can solve your problem by just taking an extracted longsword .nif, replace the mesh with the mesh from your .nif, link things together, then save over your .nif.http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index..._Custom_WeaponsThat tutorial explains the process a bit more, just skip to step 5. It's fairly easy to do once you have the process down. As to answer the previous poster, Blender isn't necessarily any better at some things. Actually, once you know what you're doing, skinning with 3dsmax is much easier, and allows for better functionality overall. The biggest problem with 3dsmax is more to do with how there aren't many tutorials for anything, and most of those tutorials that are available deal more with animating than anything applicable to Oblivion modding. But if you're the kind of person who can just figure things out from looking at the interface, this is can be easily solved.
KingGsterUK
Thank you all for replying to this post, your comments are very much appreciated. I have uploaded a .rar file to mediafire, included in this is AchillesSword.nif, AchillesSword.dds, AchillesSword_n.dds, AchillesSwordIcon.dds, Nif Export Properties.jpg (a screenshot of the .nif export properties I used in max) and a readme.txt file to explain the method I used for each program. The readme is quite thorough and long, but it does tell you everything I've done so hopefully you know where I've gone wrong. Just a quick note to Vagrant0, I followed that tutorial you mentioned and a few others on youtube to get a better idea of it all. Once I exported from MAX, I loaded 2 NifSkope windows, one with my custom weapon and the other with the standard elven longsword and coppied and pasted my NiTriStrips to the standard sword etc. But still no joy. I appreciate your posts and hope you can help me with this one, thank you so much._________________________Download the .rar file here_________________________
xxXEvandarXxx
I downloaded it, replaced the iron dagger with your sword, and equipped it in game, Oblivion crashed.I imported it in Blender, exported it, started Oblivion and equipped it, and Oblivion didn't crash. I'm not sure what the problem could be, but I guess that you could have used the wrong settings when you exported it.I also took a look at both of the .nif files in NifSkope, and they where pretty different:http://images.evandarsmods.webbland.se/blocklists2.jpg
KingGsterUK
Awesome!!!! I've just downloaded blender and the other necessary files to make it work and also looked at http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index...ustom_Collision ---- For the collision and export info.... .... And poof! lol got it working! xxXEvandarXxx..... Thanks for looking into it for me, Kudos for you matey :D lol I'll try manually reinstalling the 3ds max NifSkope plugin and use the default settings, see if that makes any difference with my max export issue. Thanks for your time everyone! Now to move forwards and make more detailed meshes and learn how to skin detailed textures :D :thanks:
