putting horns on an orc

hullo everyone. every time i attempt to change .nif and .dds files to modify a race (i have been trying to create demons with dremora horns, orc teeth and argonian tails), the construction set crashes. i have tried saving without viewing model files within the CS, and that seemed to work, but when i started up oblivion, the game crashed when i tried selecting that race. i've tried everything i know of to do this, but to no avail. any help you could provide would be very... well, helpful.

also, i have read and been in multiple forums in the past, and am well experienced with nonconstructive, negative and deconstructive criticism. i dont care really how simple or stupid what i'm asking is, i dont know how to do it, so dont insult my intelligence in your response - it will only serve to make me annoyed, at which point i will put all my energy towards reporting you and/or writing a well organized and grammatically correct list of grievances to the forum moderators. no threat intended, i just dont want to be insulted because someone decides it would be fun to belittle someone else.

thanks,

You might be having problems with the head morph files. Try using the conformulator. Using the wrong morph file for a head typically cause a crash.

I do horns by using slof's horns, create them as an item using the ring slot, and add them to the NPC of choice. Obviously this is more of an issue if you are trying to make a playable race with horns, although you could still do it, just might ruin your immersion to equip the horns as an item. Beth do dremora horns as part of the hair mesh.

Dremora horns are part of the hairs available for that race. Trying to remove them from the hairs and assign them as a separate model might cause things to crash if they are not configured right.

As far as making your race work, best advice I could give you would be to not copy or edit an existing race, but define one from scratch linking to the extracted resources within a folder specifically for that race. If you work from a race copy, the CS can often become unstable just because that is the nature of the CS. When extracting and moving files to the folder for your race, make sure you include any .egt, .egm or .tri files for that part.

Additionally, you should try to use the same teeth, tongue, ect as what the head is designed for. Using different models can cause some horrible clipping or other issues. Unfortunately, conformulator only works for things like hair, and not anything which is part of the actual face.

If you want horns that aren't part of the hair then use this resource. This race has a wide selection of horns already separated from the hairs. And as ric36 said, there's also AlienSlof's horns.
