Belgaer
Right, so I realize the two games are different beasts, but I'm just confused as to why I'm getting about 12 FPS (Medium settings) in Skyrim in most caves and a lot of areas outside if I can run Oblivion on Ultra, 32x AA, lush greenery mods, HD packs, etc. with a consistent 40ish fps. The question has to have some validity to it, right? I mean the game itself suggests I run on High, but it clearly can't manage it. My SpecsCPU: Intel i7-3630QM @ 2.40 GHz (Quad Core)RAM: 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM, SO DIMM 204-pinGPU: NVIDIA GeForce 610M - 2 GB DDR3 SDRAMHDD: 750 GB / 5400 RPMOS: Windows 8 64-bit EditionAny insight would be much appreciated. I've looked into mods to improve performance and nothing really seems to be working at all. Edited June 7, 2013 by Belgaer
prod80
Oblivion release date: March 2006Skyrim release date: November 2011 5 years and 8 months of hardware evolution in between. I can also play Doom 3 on 500 FPS now. I was happy to pull just above acceptable levels on release date. As for your specific system, you laptop's gfx card 610M is what's holding it back. It's equivelant in performance to Intel HD 3000/4000. Perhaps if you disable FXAA, AA, Set AF lower it helps. Or change resolution/textures down
FiftyTifty
A GeForc 610? With 32xAA? Bollocks. And it sounds about right; being able to max Oblivion but only play Skyrim on Low; the games are designed around the Ati X1900XT GPU (Xbox 360's GPU). If you compare Skyrim on the console to Skyrim on the PC, the console looks like utter pish; even when comparing it to Low settings on the PC. Oblivion, however, looks not too far from high settings on the PC. So yeah. Nothing abnormal.
Belgaer
Prod80: I realize there's a 5 year difference. But it's still within the same console generation and plays well enough on the 360. And, today, the 360's hardware is a bit dated. Right? I figured something was wrong on my end for there to be such a huge difference. I'm already running on Medium textures with AA and such off. FiftyTifty: Ugh. That's so frustrating. I thought Bethesda optimized for PC and ported to consoles? Did they change that with Skyrim? I mean from a business standpoint, I suppose it makes sense. But they did well enough with Oblivion and managed to make it run pretty well on both machines. That was ported to consoles, wasn't it? Thanks for the input, guys. Is there any thing I can do to help keep my fps at least more stable? Edited June 8, 2013 by Belgaer
salawow
Correct me if i'm wrong (and feel free to slap me with a trout), but it seems that: Morrowind: Pc gameOblivion: Pc game, ported to consoleSkyrim: Console game, ported to PC And for better fps, beside getting a better GPU there aren't real options unfortunatly :(

Wasn't sure about Skyrim.). Though Morrowind was ported to Xbox. Edited June 8, 2013 by Belgaer
FiftyTifty
Morrowind is the last PC game Bethesda made. Oblivion and Skyrim are ports to the PC. Easiest way to tell? Interface.
Belgaer
See, I was under the impression Oblivion was made for PC with an interface for consoles to them be ported to 360. And the reason they made it with an interface for consoles was just cutting corners because they already knew they were releasing for both systems (not to mention PS3). But this is really all beside the point. What I'm confused about still is that I've read several cases of people playing the game on lesser laptops just fine with better results than my own. Not to mention people expecting those results and similar cases to mine. There's gotta be something I can do, right? Is there a way to temporarily run Skyrim without mods (without ticking them all off manually) to see if it's my mods slowing me down? Similar to a Safe Mode. There used to be a program called SkyBoost that apparently solved similar issues, or so I've read. But I don't know much about it other than it doesn't work anymore and seems to be discontinued. Edited June 10, 2013 by Belgaer
FiftyTifty
You're running a GT 610. That's THE worst graphics card still in production. It's comparable to intel's HD 2500 IGPU. I'm amazed you even managed to game on Oblivion.
