Help with reference alias's on items

I'm trying to make my glowing items mod use scripting to make the items glow instead of changing the mesh in nifskope. I've been read scripting tutorials and I've read through the unread books glow scripts since that is the only mod I've seen that does what I want. so far I've been able to learn I need to create a quest and add alias's to it that have an object type condition. I've played with unread books glow and made armor and misc items glow.

My question is. how do I apply an effect shader to an item once it's been seen by the alias?

Can someone tell me how to do it or point me to a guide about manipulating items like that.
