Backporting problems (personal use)

Hi. I am Lorenzo and I have some knowledge of Fallout modding and Geck (but i'm not an expert). I'm trying to backport a Fallout New Vegas item to Fallout 3 ONLY for my personal use, so I won't upload it. I imported in GECK both the mesh and textures (the item is a piece of clothing). I created the item and when i click "Preview" it displays it correctly with all the textures. When I start Fallout 3 and wear the item the right textures don't show up and instead of them it displays some ambient textures (like the megaton floor texture or footprints textures). When I turn the player the texture randomly change. So the question is: where I am wrong? Sorry for my bad english and please be gentle with me because it is my first post

Thanks a lot it worked! I had archive invalidation in FOMM but I read the description of your link and I learnt what archive invalidation really does (it tells the game to use also the texture of texture folder, right?). Another question: in other mods I created I used an edited model with nifskope (a custom laser for my gun) and I put it in meshes folder and the mesh worked ingame but why the game by default only accept meshes and not textures that not present in .bsa files?

As far as I know, the answer to your question is: because someone at Bethesda made it that way. I can make a guess: that when developing new textures, the "finished" ones were put into a BSA while the Works-In-Progress were in the \texture folder. Using archive invalidation prevented WIP textures from being used during testing over "finished" textures. Perhaps when the game and GECK were released, the meshes portion of this process was removed but not the texture portion. Again, this is only a guess. Perhaps someone else knows more.
