What the hell happened to Vault 87?

The White House was hit hard enough to utterly destroy it, the Potomac would've soaked up radioactivity like a sponge, and Megaton's atomic bomb can go off in-game, but you can strip down to your boxers and frolic to the clicks of your Geiger counter in those places.

Why is Vault 87 so insanely irradiated after 200 years?

i think its because of the human testing going on with the G.E.C.K. god knows how long that went on for.....

what makes me laugh alot is the Super Mutant called Fawkes is a.............girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hes not... pete made a mistake in one interview but clarified it yet

but fawkes is kinda resembling V from vendetta alot and one could argue that supermutants are nongendered as they cant reproduce but they seemingly have quite the high testosteron levels nevertheless

at the OPs question:

theyre still testing stuff there, its an isolated bunker full of radioactive stuff

compare it to one of these trashpiles we store our depleted uranium in if its not put onto bullets

Who knows. Perhaps it also served in the Fallout 3 parallel world as a nuclear weapons repository, like this one near Alberquerque, New Mexico:

Kirtland Underground Munitions Storage Complex, where 2,450 nuclear weapons are stored. Underground storage of 490,000 sq ft (= 45522 m2 = 11.24 acres). One hell of a vault.

Were you curious about the real Raven Rock? The Raven Rock Alternate Joint Communications Center (AJCC)

Alternate National Military Command Center is located in Raven Rock mountain near Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.

with individual capsules being suspended in a shock isolation system

I even found a map of its floorplan:

Other interesting underground facilities in the Fallout 3 area:

Alternate National Warning Facility in Olney, MD.

Mount Weather High Point Special Facility in Berryville, VA.

Mount Pony (formerly the central node for all American electronic funds transfer activities, now a Library of Congress archive) in Culpeper, VA

FEMA VIP Evacuation and Support Facility for Continuity of Government in Boonsboro, MD.

FEMA VIP Evacuation and Support Facility for Continuity of Government in Mercersburg, PA.

1.) It's a quest limitation. This is the real reason.

2.) The Vault 87 Overseer mentions (obviously not in-person) that 87 took a direct nuclear hit. This is the "in-game" reason. We don't know the yield of the weapon compared to the nuclear fart that is Megaton, so this isn't an entirely unfair explanation.

3.) We don't know the nuke type. As I recall, neutron bombs would be specialized to deliver immense, long-lasting amounts of radiation with relatively little physical damage. It could be that one or more of those hit 87.

I've tried...although you can make it to the outside door, if I remember for me it said, "Wooden door to Vault 87 entrance" but if you're in Vault 87 like the way you're supposed to you can see the Vault door and open it although that door isn't exactly meant to open because when you do there's basically nothing and you can fall out of the map and you'll instanly respawn several feet from the door itself...nothing big...

I turned on god mode and made it to the entrance. I forgot what it said under the door, but it was not locked nor did it need a key. It just will not work.

There was a .32 pistol and some rad away at the door though. Made me laugh because I was taking 1350 rad/sec and no one could get there without cheating.
