I was having terrible problems after an install of Martigan's Mutant Mod, crashing every 20-30 minutes. The very latest version of ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated(1 February 2009) seems to have fixed most in-game issues, at least to the extent that I can test my pending mods without pain.

I'm still having terrible problems with GECK and FO3edit though, in part because FO3edit pukes when it has to parse unexpected game data in some very popular mods. I've taken to just recompiling (renaming objects) in one mod so that it will save in a format F03edit can digest.

i had two gigs of ram when i first got this game. the game ran more or less smoothly. then i upgraded to 3 gb Ram and suddenly i'm getting lag. moments where the game pauses (not even video lag because the ai and gameplay, everythign pauses while in the lock up). recently it started to doing it really bad when I was in any of the in game menus (pipboy, object inventory, computer terminals, picklocks).

I heard that there was something we could type in our fallout.ini or something that would delete cache or something and that that might help with this more or less game killing bug.

@buddha

you must also mind the fact that vista itself eats half the ram you have and thus dimishes the pros

i have for example an up to date 3gig vista mashine on which the game lags like doh (background processes off) but my tiny 1gig xp mashine runs as smooth as an antilope on a plain of butter

u need someone to look at your pc then my vista after boot up uses under half a gig allso i`m running everything on the highest setting  whats your windows experience index base score?

I have like 8 gigs of ram on a vista 64bit system and I crash randomly 5min 10 hours doesnt really matter it will crash its just when is what I wait for. my friend uses a pirated version and it works without a hitch lol....... so much for proprietary support huh....

oh and I have it on ultra high and getting like 52 fps

Well I might as well end this early. The results were unexpected but fairly conclusive.

The amount of RAM is not the main reason for people getting a stable game from Fallout 3.

The OS does come into play, and anyone with any version of Vista with 2GB or less is

playing with a severe handicap (since Vista uses at least 1.1GB unless you modify the

background services).

My new hypothesis is that those of you with stable games have edited your fallout.ini/

falloutpref.ini files and come up with a good balance for your system. If anyone would

be willing to send me a copy of both of these I will conduct a comparison of all that I get

to see if I can distill a common set of factors to share with everyone. PM me and I will

give you my email address. When you send these please remind me of how much RAM

you have so that I can sort them properly.

Thanks Everyone! Hopefully this may lead to a working game for many people.

Cheers!

Edit - So far no one has sent me their Fallout.ini files. If I do not get any from you (the

people with stable games), then I cannot perform a comparison and determine the

possible factors that make your game stable. I will be testing this on my system, so

I will not be bugging you about it, and the fallout.ini has no personal information. Any

help would be appreciated!
