Crash to Desktop (Multiple Occasions, Somewhat Random)

Recommended Posts

Alrighty. So. On my latest game, I'd played up to level 14 without any issues. There were one or two crashes when exiting the tavern in Ivarstead, but aside from that it was very smooth. It got to the point, though, where I would crash every time I loaded a save; I would see my character for a split second and the game would shut down. There would be no "Skyrim has stopped working" - it was as if the process had been terminated from the task manager or something. T'was not fun.

I tried disabling all mods and enabling them one by one, but I started getting odd results. Enabling glowing books might make it crash on load, disabling it might not, enabling something unrelated and then enabling glowing books might not make it crash, but enabling Alternate Start would do it regardless.

It eventually got to the point where I reinstalled Skyrim, backing up my saves of course. I reinstalled each mod and sorted them using B.O.S.S. I loaded my latest autosave and voila - everything was fine. I played for about an hour or so, aaand then it crashed again.

Times when it's crashed.

1.) Exiting the Ivarstead tavern.

2.) Exiting the Nordic tomb just outside of Ivarstead.

3.) In the middle of fighting a mountain lion on High Hrothgar.

4.) When loading a quicksave/autosave (ones that loaded before without issue, mind you).

5.) When trading with Lydia (most recently, mid trade; did not crash when I asked).

6.) Likely one or two while just walking around.

After the crash while fighting a mountain lion is when the loading of saves causing CTDs started.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a mod conflict; I think I have all the necessary patches, but I'm not so sure. It might be some character enhancement mods clashing. I haven't used Wrye Bash or anything or "cleaned" my plugins.

I put both .ini files and the load order below. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks.

going through your mod list i cant see any incompatibilities, however if you haven't used TESVedit or wyre bash before i can only assume you have dirty edits and conflicting leveled lists. the dirty edits don't really seem to cause CTDs but im pretty sure that a conflicting leveled list will. when you run BOSS does it say anywhere in your recognized plugins that a mod contains "dirty edits" or "bash tag suggestion"? if it does then that's a good place to start looking for problems. Gopher did 2 tutorial videos on youtube on TESVedit that was very informative and easy to follow

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re8YBJm9l64

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOQO2S6HDBw

as for wyre bash, i couldn't really find a decent video tutorial on how to use it, it took me a while to understand the basics and i still don't know much but there are a couple videos on youtube that could be helpful to you. just to a search on Skyrim Wyre Bash Tutorial, or creating a Bashed Patch, it should turn up something helpful. also there is this pictorial guide that i followed that did help a bit.

http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/35230/

don't let the fact that its on the oblivion nexus fool you, im pretty sure it works the exact same for skyrim. beyond that im not too sure what the problem could be but it sounds like conflicting leveled lists. all the best.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I posted what I found below just in case. I'll look in to fixing them.

It told me two plugins aren't necessary and should be deleted (one is listed below simply because it has a patch add-on that I'm not sure what to do with).

Plenty of dirty edits, a few bash tag suggestions.

dD - Enhanced Blood Main.esp

Try get rid of that, it's causing issues for many people.

Or if you use many 2K/4K textures swap to 1K/2K. Skyrims TESV.exe is 32-Bit and gets unstable when closing in on 3.1 GB of memory usage.

I don't use many texture mods nor do I use a HQ texture pack. It's still crashing, but less regularly. Removing the blood texture mod didn't seem to help. I also removed Warzones just in case that could've been it.

It happens when I'm exploring, when I'm fighting, when I'm looting. Since I've been in The Rift a lot, maybe it has to do with that area.

EDIT: Most recently, I've crashed twice while trying to loot a Black Mage Robes from a witch in Snapleg Cavern. Both times right when I clicked on it.

EDIT2: Three times now, this time while trying to loot Black Mage Robes that were previously lootable on a second witch that was already dead.

It seems that the longer I play on a save without deleting and reinstalling all my mods, the more the crashes occur.

oh wow. ok this could take a minute here but yeah there are a number of problems that you sir are facing. just about everything in your mod list contains dirty edits which in a situation like this could cause a lot of problems. additionally Update.esm Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esm Immersive Armors.esm and Immersive Weapons.esm all require a bash tag from Wrye Bash, which basically means you do have conflicting leveled lists. further more I noticed that you have the Weapons and Armor Fixes mod, which was already fixed by the Unofficial Skyrim Patch mod so you no longer need that one. lastly you have a few mods there that start with Headbomb Better Sorting, now I don't know what that mod is but it is saying that it "Contains out of order or unexpected records," now I think that means that this is a mod that came out before the creation kit, so a lot of the stuff that went into the making of those mods are a bit out of date (at least that is what I have been told that means). thankfully there has been a Compatibility Patch that operates just like a mod,

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26230/

all you have to do here is go to the files page and download the patch called Better_Sorting_v-2-06_Compatibility_Patch it should be the third file down that list, just download through NMM and activate. that's the easy part out of the way.

now about TESVedit and Wrye Bash, these tools im afraid are a must have when modding out skyrim. I strongly advice you to look into these programs and figure out how they work, the video I sent you in my previous post about TESVedit is pretty easy to follow and straight forward but wrye bash could be a problem.

I will look into it further and see if I cant find a decent tutorial and get back to you on that. for now concentrate on downloading that patch for the better sorting mod and TESVedit, and I will see about finding an easy to follow video tutorial. also too I think its worth mentioning that there shouldn't be a need for deactivating the enhanced blood textures mod, I cant speak for warzones as I don't use it, but the blood mod is one that I do use and after fiddling with TESVedit and wrye bash I got it to work without problems so far (heh famous last words), going through your mod lists load order again I see no incompatibilities but we wont know that for certain until those programs have done there thing to sort out your situation, removing those dirty edits and creating a bashed patch, and all that other good stuff. so again for now just concentrate on cleaning your mods and we'll get to the next step.

Thunderwolf, can you describe how one would go about correcting/editing the Bash Tag suggestion given by BOSS for Update.exm, Dawnguard.esm etc.??

I too have those Bash Tag suggestions and downloaded Wyre Bash but have never used it before. I'm comfortable using TES5Edit to clean the files but have no idea how to fix these Bash Tag suggestions and NavMesh Deletion issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

(CRAP, had this whole blessed thing typed out then accidently hit back, thanks a lot stupid mouse)

ok I will try my best here to explain this as best as I can but the honest truth here is that I am new to Wrye Bash myself. I am working to understand it better but the basics are pretty simple, here goes

you see where in the boss log is says Bash Tag Suggestion and then beside that it says in those weird squiggly lines {{BASH: Delev, Relev}} now I don't know what a Delev is, nor a Relev, what I do know is that these are the missing components to make your leveled lists play nice together. this is what the bash tag is suggesting we add.

from here launch Wrye Bash and at the top left there should be a tab called Mods. it should already be on that tab upon launch but just in case that's the one we want to use. when you click on the Mods tab you will get your load order. the first 2 things that require a Bash Tag on Archonis1's mod list are Update.esm and Dawnguard.esm so im going to tackle these guys first. what you want to do is highlight the Update.esm, just one click, and then at the bottom right of the screen you should see a small white box that has Bash Tags: written above that. all you need to do is take a look at your boss log, see where it says Update.esm and the bash tags it wants are both Delev and Relev. inside that little box under bash tags, right click and select both Delev and Relev. thats the basics of it.

now all you need to do from there is go down your load order and check to see which mods require those tags, sometimes itll be both Delev and Relev, sometimes it might be just one or the other. thus far I haven't run into a situation where the other options in that right click menu are needed so don't even worry about them. then go back to wrye bash and add those tags to the mod. its the same method for ESP files as well, just scroll through, and add those Delev's and Relev's to each mod that BOSS says needs them.

now this part im a little uncertain of but I believe that, once you've finished adding all those needed tags, down at the very bottom of your load order there should be a new mod listed there called Bashed Patch, 0.esp. im really hoping that its there as I cant confirm this but I believe that it should be. if it is there right click that "mod" and select Rebuild Patch. that should bring up a small menu that has a series of drop down menus inside a small box on the right, saying stuff like Alias Mod Names, Merge Patches, Tweak Settings, and Leveled Lists. if you can see that your on the right track. from there all you need to do is hit the box on the bottom that says Build Patch. and what that does is it creates a new mod type thinger in your load order that adds all those Delevs and Relevs to the mods that need them and creates a new Esp file. it will show you a little timer as this can take a second or 2 and once its done itll show you a list a new window,( I think it will anyway), all that really is is a list of all the mods that now have those tags added. kinda like BOSS, its just showing you whats been added.

from there all you would need to do (I really friggen hope so) is just double check you load order, in NMM, and be sure that at the very bottom is the Bashed Patch, make absolutely sure its at the very bottom of your load order. and just make sure that the box is checked and it will load it in to skyrim.

now its worth mentioning that for some reason or another, if you were to launch BOSS again and see your load order, it will still say Bash Tag Suggestion underneath the mods that need them. do not worry, BOSS just for some reason cant detect that you added those tags already. just scroll down to the bottom and make sure that the Bashed Patch is there and is Active.

its also worth mentioning that any time you change your load order you must recreate your Bashed Patch because for some reason it doesn't like you fiddling with the load order. once you have the process down however, thatll just be another 5min out of your day (assuming I did this right).

and you are done, at least I really bloody hope so, I really hope im not damaging anything here but this is the way I was taught how to use wrye bash so if im wrong, you can totally blame the guy I listened to and not me. what I can tell you however is that I am currently facing no problems with my mods and everything is performing a lot better so I truly hope this ends up working for you guys.

best of luck.
