Leafynn
Did you get the 3DS Max .nif file plugin? If not then you won't be able to export the files files as .nif files.
Lord Garon
well i really whant to start making my own mods, but im havin issues with 3ds max i cant save nif files without crashing, and blender is just a pain in the butt, is there another program that can be used to create/edit nif files?? I've never used anything but Blender, so I don't know what a pain in the arse it is. But Blender 2.49b and the NIFTools suite works, at least. Google for the differences between Oblivion (most of the scripts were made for an earlier NIF version) and Skyrim and you should be GTG. NIFSkope itself can do a lot of editing, especially around textures and effects. The "problems" with NIF files revolve around specifications; as far as I know, official file specs were never released, nor precisely how the game engine(s) interpret them (the game engine NIF API). Most of the work on NIF editors has been done by trial and error and the BIG boys are loathe to implement support for the file format "in the dark".
