Rollinsb
I love Oblivion and Fallout 3. However, Oblivion dips in frame rate exponentially when any enemy AI are introduced into the game world. I have the settings set to High, and have no other problems with playing the game; even when multiple, non-aggresive NPC's are on screen, the game runs fine. My current specs are a 1.9 Ghz AMD Processor, 3 Gigs of RAM, and a Geforce 7600 GS graphic card. I'm planning on increasing the RAM to 8 Gigs, and I was wondering if this will help with my problem. If not, I would greatly appreciate it if someone will tell me what will.

It might actually make things worse depending on what kind of motherboard or OS you are using. 3gb of RAM should be more than enough for both Oblivion and Fallout, even if using vista. The problem is likely either processor or videocard related. The processor is a little on the slow side, especially if using Vista, but would not necessarily cause slow frame rates. If it was a processor issue, you would probably notice some fairly long load times, or unresponsive game behavior while frames are still playing. Framerate is usually an issue of the videocard. The videocard loads, processes, and renders the visual information (graphics and meshes) for the game. As NPCs tend to be the most complicated objects in any scene, graphically, having multiple likely pushes things beyond your videocard's ability to manage, causing the slower framerate. Incidentally, there is a system advisor section which is a bit more appropriate for topics like this.
Thor.
It can be an issue with your video card, i have an amd 5600 fx with 2 9800gtx's with 1gb ram and no lagg or clipping, runs crysis at 31 frames per second. But on the other side my old 2 8800gts's had major issue with lagg and clipping even though that they where in sli, it was due to the fact that there was only 320mb of ram and all those texture caused major lagg do to the lack of ram, and clocks speeds on the video card can be an issue to. It can also be your processor, the fact that its at 1.9 ghz can be an issue to, some games like fallout 3 have requirements and if you dont meet those requirements there can be compatibility issue in some games like fall out 3. Crysis requirements are atleast 2.8gh, and dont know what fall out 3 requirement really are, haven't tested that. In the long run i suggest you upgrade your processor two atleast a 3.2 ghz if you really want to play Oblivion and Fall Out3. I know how anoying finding out that you can't play the game due to tha fact you don't meat the requiremnt thats what got me into upgrading to an sli machine in the first place, it is worth it. yes next time take it to the systems advisors thread. All though sometimes trying to get a hold of some one may take awhile. Personal experience lol.
TheTerminator2004
The biggest problem will be your processor, you really do need to upgrade that. After that, the graphics card is a must - thats pretty outdated (256mb RAM, right?), and both Oblivion and Fallout are heavily dependent on the graphics card, especially the amount of RAM. I have a 3ghz processor, 1gb RAM, and a 512mb 8500GT graphics card, and can run both games on full settings with no problems at all.
Rollinsb
Thanks for the advice, I do have one more question though. If I get a 3 Ghz processor, will I have to upgrade my CPU cooling equipment at all?
TheTerminator2004
Most new CPUs come with their own fan and heatsink anyway, I believe. So if it does, use that, if not, youll have to get new cooling equipment yourself.
