slazzer
Totally new to modding here and figured I would look at some tutorial videos to see how things worked. Mistake! Most of these "tutorial" videos assume some level of programming knowledge it seems. I was originally hoping simply to use Steam Workshop but the "cool" mods even on there seem to require other mods to make those mods work and apparently then need to be in a certain order. Anyway, I figured a mod called SKYUI would be great since it created a better user interface while playing the game. Apparently you need a degree in programming to download the thing. Ive tried watching one or two of these videos and after they say "click this and click here and then do this. etc..." I am totally lost. I guess I am asking if there is a basic video for people who can teach people how to download something like this and tell them what they are doing. I am always so nervous about moving files I have no idea what they do and these exotic sounding names make no sense to me. I understand most of you are much more intelligent than me when it comes to programming and computer in general, but is there a video somewhere to explain to someone like me how to really use one of these mods? And not just say click here and presto, which never works when I try it anyway. Otherwise maybe I ll just stick with the unofficial bug patches. thenobody0
It might seem daunting at first but it's really not that complicated. If you know how to operate a computer and a web browser you'll be able to to install SkyUI. Installing mods does not require knowledge of programming. In most cases you also don't need to move any files around manually. Especially not if you use a mod manager, like the Nexus Mod Manager. The way you download mods from the Steam Workshop might seem easier, but it's much more limiting and it's auto update feature might break your save. Don't beat yourself up for not understanding how it works right away. I've been using computers all my life and when I first started modding I was really unsure too and afraid of messing up my game. But you can't really do any major damage. You can always re-download the game files from Steam. Gopher on youtube has a channel where he showcases mods and also shows how to install most of them. It's very beginner friendly. You can search his channel for SkyUI or SKSE (which is what you need to install before installing SkyUI). Hope that helps. Nudedragon
Don't blame other people for your ignorance. Mods are permitted, not supported, and require some innovative solutions to get working. You can either learn how to follow step-by-step instructions, or you can play vanilla skyrim, it's up to you.

The regular STEP is more for beginners.
slazzer
Okay, thanks for the advice. I realize this is beyond my knowledge however. I just cant get that script extender to work. I'm just sticking to vanilla Skyrim at this point.

slazzer
Except that is the problem. It doesnt work. And when I tried downloading something called zip7 or something like that it installed on my system and now I cant get rid of it. I am worried it is some type of malware now. According to the video it was supposed to open the file but it wasn't able to open it and now it is stuck on my system because whenever I try to delete it, I am told it is still open and I need to close it. I'm worried I am going to have to do a complete system reinstall. Is this some type of malware?

It's a popular free program to open archives such as .rar or .zip or .7z files. You install 7zip and then click on the archive file to open it. In this case the file you got from the SKSE website: skse_1_06_16.7z. If you installed 7zip properly it should automatically assign archives to be opened with 7zip. But the SKSE webpage also has an installer option (.exe file), which should be more easy to use. Did you even look at Gopher's video on SKSE that I told you about? I'm sorry, but if you're having problems with these really basic things I think modding is not for you. Edited July 20, 2013 by thenobody0
